The strong aspect of Jupiter on any planetary affliction, how large it could be, has the capacity to tune down the adverse affect to large extent. This is one of the reasons as to why Jupiter enjoys the dignity of the highest title of Dev Guru.
Intelligence is governed by devaguru Jupiter, who is the karaka for Dhi or the supreme intelligence. There are many kind of intelligence, which is important for sustenance in this material world and with the same reasoning; animals are also intelligent, as they also know, how to keep themselves alive. However, the only difference, between an animal and human being is the presence of “Dhi”, or the intelligence for self-development and realization. Who else can govern, such intelligence than the devaguru himself!
The strength of Jupiter lies with guiding the Mana (Moon) in the right direction. This is why in the Kalachakra, or the time cycle, Jupiter is placed opposite to the Moon. No, wonder, on Amavasyas and Purnimas, when the mind gets hyper exited; only Jupiter has the power to put rein on such Mind. Thus on full Moon nights, when the Moon (Mind) is highly activated, Satya-Narayan (Jupiter) vrata is done.
The omnipresence and omnipotent characteristics of knowledge (True knowledge- the Vedas) can only be described by the ethereal Jupiter. Jupiter has the extra ordinary power to tap all form of knowledge, comprehensible or incomprehensible.
Among he supporters of Jupiter, Moon is the most important as he is who exalts the Jupiter. Thus, Moon aids in the manifestation of Jupiter or Dhi, and represent the Mana or consciousness. A strong Mana can only be productive, when it is under the proper guidance of supreme intellect signified by Devaguru Brhaspati.

Jupiter Positive
Jupiter yields good results if it is exalted, or is in its own or mooltrikona sign. It is also conidered good in Leo and Aquarius. It is beneficial if it is in an angle, triangle or in the XI house. It will give good results if it is in its own or exalted navamsha. The individual will come by wealth, vehicles, learning and success. He will enjoy good health. He will turn religious. There may be birth of a child in the family. He will enjoy power and high status. It may see marriage of a female individual or a happy married life. He will have an excellent house. His ambitions will be fulfilled. He will live in comfort and shall be happy. His elder siblings or in a female chart the husband of the individual may experience a happy period in their lives.
Negative
Jupiter, when debilitated, combust or associated with a malefic planet and placed in the VI or VIII house, shall be troublesome. Such a Jupiter causes loss of position, removal from residence, distress to children, mental disquiet, and loss of wealth. He may go on pilgrimages. The individual may have malfunctioning of liver or raised blood pressure. A female individual may experience marital stress or her husband may have trouble. The eldest child or the son of the individual may not fare well in life. Gold, horses and elephants come in unsolicited. Brahmins and Gods bestow blessings.
Jupiter : The wise Jupiter by its spiritual nature is said to represent ether. The two signs ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarius and Pisces are both dual in nature. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer which is cardinal sign with water element. The degree of exaltation is 5 degrees.
Jupiter is considered as the most beneficial planet for mankind and will function best in Cancer because of the water element. Jupiter is the planet of wisdom or knowledge unlike Mercury which is the planet of information and exchange. Exalted Jupiter gives a person humility because of true wisdom. Exalted Jupiter makes him true guru who dispenses knowledge and wisdom for benefit of all. It is the planet of luck, divine grace which can fulfill all our needs without our seeking. When Jupiter is with us the universe is with us. In its exaltation in Cancer he is the Cosmic and Divine beneficence. Jupiter gets debilitated in Capricorn which is cardinal sign with earth element The earth element of Capricorn with it’s cardinal nature can make us too materialistic, too pragmatic. We can become too manipulative to achieve our goal. It will give us pride and arrogance and can make us too self centered. We can become over optimistic and over extend ourselves in every sphere of our life.
The native having debilitated Jupiter is tactless, irritable, inconsistent, avaricious, unmanly, jealous and have a disgraceful behaviour.
During the sub-period of debilitated Jupiter one suffers from liver disorders and fevers. One cannot concentrate on studies. There are obstructions in one's spiritual pursuits. One becomes selfish. One suffers on account of problems to one's male progeny and husband. If such debilitated Jupiter is badly placed and is under the severe affliction of Rahu/Ketu or the lords of the eighth or twelfth houses, one becomes vulnerable to liver cirrhosis, jaundice and diabetes.
JUPITER IN THIRD
3rd is the house of Parakrama (bravery), Maithuna (copulation) and Death. Mars is the karaka of 3rd house, showing parakrama; because it is the sign of Maithuna, Rahu gets exalted in this house in the natural Zodiac and Jaimini says 3rd is the house of death (Dinau Dine Punya).
Jupiter, being the Devaguru, by nature is a peace-loving planet who signify harmony, universal brotherhood (Vasudaiva Kutumbakam) and wisdom. When such a planet goes to the house of parakrama, he is rendered ineffective under the violent temper of Mars. This is why Jupiter gets debilitated where Mars gets exalted. He can’t withstand the violence of Mars.
Jupiter being a karaka for dharma, becomes very uncomfortable when it goes to the house of copulation. Like Sun who is rendered ineffective in the house of pleasures of Bed, Jupiter is also rendered ineffective in the house of sex.
Jupiter is again the prana of the Life force and hence also called the Jiva, where as Mars is the Mrityu karaka. When Jupiter goes to the 3rd house, the house of death, the life force diminishes, more so under the effect of Karaka Mars.
When we look at the ayana of planets we see that the ayana of Rahu is opposite to that of Jupiter. Hence wherever Rahu is strong, Jupiter is rendered weak. In the Kalachakra we see that the Kala of the Dik goveren by Jupiter, is ruled by Jupiter and hence any Jupiterian activity is prohibited in the Rahu Kala.
A retrograde Jupiter never shows any major negativity on account of being retrograde if it is otherwise positive in a horoscope though it does show some results which are different. A
retrograde Jupiter usually produces positive or negative results with a delay compared to a forward moving Jupiter. It also renders the habit of preaching more than usual in some cases and it may also be responsible for a situation where the native sometimes does not know how to deal with his knowledge properly. Such natives may have a habit of giving unasked advice to other people and may not know how to properly apply their knowledge at times. Apart from these general deviations, a retrograde Jupiter works much the same as a forward moving Jupiter and gives positive or negative results regarding its other significances as indicated by the other factors in a horoscope.
Jupiter when retrograde in the eastern side of the zodiac gives notably good results.
Sarvartha Chintamani states that during the ruling period of a Retrograde Jupiter, the native gets much wealth, sons, and wife and also gets favour from the Government. However, this is subject to the condition that Jupiter should not be under heavy afflictions. He has also referred to Phal-deepika where it is stated that a retrograde planet possesses strength when he is retrograde. It is stated that when 5th lord and 5th house, 9th lord and 9th house are weak, Retrograde Jupiter, well placed, is capable of giving male issue (son.)
Jupiter is said to be combust when it comes within 11 degrees on either side of the Sun.
Combust Jupiter is quite beneficial. He makes the native ambitious, religious, philosophical; literary and other activities play a major role. It is a highly benevolent combustion.
Jupiter Combust
When Jupiter is combust the native feels that they are unable to meet a set of ideals which their ego considers necessary for spiritual blessings. The self is attached to the need for perfect and noble behavior in order to be worthy of God’s grace. They are unable to accept themselves with their own imperfections and feel that God will not either. There is little room for self-forgiveness and a resulting lack of faith in God’s interest in their personal welfare. They may easily believe that others can receive Gods blessings, but that they are unable to believe that they themselves can. This creates a feeling of purposelessness in their activities, including their spiritual activities, because they feel that no matter what the effort they are still imperfect and therefore worthless in God’s eyes. In essence when Jupiter is combust the native is angry at religion or God for making it impossible for them.
Generally the issues revolving around a combust Jupiter are developed as a result of experiencing some belief system that was presented in a dogmatic fashion. This belief system or the manners in which it was presented, would not have allowed for the normal feelings and desires which
all humans have. Being of perfect behavior, word and thought would have been stressed with no practical methods being taught to control the mind and transcend desires. The individual would then be left in despair, without hope for any possible salvation. Another consideration of Jupiter’s
combustion is that the native will feel insecure about their knowledge or wisdom. This will cause them frustration and anger when confronted by something they do not understand. Rather than admit that they do not understand they are more likely to act as if it is unimportant at the moment and try to sneak out of dealing with their lack of understanding.
If Jupiter is combust the negative results will be confined to the beginning of the period. Thereafter the period will be positive. The individual during such a period may also go on a pilgrimage. Of all the planets, Guru or Jupiter alone is capable of conferring all 3 yogas (i) Rajayoga (power and position), (ii) Dhanayoga (wealth) and (iii) Gnanayoga or wisdom and other worldly knowledge leading to emancipation.
Guru (Jupiter) represents knowledge. Jupiter signifies higher education, wisdom embodied in spiritual traditions, and religion. As gaining knowledge is essential for evolution and spiritual growth, Jupiter also indicates the general principle of growth in life. Physically, Jupiter relates to the growth of the body; mentally, to the increase of happiness and sense of fullness; and socially, to the growth of the family in the form of progeny. Guru signifies prosperity and fortune in life.

According to the Mahabharat (Adiparva), Jupiter is the son of great sage Angira and the priest of the deities. The demons wanted to starve the deities to death by obstructing the oblation (Yagya) performed by them. Jupiter by the help of his profound knowledge helped the deities to get their due shares of the oblation. Jupiter the preceptor of the deities protected them by using the
Rakshoghna mantra and driving away the demons.
In ‘ Skandapuran ' there is a description how he became the preceptor of the deities. Jupiter did a severe and tremendous penance in ‘Dwarka' (prabhas area) to please lord Shankar. Being pleased by his penance lord Shiva gave him a boon to become the preceptor of the deities.
Jupiter remains in each zodiac for a year if he has a retrograded motion then this duration changes. (Shrimadbhagawat 5/22/15 ).
According to the Rigveda Jupiter is very pleasing to watch. He himself has constructed his abode. He is worth worshipping for the whole world. If he becomes pleased with his devotees he blesses them with prosperity and intelligence. He helps his devotees to be on a virtuous paths and protect them in every calamity. Jupiter is very affectionate towards people who seek his refuge.
His vehicle is a chariot, which is made up of gold and appears very pleasant. Eight horses pull his chariot, which have yellow complexions and which are as fast as the wind. His weapon is a stick made of gold.
Jupiter has two wives - Shubha and Tara . Seven daughters were born to Shubha – Bhanumati, Raka, Archismati, Mahishrvati, Siniwali and Havishmati.
Seven sons and a daughter were born to Tara . Jupiter also had a third wife whose name was Mamta and who gave birth to ‘Bhardwaja' and ‘Kacha'. The presiding deity of Jupiter is ‘ Bhrama '.
Jupiter is the lord of the zodiac Sagittarius and Pisces. His ‘great phase lasts till sixteen years . The Jupiter is considered as a high planet, till the fifth degree, in the zodiac of Cancer. Making donations of yellow clothes, gold, turmeric, ghee, cereals of yellow colour, topaz, horse, book, honey, salt, sugar, land and umbrella to the brahmins pacifies the jupiter.
Mythology: In Indian myth Brihaspati is the deity for Jupiter who teaches the gods (devas) and protects humanity from evil. In Greek myth Jupiter or Zeus was the king of the gods. As the king he had the ultimate authority to give immortality or condemn one to a terrible fate. Both mythologies symbolize the ultimate judge or authority and father figure. In some it can be the over zealous know it all.
Myth: Jupiter is the son of Chitra Devi and Saint Angirasa - a favorite son of Lord Brahma.
Jupiter performed difficult penances for Lord Shiva for a period of 10,000 years. This pleased Lord Shiva so much that he declared him to be guru of the gods. Jupiter is therefore known as Lord of Worship and Guru.
Mythology: Brihaspati is the Guru of Devtas( Gods ). His father is Maharishi Angira. Maharishi's wife got the knowledge and procedures of performing the Vrata (ritual) from Sanat Kumars for having a son. She performed the Vrata with complete devotion and the Gods were satisfied and a son was born in their house. The son was the lord of wisdom Jupiter.
Old Greeks consider Jupiter as the father of Gods - ZEUS. Egyptians call it AMMON. The Norse calls it THOR. Babylonians call it as MERODACH.
Myth: In the Rig Veda Brahaspati is said to be born in the sky with seven faces and seven rays. Brahaspati defeats his enemies and breaks their forts. No ritual sacrifice can be complete without invoking this teacher of gods. He is the seer who perceived and wrote one of the hymns of the Rig Veda (10.72).
In the Skanda Purana it is said that Brahaspati worshiped Shiva for a thousand years and as a reward Shiva made him the planet Jupiter.
Gods: Zeus is the Greek equivalent to the thunder god Jupiter. The ancient northern god Thor and the Celtic Taranis have a lot in common. The Hindu god Vishnu can also be mentioned here. All of these gods powerfully defend us humans against evil.
In Vedic myths Jupiter, or Brihaspati, is the seventh son of the sage Angra. He is often depicted as middle age in yellow garments, rather large with the temperament of a priest. He has his hair in a top-knot and is often shown holding sacred beads for the reciting of sacred mantras. Brihaspati is often invoked to provide protection and to overcome obstacles and increase good fortune. As mentioned in the previous Vedic myths, Brihaspati lost his wife Tara to Chandra, the Moon. Even though Brihaspati said his beautiful wife had been abducted, she had actually had fallen love with the Moon. Clearly a case of the dish ran away with the Moon! Brihaspati then went to the Vedic god Indra to ask for help in reuniting with Tara. Indra sent a message to the Moon, but Chandra would not give up Tara. So Indra ordered the devas to fight with the Moon for the return of Tara. After years of fighting the supreme God Brahma ordered the Moon to return Tara. Tara returned and a son was soon born to Brihaspati, but the son, Mercury, really was the son of the Moon. The supreme god Brahma again returned as the war was about to resume and asked Tara whose child it was. She replied the father was the Moon and Brahma returned the child to the Moon, his father. That Brihaspati would accept Tara back after an illicit pregnancy, and return the illicit child to his father, instead of pretending the child was his own, shows the great magnanimity and generosity of the great planet Jupiter!
Brhaspati is the son of Angiras by his wife Vasuda. He is famous as the guru of the devas and he appears in many Puranic and Vedic stories. He is consulted whenever there are problems in heaven, and is the most benefic of planets.There is continuous enmity between himself and Sukra, the preceptor of the demons, and several stories illustrate the universal roles played by these two powerful brahmins. One such story appearing in several places is as follows;
During a war between the devas and the asuras, Sukra went off to propitiate Siva in order to obtain certain mantras to help the demons in their struggle. Through his network of spies, Indra, the king of heaven heard this, and sent his daughter, Jayanti to somehow gain knowledge of these mantras. Jayanti served Sukra during his penance, and being pleased he asked her to choose a boon. "Be my husband" she said, and so Sukra agreed, but stated that he would return to his disciples at the end of a ten year period.
Indra then approached his own guru, Brhaspati, bowing to him and eulogising him appropriately, and asked if this would not be an appropriate time to take some or other action? Brhaspati then assumed the form of Sukra, and entered the assembly of demons whereupon they mistook him for Sukra, and began to take instruction from him. He expounded the Jain philosophy to them, and persuaded them to leave off violence and their enmity with the devas. After ten years had expired the real Sukra returned but the demons thought it was a trick and told him to go away. So Sukra cursed them with defeat, and left. Brhaspati, seeing the enemies of the devas thus cursed considered his work done, assumed his real appearance and promptly departed.
On another occasion, again during a war between the demons and devas, the demon army was becoming distressed due to the fact that Brhaspati revived all those they killed. They approached Sukra, who realised that Brhaspati was collecting medicinal herbs from the Drona mountain and so he went there and using his yogic powers, cast the mountain into the sea. Brhaspati on going to replenish his stock of herbs went to where the mountain should have been, but could not find it. He returned to Indra, informed him of everything, whereupon the devas were forced to take flight.
Indra and Brhaspati once went to visit Siva, who decided to test their knowledge. He assumed the form of an ugly giant and appeared before the two. Indra immediately demanded that the giant remove himself. "Do you not know I am the king of heaven? Kindly say, is Siva in His apartments, or has He gone elsewhere?" The giant did not reply. Again Indra rebuked Him but to no avail, and so Indra decided to kill him, and raised his arm in order to deliver his thunderbolt. However, he became paralysed, and could do no more, and Brhaspati realising who the giant was, immediately prostrated himself, forcefully making Indra do the same.

Mythological Story or katha of Jupiter or Brihaspati
There was a certain king who had seven sons and their wives. Two Brahmins used to come there to beg alms but the wives returned them, empty handed. Therefore Jupiter deity was displeased with them, which affected adversely the prosperity and wealth of the king. When there was devastation in the kingdom and the king neared poverty, the youngest wife sought excuse from the Brahmins and started giving them alms but still the elder six denied alms to the Brahmins. The youngest wife asked the Brahmins the remedy for getting over the bad days. The Brahmins advised to keep a fast for Jupiter or Brihaspati to feed Brahmins. If anyone' s husband has gone to a foreign country, then that woman should make two human figures behind the door; that would result in early safe return of the husband. If the family is stricken with poverty then those figures should be made on a box. The king's seven sons had already gone on a foreign tour. The youngest wife observed the ritual as advised. Her husband had gone to a place, the king of which died. The king had no son. To find a suitable successor, a garland was hung on the horn of a female elephant so that whosoever is garlanded by it, he shall be the king as per the tradition of that kingdom. The elephant went all around and ultimately put the garland round youngest son's neck. He became the king. He searched for his brothers, but in vain for the sake of public welfare, the new king decided to construct a tank. Thousands of laborers were engaged, among whom his brothers also came. He called all of them took them to his palace and all started living peacefully. The worship and alms by the youngest wife brought prosperity back to the family. Then all other wives also started Jupiter or Brihaspati fast and worship. No one was ever refused alms by them, anymore.

Jupiter : It is the heaviest and the most benefic planet and represents Guru. It is very polite and religious and represents education, school, temples, oils, fats, sugar, long journeys, judges, priests and scientists. It's color is yellow, metal platinum, gem yellow sapphire and direction north - east.
Guru: Jupiter represents happiness, knowledge and expansion. Guru shows how much of the ever-expanding nature of light a person has working through them. A favorably placed Jupiter brings the awareness that as children of this light that shines in all directions, everything in life is supposed to grow, expand and be understood. Learning and teaching and supporting the spread of knowledge is natural and spontaneous for such people. A Jupiter that is unfavorably placed will make the person feel these areas are not easy, and passing on the light of knowledge comes with hardship and limitations. Such people feel disconnected from the expansive nature of our true spiritual essence. Guru, Jupiter - Think about its light, its movements: Jupiter is the largest among the planets. In the night sky, it is almost as bright as Venus, the evening star. It is big, and slow: it takes twelve years for it to make a complete revolution around the sky. Think also of its name in Sanskrit, Guru, and the primary quality having the same name. Drawing a symbolic link with the qualities of Jupiter, we can describe the nature of the mental energy called Guru Graha (or the inner Jupiter). Jupiter provides growth and expansion. It brings to fruition and it generates. That is the reason why we say that Jupiter is a "beneficial" planet. By analogy in the mental realm, Guru is kind and paternalistic. He is endowed with a great sense of ethics. He is honest, sincere and respects laws and traditions. He shows a tendency to conservatism. He appreciates his comfort.
Jupiter – The higher Jupiter is God’s grace, wisdom, ethics aligned with right behavior and optimism. The lower Jupiter can be a haughty showman, concerned with appearance, status and the
admiration of others. Jupiter is our capacity to do good, and to always wish to choose the good over the bad. He is where we expand in life and want to share God’s grace. Through wealth, children and
education we expand externally; through faith and valuing God’s grace we expand internally. Jupiter rules all of these domains. We all have a higher vision of ourselves that we are expanding toward -Jupiter shows that vision and how we would like it to play out in our lives. -Jupiter gives us the hope that things will get better. A weak Jupiter will either lack hope or be unrealistic in expressing it. A foolhardy optimism is possible. Jupiter aligned with our sense of duty will allow for our higher vision to not only lead us externally but also expand internally.

JUPITER – (GURU or BRIHASPATI)
Jupiter represents the teacher, the “Guru,” the one who leads us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. He stands for wisdom, knowledge, learning, goodness, good luck, good karma and expansion.
In the Vedas, Brihaspati is called the Guru of the Devas, the celestial or angelical beings. He is represented as a priest—full of wisdom, righteousness, justice, goodness; desirous to bless and give prosperity to everyone.
Jupiter also represents children, mainly the eldest son, and in case of woman, it represents the husband.
It is considered the most benefic planet because of its nature of giving and expanding, without expectations.
Jupiter usually blesses the areas related with its placement, but for some ascendants like Taurus, Libra or Capricorn, it can be adverse or bring inauspicious effects, because it is the ruler of difficult houses. The position of Jupiter in a birth chart will indicate the ways of spiritual learning, type of faith or religion, teachers and material prosperity.
A strong and well-placed Jupiter in a chart is an indicator of optimism, faith, interest in religion of philosophy, sense of righteousness and justice, positive contacts with teachers, wise or religious people, and good prosperity, caused by some good past karmas and spiritual tendencies. It is very common in the charts of religious people, priests, teachers, philosophers, judges, lawyers, or prosperous people.
But in some cases, an excessively strong Jupiter can lead a person to not make any effort to improve his life situation—an excessive optimism that can lead to spiritual stagnation.
An afflicted Jupiter can indicate difficulty in getting a spiritual teacher, or sometimes even getting a wrong, dishonest or fake teacher, or a difficult relationship with teachers in general. It can bring lack of faith and optimism in life, or a more materialistic view of life, or material difficulties that don’t allow the mind to expand into a more spiritual awareness.
An afflicted or weak Jupiter can indicate marital difficulties or husband’s bad health, or difficulties to have children.
Physically it is related to the fat tissues, accumulation of fluids, obesity, liver, pancreas and the sugar and fat metabolism, the hips and the feet. Its nature is Kapha or phlegmatic.
