For individuals who do not meet the admission requirements as stated in the program description,
upgrading courses are available through the College and Career Preparation/Academic Upgrading
program at Georgian. Please refer to www.georgianc.on.ca/academics/college_prep for details.
Assessment of previous learning is available. Please refer to www.georgianc.on.ca/academics/
policies for details.
Applicants who are 19 years of age or older by the first day of classes, and who lack the academic admission
qualifications, may be considered for entrance as mature students. Each applicant will be considered on an
individual basis and acceptance will be determined by counselling, Communication Placement Assessments
(CPA), previous post-secondary education and evaluation of experience. Some programs also have specific
prerequisite requirements that must be met prior to admission. Mature applicants must meet all program-
specific prerequisites. Those applying as mature students and having no documentation of Grade 12
education must supply, if requested, proof of age, such as a copy of an official birth certificate or driver’s
licence.

LAWS 2000
This course covers the legal framework within which business takes place. The student learns how to avoid legal problems, and how to deal with a lawyer. Major topics include torts, contracts, sale of goods, consumer protection, employment law, copyright and patent law with an emphasis on how these affect computer software and hardware. This certificate is for individuals who are either already in the automotive industry and are looking to upgrade their skills, or those who aspire to begin their career in the automotive profession. These part-time credit courses are currently being offered online with highly qualified industry experts and instructors. This flexible delivery method enables students to maintain their jobs, stay at home and receive academic credit for the courses completed. Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. Successful completion of six courses is required to qualify for the Automotive Business Studies Certificate of Achievement. Effective September 1, 2008, some Georgian College online courses offered by the Canadian Automotive Institute may require students to complete one or more proctored tests/exams. All students residing within a 150-kilometre radius of the Barrie Campus are required to appear in person to write these examinations or tests. Wildlife Care This program provides students with the skills needed to gain entry-level employment in a variety of situations involving non-medical work with animals and to upgrade skills for those already employed in the field or who wish to do volunteer work with animals. The program consists of a foundation component followed by the choice of three specialty components: wildlife care, shelter operations or enforcement. Two field work units are included, providing practical experience. Content includes species identification, ethical, legal and social issues, the shelter and nutritional needs of animals, and customer service skills. Admission requirements: Applicants must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD – 30 credits). Also recommended and used in the selection is Grade 12 English (C) or (U) (ENG 4C, ENG 4U). Pre-exposure to rabies and tetanus vaccination may be required. For the Enforcement option, a valid driver’s licence is required. This course covers the laws, regulations and practices governing the purchase, sale and lease of motor vehicles in Ontario. There is a thorough explanation of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 2002 (MVDA 2002; the key statute governing the registration of dealers and salespersons) and the role of the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) in the administration of that Act. Students study MVDA 2002 general regulations, MVDA 2002 code of ethics regulations, key principles of the Sales of Goods Act and the Consumer Protection Act, registration and classes of registration, advertising, contracts, disclosure and rescission. OMVC 1000 This course is offered in co-operation with the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) and is a prerequisite for registration as a salesperson or dealer with the automotive industry in Ontario. It may be taken on a correspondence basis with testing at the area local licence bureau or on-site taught by trained automotive faculty with testing completed at the end of the daily session. On-site sessions take place every month at the Courtyard by Marriott Vaughan in Toronto. In addition, graduates receive a Georgian College Certificate of Achievement (six courses required). The courses prepare people who want to enter the human resources management profession. They also serve practitioners as professional development in preparation for additional responsibilities in their workplace. All courses are credits towards the Business and Business Administration diplomas at Georgian College. Human Resources Studies program graduates receive a Georgian College Certificate of Achievement after completing the three mandatory and three option courses for a total of six courses. Students may be eligible for recognition of these courses through the Human Resource Professional Association and are advised to contact the association prior to taking the courses for more information. Students can expect to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for an entry-level position in a variety of logistics settings, including manufacturing and service industries, government offices, and inventory management.
