Today, security must become a standard part of the Parking Management System. With the rapid development of information technology also more threats are created. Therefor it is vital to set an adequate and subsequent security policy, however, these are often very complex.
WPS Parking Solutions takes security as an integral part along in the archi-tectural design of their Parking Management System. With LDAP, security is a logical part of the Parking Management System. LDAP stands for Light-weight Directory Access Protocol and is basically an active directory with users. Lots of people are already familiar with LDAP because basiccaly every corporate account to logs in based on this protocol.
To integrate Active Directory LDAP in our Parking Management system, we have taken into account several suppositions:

From small to large PMS
Before LDAP security was integrated in the local ParkiD™ system (WPS Par-king Management software). Local integration resulted in the fact that not always the proper rights were set up for personnel and customers. Besides, WPS have designed default permission roles in the local parking manage-ment system that works very well for smaller organizations. In large or-ganizations, the risk of having default permissions could result in security issues. WPS came up with a solution.
Solution
The solution to overcome the security issues for larger parking manage-ment system was found in the central configuration of users, groups and permissions via a domain controller, active directory and LDAP.
Domain controllers and active directory
The Domain controller is a server in a network that responds to security authentications request. Authentication request can be for example logins. The domain controller checks the permissions of the person login into the system. The active directory domain controller authecticates and autorises all users in the domain type network assigning and enfocing security poli-cies for all users and computers.

Connections in ParkiD™
To setup an Active Directory in our Parking Management Software ParkiD in the setup screen we have a server detail block, a user detail block and a group block.
The server block displays the sections on the server where the users and groups can be found. The user detail screen contains parameters that are linked to what is called attributes. The parameter describes the exact word that matches characteristics in the Active Directory. The Group detail block contains the details about where the group can be found and which para-meters are relevant for the groups.
The groups that are created within the Active Directory contain users who are administrated by the client company. ParkiD™ only connects the LDAP groups of the company to the local PMS roles. This way a user can have certain permissions in the Parking Management Sytem, depending on the group he or she is administrated in.
