WHAT IS SHELTER?

 Anything serving as shield or protection from danger, bad weather or a place of refuge.

 How the concept of shelter was begun ?

 Living requirement –food- from animals-skin was used to cover the body to protect from the heat as well as from the cold.

 Lived in the caves where animals use to live  They made their homes by the shrubs and

leaves , the huts were not strong to protect from the heat, heavy rains and forest fire

(5)

 Heavy winds, heavy sunheat.

 Due to this they have started constructing the shelter by using the bamboos but use to cover the roof with leaves they found leakages of

water during the rainy season and heavy cold weather

 Further they realised that wooden planks

would be better to protect from heat , rain and cold weather. They have started cutting the

trees .

(6)

 At last they thought to protect from that the natural calamities like heavy rains, heavy

floods, forest fire, heavy winds, they have started worshipping the nature and started performing Vriksha pooja, Kamadhenu pooja, Naga Pooja, Nadhi Pooja, worshipping of hills, to overcome the Natural calamities.

 We being Indians, give prominence for symbols for example Adike mara is Shiva, Adike is lord Ganesha.

(7)

DIVISIONS IN VAASTHU SHASTRA

 They are four Divisions in Vaasthu Shastra.

1. Bhoomi

2. Prasada – Construction of buildings

3. Yana – Vehicles used for travel and transport 4. Shayana – The table , chairs, cots are used for

(8)

 Vaasthu Shastra is also called as Stapathya vedhas  Durga shilpa

Nagara shilpa – Is used to build the town ship Yantra shilpa

Sainya ayudha shilpa Ayas shilpa

Kasta shilpa Swarna shilpa Moorthy shilpa Jagath shilpa

(9)

WHAT IS VAASTHU SHASTRA

 It deals with various aspects of designing and building living or working environments that are in harmony with the physical and

metaphysical forces.

 It uses Pancha Bhoothas (5 elements),

8 directions, in finding the right flow of positive energy for a building.

 It is an old sub-system of Astrology, is

independent of Astrology, but the basics of Astrology is needed to properly understand this branch.

(10)

WHAT IS VAASTHU SHASTRA

 It is similar to Feng Shui, but also different.  In Feng Shui only flow of energy is concerned,

but in Vaasthu even the exact directions of the site, rooms, doors, various objects, materials, etc are taken in to account and recommended to place in.

(11)

 Vaasthu believes that how we align our physical

space in relation to nature and how we set up the interiors inside a structure have a powerful impact on us – an impact that can be either positive or

negative.

Before we can achieve

“Internal peace”, We need to find

“External peace”.

(12)

AIMS OF VAASTHU SHASTRA

 The Vaasthu Shastra uplifts and balance

between man’s mind and body

 And wants to give physical comforts and security.  In design space, with wealthy surroundings a

planning is required to lead

“Lawful”, “Peaceful”

and

(13)

VAASTHU SHASTRA

 Vaasthu Shastra was also found in  Matsya Purana,

 Agni Purana,

 Vishnu Purana, &  Garuda Purana.

 In these Puranas, the details are available

especially about architecture and sculpture,

Bharatha Natya Shastra speaks about theatre for performing Natya (Dance).

(14)

VAASTHU SHASTRA

 Padma Samhita deals more about planning and

construction of building only.

 Stapatya Veda is an annexure of Atarva Veda.  It consists of mathematics-the calculation of

required for measurement of site, construction, computation of geometry – creativity of shapes, graphic arts-more speaks about designs and

elevation of the building.

 Structural Engineering is the subject which deals

with structure the building, Astronomy-logical study of stars, Sculptural arts-how to carve and engrave the sculptures.

(15)

VAASTHU SHASTRA

 Later development of Vaasthu Shastra was found

in many granthas namely,

1. Eshanashiva Gurudeva Padathi,

2. Kamikagama,

3. Samarangana Sutradhara,

4. Maya Matha,

(16)

VAASTHU SHASTRA

Vastu Reva Ithi Vaasthu Vastu = Materials

Vaasthu = Place of dwelling

The meaning of the above is that “The place of

dwelling is made out of many materials.”

In this place, the human being is going to dwell, (or

live), there is a planetary influence on the human being.

Hence Vaasthu Shastra deals with the 8 directions,

with 8 direction Rulers,

Pancha Bhootas, Jala, Agni, Vaayu, Prithvi, and Brahma

Naabi.

As well as planetary Lordships on it’s Vaasthu Purusha

(17)
(18)
(19)
(20)
(21)
(22)
(23)

To understand Vaasthu, we must

understand the Vedic theory of the

composition of the universe.

To create the universe, the spiritual

creative force (Brahman) assumed the

manifested form of Lord Brahma, the

creator, who created the five basic

elements out of his own essence.

(24)

First came space,

from space came air,

from air came fire,

from fire came water and

From water came earth.

(25)

 According to Vaasthu , the basic five elements of space, air, fire, water, and earth are every where.

 Inside us and around us and the presence of each element is beneficial to us.

 Looking specially at the elements within us ,

digestive fire helps to breakdown the food that we eat and

 Burns the calories that give us energy.

(26)

 The flow of air inhaled during the act of

breathing pumps the blood through our system and keeps us alive.

 Nearly two thirds of our body is made of a composition that includes water.

 Without presence of water none of us could survive.

(27)

 From conception, our body requires space and

continues to need space through out its existence.

 And the quality of the earth is present in our bones

and in all our vital minerals, such as zinc and iron, which keep us healthy.

(28)

 According to Vaasthu, these same five elements

are also present in the forms that we call architecture.

 Each of the elements has a representative deity,

and together, they share a predetermined location on the site, in the building, and again in each room.

(29)

 The Five Elements

 Brahma represents the element of space – Aakasha,

 Vaayu ,the element of Air – Gaali,  Agni, the element of Fire – Agni,

 Isa, the element of water – Jala and  Prithvi, the element of earth – Prithvi.

(30)

 In recent years, Geo Biologists have been

studying the impact of electric and magnetic fields that they claim can interfere with our health and deplete our energy.

 While the ancient Vaasthu texts do not mention these fields by name, many Geo Biologists believe that Vaasthu sages

understood the potential harm connected to these fields.

(31)

 The basic elements allocated their appropriate

space in a site and in construction, serve as a

counter-force that offers us protection from these negative sources.

(32)

JALA-WATER-LIQUID-AAPA

 The element of water is in the North-East corner of the Mandala, along with the Vedic deity Isa.

 In the course of evolution of Hinduism, Isa become Rudra and much later became Shiva, the destructive force in the Hindu trinity.

(33)

JALA-WATER-LIQUID-AAPA

 Spiritually, North-East, an intermediate

direction is considered the gateway to the

gods-a belief reinforced by a myth about Shiva, the god of destruction, and the Goddess Ganga.  Vaasthu believes that the tilt in the earth’s axis

leads to temperature changes and the seasonal variation in the length of day and night, draws in a wide range of cosmic energy through the NorthEast direction.

(34)

JALA-WATER-LIQUID-AAPA

 Inside the house, the NorthEast is ideal for a quiet room for meditation or study. In the NorthEast of a room place a contemplative object-an image of something or a picture of living person whom you love or revere.

 The element water is present in the liquid

within the cell membrane. Water is present in all body fluids such as plasma, saliva, digestive juices and enzymes.

(35)

AGNI – FIRE – ENERGY-ANALA

 The South East corner belongs to the element of fire and to Agni, the Vedic god of fire.

 Agni, called the light of knowledge, also represents the awakening of the soul.

 In Hinduism, the dead bodys are cremated.  As part of sacrifice, the family member who

carries the flaming torch around the funeral pyre finally lights the head of the deceased to permit the liberation of the soul.

(36)

AGNI – FIRE – ENERGY-ANALA

 Thus, fire is the element that is used to free the soul from its entrapment within the body.

 Fire is used in most important Hindu

ceremonies, from rituals in the temple that honour the temple deity to those rituals

performed at the important moments in a human’s life from birth through death.

(37)

AGNI – FIRE – ENERGY-ANALA

 On site, anything that is associated with fire or electricity should preferably be located in the South East quadrant.

 In the interior of the house, the kitchen is

ideally located in the South-East quadrant and within a room; the South-East corner is a good location for electrical equipment, such as an entertainment system and a computer.

(38)

AGNI – FIRE – ENERGY-ANALA

 The fire element is the universal force in nature that produces heat and radiates light.

 Fire is believed to burn or destroy the ignorance and makes the truth shine.

 It regulates the metabolic processes regulating the cell by controlling the functioning of

enzymes.

(39)

PRITHVI-EARTH-SOLID-DHAARA

 The South-West quadrant belongs to the element Earth.

 The South-West quadrant is also associated with wisdom.

 When we place ourselves in the South West, we gather strength as the beneficiaries of time

honoured insight and wisdom.

(40)

PRITHVI-EARTH-SOLID-DHAARA

 This part of the site should bear the heaviest load.

 The South-West is perfect for a rock garden or heavy sculptures. Inside the house, the master bedroom or the living room should be located in the South-West.

(41)

PRITHVI-EARTH-SOLID-DHAAR

A

 If you have children sleeping in this part of the house,

this location can make them overbearing and they may try to dominate.

 The heaviest and largest pieces of furniture should

also be in the South-Western part of each room.

 In general this quadrant should serve as a barrier to

hold in the spiritual forces and positive energy that move from the North-East through the site, the house and each room to the South-West.

 Earth provides structure to the cell as it manifests

itself in the solid structure of the body.

(42)

VAYU-AIR-GAS-ANILA

 The element of air, the sustaining breath of all life forms, is in the North-West quadrant.

Vaayu is the vedic god of winds.

 The presence of air signifies movements, the thoughts that lead to accomplishment and success.

 North-West is the most suitable space for a guest bedroom. Your guests won’t overstay their welcome, will instinctively move on.

(43)

VAYU-AIR-GAS-ANILA

 If you watch too much television, make an

exception and instead of placing the television in the South-East corner of a room, put the

television set in the North-West.

 This location, involved with movement will insure that you grow restless. After a while, you will get up and leave.

(44)

VAYU-AIR-GAS-ANILA

 The element of air consists of the gases present in the body.

 This element sets the universe in motion.

 It is a transparent and kinetic force that moves the blood through vessels, wastes from the

body and thoughts through the mind.

 It denotes muscular movements of the body.

(45)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 Brahma, the creator, reigns from the centre, where he shares his holy area, the Brahma Sthana is a repository for spiritual energy,

which collects here and then radiates outward in the form of beneficial vibrations in every

possible direction.

 The presence of Brahma in the centre of a secular space sends out vibrations that

reenergize and give positive feelings to all who are present.

(46)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 An open centre reduces the possibility of

hurting the cosmic spirit and also permits the free flow of spiritual vibrations throughout the entire building.

 The principle of an open centre should also be mirrored in each room so that the spiritual

energies can collect and radiate out vibrations into each individual space as well, thereby

creating the same beneficial effect.

(47)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 If an element is introduced into a space

belonging to another element, and there is no reasonable way to undo the problem, the

harmony between the two elements will be disturbed.

 For example, water may be dominant in a space belonging to fire.

(48)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 Often this is unavoidable. (we rarely have the option of changing the location of our kitchen or bathroom, for instance, unless we are

designing our homes from scratch.)

 To restore the harmony between the two elements, you can make an appeasement;

introduce a calming deity, a symbol of deity, or a prescribed combination of colours to and to the element that presides over the violated

(49)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 The space occupied by the cell denotes the last of the elements.

 It is everywhere and generally within the body like mouth, nostrils and abdomen.

 In the human mind it is the vessel that receives all impressions, the space in heart accepts love.  In brief we can say that element Earth provides

definite mass to the human body.

(50)

AKASHA-SPACE-VACUUM-DHRUVA

 The air element provides definite motion to the body.

 The element space contains several structures.  The element fire provides definite colour,

brightness and enhances the process of digestion.

 The water element is responsible for binding all structures with each other.
