Island Cove Marina - Alternative Location for NYCP General Membership Meeting in March Note: There are two entrances to the facility –
(pictured) the side entrance and another entrance is
on the upper side of the building with fewer steps. Directions:
If coming from the east, take the bridge over Barrancas as if you were going to NAS
Pensacola...turn on the first right at bottom of bridge (Weiss Street I believe). Stay on it for a couple of blocks--you are in a residential neighborhood. The first marina you pass is "Pelican's Perch" but keep going another block until you see another sign on the right that says "Island Cove Marina" You are welcome to park in either upper or lower parking lot.
FEBRUARY 2021
From the Helm:
Winter is hanging on but brighter skies and spring breezes are on the way (maybe a thunderstorm or two also)! Our first Regatta of the year will be on Feb 27, Maxine Sansom Series Race #1 which is also the first race of our Commodore’s Cup series. Maxine Sansom was a legend in local sailing and more will be written about her and shared later this month. We are pleased to have Mark Smith, an experienced sailor and race officer, taking over the reins of being Fleet Captain. Mark will also be our Principal Race Officer for most, if not all, of our races this year. He will be looking for Race
Committee crew, so please let him know if you want to be part of the RC.
The Crow’s Nest aboard NAS Pensacola remains a construction zone due to minor water intrusion and wet sheetrock needing replacement. Therefore, we have been looking for an alternate location to hold our meetings. Island Cove Marina at 805 Lakewood Rd on Bayou Chico in Pensacola has agreed to let us hold a meeting there on March 12, a Friday night. It is a beautiful facility and we appreciate the owner, John Naybor, allowing us to use it. (See more photos of the facility following my article.) There is plenty of both indoor and outdoor space to practice social distancing/masking during the time we are together. Plans are being finalized (food, drink, etc.) but at this point the main program will be to present the 2020 NYCP Sailing Awards. So please plan to attend, if comfortable. More information to follow as our Social/Party Committee completes its work. All NORs are posted for 2021 on Regatta Network, GYA Schedule pages, and the NYCP website under the “Racing” tab. SSIs for Maxine #1 should be posted early February. Let your sailing friends know we are looking forward to a good season and getting back whatever “normal” now is to be.
Looking forward, April 17-18 is the next Regatta for us, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Navy Yacht Club Pensacola in 1931 by a small group of Naval Aviation pilot candidates. We have added a long-distance race to the Sea Buoy and back, so it will be a full weekend of sailing. Our hope is to

MIA OTTESEN
Greetings to All,
I participated in the “Ask Dave” educational webinar from the Cortez Racing Association (my sister’s yacht club in San Diego, California) about the changes to the Racing Rules for 2021-2024 and found it to be quite informative. If you missed it – there will be other educational opportunities in the future. Watch for email updates and check the information listed in the Foghorn. I can’t wait to get out on the water.
Yes, I have the sailing bug and would like to invite anyone who may want to learn to sail on the club’s Flying Scot to come out and join me.
I understand that there are various opportunities on the GYA Race calendar to sail the Flying Scot and represent our club. Again, who wants to join me? Our Fleet Captain Mark Smith wants to get as many people out on the water as possible.
On another note, our NYCP board researched the Island Cove Marina as an alternate meeting location to hold our gatherings – until the Crow’s Nest repairs and updates have been completed. It looks like it may work for our members on a temporary basis. Watch for more updates on our meeting location status.
If you would like to share any ideas for social functions for the upcoming year, please let me know.

GALLEY BITES
By Julie ConnerleySince Mother Nature has not decided winter is over yet, this month's recipe, Spicy Chili, is one that most households have made at one time or another. It is offered compliments of Camping World's loyal follower, Peter Hoffman.
The history of chili is somewhat muddled, with some historians believing that a version of it was made thousands of years ago in an area bordered by the mountains of Bolivia and Brazil. However, all authorities agree that it was NOT created in Mexico. Recognized in the early 1800's in southwest Texas, and usually referred to as "chili con carne," the dish was originated by working-class people and reportedly "loathed by Mexicans."
SPICY CHILI
INGREDIENTS
2 lbs your favorite ground meat (chicken, turkey, beef, or pork)
1 lb spicy Italian sausage, ground
5 cup diced eggplant (1 large eggplant or 3 Chinese eggplants)
2 large onions
1 cup diced green chilis 1 cup Stevia
1 cup chili power 1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 Tbl powdered Hersey's Cocoa 3 Tbl smokey paprika
1 Tbl curry powder 1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 bottle of 8-10 oz sugar-free BBQ sauce 2 24-oz cans traditional pasta sauce 1 14-oz can diced or crushed tomatoes 2 Tbl olive oil
INSTRUCTIONS
●Cut the eggplant into 1/2" thick rounds and place on a cookie sheet (no need to peel). Spray with cooking nonstick spray and put under the broiler till they start to get brown. After approximately 10 minutes, turn the eggplant over. Other side normally only takes 5 minutes. You can also put them on the BBQ on a nonstick cooking sheet and cook them 10 minutes on med high then turn them over and cook
for 5 minutes. After the eggplant is done, put it in the freezer.
●Dice the onions and cook them in a large pot (this must be the same pot you cook the chili in) with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cook for about 10 minutes. Take out of the pan and set aside for now.
●Using same pot you cooked onions in, brown the meat and sausage with 1 tablespoon of olive oil until done. Once the meat is done, put the cooked onions back in the pot with the meat and heat it on low.
●In a mixing bowl combine all the dry ingredients: 1 cup Stevia, 1 cup chili powder, 1 teaspoon
cinnamon, 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, 3
tablespoons paprika, 1 teaspoon curry powder. Mix together then add to the meat and onions. Turn heat to medium and continue mixing till you start to smell all the seasoning--approximately 3 minutes. ●Add all the wet ingredients: 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/2 bottle BBQ sauce, 2 cans pasta sauce, 1 can diced tomatoes, 1 cup green chilis. Mix well and bring to a boil, then turn to low or simmer for 2 hours. (Chef' s tip: I pour it all into my large oval size Crock-pot and cook on high for about 3-4 hours. That way it does not burn.)
●After the chili has cooked for 2 hours on simmer (or 3-4 hours in the Crock-pot), take the eggplant out of the freezer and cut it into small squares about the size of chili beans. Mix in the eggplant and then let cook for an additional 30 minutes.
Bon Appetite!

Hello All,
I would like to invite you to consider becoming active in our sailing program for 2021 and request your support. One way to help out – with the preparations for the Race Committee. Your help would be needed to break out the marks, race flags and to launch Striper as well as carry water, ice, sandwiches out to the signal boat. (If you are able to help, contact me.)
We are in the planning stages of trying to get out the 2020 Awards to our Navy Yacht Club members who earned the special recognition from their efforts during 2020. Hopefully, we can do this either at our membership meeting in March or at the rescheduled Sailors Banquet for a new date sometime in Spring or Summer.
If you are interested in being trained to help with our regattas and any of our other yachting activities that will be coming up in 2021 – please, let me know we would love to have you help. There is always something fun to do!

NYCP Flying Scot boat is at the Navy Base and in the process of getting repairs made from the damages received from Hurricane Sally. If you are interested in practicing with the racing crews or just would like to go for a sail let us know and we will work out a time with you and be happy to help with any instructions necessary for you to enjoy our club boat along with this beautiful place we call home. The Flying Scot is a classic boat that never goes out of style.
Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 8 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship…thereby offering the potential
for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if
a yacht wasn’t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 4 *offshore races only in 2021. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship and would need to race in only 2 of the 3 to qualify.
There’s definitely room for multihull divisions as
well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc.

Pensacola Bay 2020 - Yachting Awards
Banquet
Friday, January 22, 2021
At the Pensacola Yacht Club
POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING OR SUMMER 2021
The annual yachting awards banquet, hosted by George Gamble and Pensacola Yacht Club has been canceled. PYC Commodore Tom Pace said, "....It is recognized that while there were limited opportunities for organized sailing events during 2020, we must still provide an opportunity for those who were able to achieve a measure of success to be so recognized." PYC will be coordinating an event later in the year.
Updates to the Repairs of the NYCP Support Boat – Striper submitted by Ken Pyle, Commodore Bob Ayers and I worked on Striper this week. The damaged right side trailer tire has been replaced so the trailer is now functional. Bob checked on replacing the glass in the right-side window (destroyed when the Flying Scot mast fell onto Striper). The cost is prohibitive and salvage options are slim to none. Bob decided to put the aluminum frame back together and reinstall it without glass or plexiglass. He believes it will be sturdy enough for our uses and provide sufficient support for the right-side front windscreen. Installing a piece of Plexiglass is a future option. We ran the motor last week at the wash rack and all is working well. We are hoping to put it in the water next week to get some time on the motor at high speed to ensure all is working properly.

Gulf Yachting Association (GYA)
Activities
Julie Connerley
GYA's winter meeting, hosted by PYC January 8-10 was well attended and very informative. For those who attended Saturday's dinner and annual awards, the evening's guest speaker, America's Cup host, Tucker Thompson, provided an up-to-the-minute update on American Magic's (AM) quest for the cup. Our Pensacola Bay and some local sailors were featured in the AM video.
Race Management committee chair, Randy Fitzpatrick-Wainwright (FYC), announced that due to the unusual circumstances of 2020, all committee members would continue for another year. The question she posed to those present was how their clubs are dealing with the restrictions currently in place. Southern Yacht Club has, like most YCs, transitioned to virtual skippers' meetings. They are planning to host the J-22 mid-winters in mid-March,
and made some modifications to the NOR: a lowered entry fee, reduced timeline for late registration, social event details contingent upon conditions at time of regatta, and holding awards ceremonies outside whenever possible. Another suggestion by SYC was their creation of a Sunday morning Pandemic Racing Series--no race
committee, no fees, initially single and double handed, then increased to 3 persons per boat. Pensacola Beach Yacht Club's decision to award trophies on the water was also mentioned.
A plea for YCs to recruit folks to qualify as judges in our area was stressed. Many judges have
"retired," and for those GYA regattas that require judges, it is often difficult to bring someone in from outside the host club's area. It should be noted that one does not have to have certification as a Race Officer to become involved with the Judges program, though it certainly helps to be familiar with racing procedures. Race Officers and Judges are separate tracks. The availability of online race management courses to educate club members who volunteer to work on Race Committee was also discussed. Pensacola Yacht Club Past Commodore, Alan McMillan, presented a follow-up to the Dauphin Island tragedy of 2015. "While some aspects cannot be discussed because of legal issues, there were lessons that we can learn," said McMillan. He was brought on board by attorneys representing Fairhope Yacht Club (FYC) to serve as an expert witness in two separate lawsuits filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. Count 1: negligent infliction of emotional distress; count 2: failure to provide assistance at sea; and count 3: wanton or gross negligence (having to do with warning participants of possible severe weather, etc.)
These lawsuits covered 5-6 people and both were handled by one firm. He noted that both the plaintiffs and defendants had expert witnesses for weather and sailing rules. McMillan's role was unique because he was the sole local expert who was able to advise FYC's attorneys about deposition questions to ask. His bottom line? The world around us has changed--and our sport of sailing has been affected by these changes. He shared examples of issues in the lawsuit allegations: U.S. Coast Guard permits for racing; the huge disconnect between US Sailing's Racing Rules and the Race Management Handbook (which speaks in generalizations while the rules are the rules); the social aspect of racing--parties and alcohol which have always been part of the sport; and a minor
administrative/communications error by the host club, which was quickly corrected, but was
"magnified" by the plaintiffs' attorneys. A reference to the liability waiver, was also challenged in the lawsuits. While YCs should continue to include a liability waiver, some "tightening" of the language was suggested. On April 8, 2019--four years after the Dauphin Island tragedy--the USCG released a
recommendations report of its findings regarding the incident. McMillan's presentation was a real eye-opener for many!
The Offshore Racing Council's session focused on the ORA-1 (Offshore Racing Association) rating system which goes into effect January 1, 2022. GYA will continue to support those clubs that want to continue scoring races under the PHRF rating system, or dual scoring PHRF and ORA-1 through December 31, 2021.
Sail Safe! Stay Safe--until we are all together again.

Attached are photos from the GYA Winter Meeting Awards Banquet. I have at least one photo of every NYCP member who attended (and some of us attended Saturday's committee meetings as well--most interesting).
The America's Cup presentation was, in my opinion, even better than last year when we had 350
people. With only 103 RSVPs accepted, the tables were not crowded and there were two large screens, one facing Ballroom A, the other Ballroom B. Tucker shared some new trivia, and updated videos
including a clip of Patriot on Pensacola Bay. All in all, it was a very productive day/night.

Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: www.navypnsyc.org for all of the yacht club news such as revised event dates,
upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact info. Also check out the photos from the Navy Yacht Club activities throughout the year. If you have a picture to submit …be sure to let us know.Have you taken any digital photos lately? Maybe you have some photos from a recent trip or photos of the kids or grandkids? Saved any important documents lately, like a 1099R, a birth certificate, or the warrantee for that new TV? Whether you download photos or any other files, you need to be sure you save them to your computer so you can print them, or just view them when you have the time. But remember, computers do crash, and it may happen to you. When they do crash there goes all those important photos or documents. To ensure you do not lose any valuable files, make sure you back them up regularly to the cloud, or to an external hard drive. A one or a two Terra Byte hard drive can be purchased for fewer than one hundred dollars and set up to automatically back up your files on a regular basis. It is money well spent, especially if it saves those pictures and documents that are so important to you.

Who else in our Navy Yacht Club family has an interesting moment in history here on the Pensacola Naval Air Station?
Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long
prestigious history:
• Founded by flight students at NASP in 1931
• Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique club competition concept that was, by request of the base, part of the 1964 50th Anniversary Celebration of NASP
• *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP
• *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Naval Aviation
• *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola Bay that has been replicated by other local clubs
• *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots, offering military students the opportunity to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost
• *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have' given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida, thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht clubs
• NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship
• In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders:
*A. Dixon winged in 1931
*William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931 *J.H. Smith winged in 1932
We have been entrusted with a rich legacy,
for which we should feel honored to protect.

Viva Florida Fun Fact
As the Nation’s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay
Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola and other historical moments! Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts
On the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, during which their ship had been at sea, the crew of the carrier Enterprise stood in stunned silence as it entered port and saw firsthand the damage wrought by the enemy. On Feb. 1, 1942, the crew struck back as Enterprise joined the carrier Yorktown in launching air strikes against the Marshall and Gilbert Islands, Naval aviation’s first offensive action against the Japanese during World War II.
Viva Florida –Promoting Florida’s History and Culture
On Feb. 20, 1942, Lt. Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare found himself alone, engine trouble having forced his wingman to return to the carrier Lexington (CV 2). Thus, it was left to him to defend against a group of enemy bombers
approaching from Rabaul. He proved up to the task, receiving credit for downing five enemy planes and damaging a sixth. For his actions, he became the first Naval aviator of World War II to receive the Medal of Honor. Feb. 22, 1974, marked a special day in the lives of a group of officers completing flight training, their dress-blue uniforms soon to be adorned with the distinctive wings of gold identifying each one of them as a Naval aviator. Yet, when one particular name was called, it represented not only a personal achievement, but also a milestone for the Navy as Lt. j.g. Barbara Ann Allen became the first female Naval aviator.
Pensacola Fun Fact!
Because flight students with limited experience are frequently at the controls, the Navy has for many years painted its training aircraft with high-visibility color schemes. On Feb. 9, 1935, the Navy ordered the XN3N-1, the prototype for a trainer that would serve for nearly three decades, its last years indoctrinating Naval Academy midshipmen in Annapolis, Md. Painted in the training aircraft scheme of the era, it earned an enduring nickname familiar to thousands of Naval aviators — the “Yellow Peril.”
During the early years of the Cold War, Naval aviation’s mission requirements included long-range delivery of nuclear weapons. Some of the first aircraft assigned to carry out these flights, patrol planes were never meant to fly from a ship. On Feb. 7, 1950, one of these aircraft, a P2V-3C Neptune, launched from the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB 42) steaming off the Florida coast. The airplane completed a 25 hour, 59 minute flight of 5,060 miles before landing in California the following day, the longest flight ever made from the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Day 1 – Prada Cup Round Robins
INEOS TEAM UK went from zero to hero by winning both races with solid starts, smooth sailing and protecting their leads over their opponents, both American Magic and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team respectively
Day 2
It was a tough day for American Magic, which spent way too much time in "displacement" mode rather than up on the foils. A tricky and yet revealing day for the Challengers competing in the PRADA Cup Round Robins due the to the tricky light wind conditions that frequently forced the AC75’s off their foils. A positive day for the Challenger of Record of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli as the Italians took a nerve-wracking win against American Magic on the first race of the day to lodge their first point on the board. The second race of the day, once again was the British challenger INEOS TEAM UK that again surprised many by winning their third race in a row in conditions they were expected to struggle in against the Americans.
Day 3
American Magic was sailing at about 42 knots entering the final gate of a six-leg race. They were leading the Italian team by over 700 meters, basically cruising to their first victory of the Prada Cup Series. As they tacked to port to round the mark, gusty winds, up to 23 knots or so (from 12 knots steady approaching the gate) hit them and the entire boat and leeward foil came out of the water and then crashed back into the water and slowly capsized. It appears the initial recovery/repair plan is to spend the next 8-10 days repairing damage (large hole in hull plus other equipment TBD) to be ready for the Prada Cup semi-finals that begin on 29 January. There is little/no chance they will be able to compete next weekend (Fri-Sun) to finish the initial Round Robin series. Bad break, but the boat was “flying” at amazing speeds and showed the performance we all believe she had which will make her very competitive and possibly a favorite to eventually win the Prada Cup and go on to challenge the Kiwis in the America’s Cup races starting on March 6. All is NOT lost. They lived to fight another day! Go American Magic.
Day 4
It was a close race all 6 legs with nine lead changes, but in the end the Brits won against the Italians to advance to the Prada Cup final. The Italians now will go up against the Americans in American Magic in the Prada Cup Semi-finals. The winner between the Italians and Americans will advance to the Prada Cup Finals against the Brits to determine the winner of the Prada Cup and the right to challenge the Kiwis (New Zealand) in the America's Cup finals starting March 6th. Enjoy!
Prada Cup – Semi Finals – Day 1
Not a good day for American Magic. They lost both races so need to win at least one of two races scheduled or the Prada Semi-Finals are over and AM goes home. The first day of the PRADA Cup Semi-Final went smooth as silk for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli which scored the first two points on the leader board against New York Yacht Club American Magic that, against all the odds, managed to make the start line after the Round Robin’s dramatic capsize.
Semi-Finals – Day 2
Another bad day for American Magic. The Italians were nearly flawless in lighter, steady winds and AM seemed to have some control and stability issues. Very proud of the effort to bet the boat back on the water and competing, but they just didn't have the performance needed. Hopefully, NYYC will enter the Cup Challenge again. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli finally got the redemption they were looking for and, scoring four points in a row, win the PRADA Cup Semi-Final. Despite the Herculean effort of putting PATRIOT back on the water, American Magic are now eliminated from the PRADA Cup. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli jump rightfully to the Final against INEOS TEAM UK less than 2 weeks away. The Italians who seem to have find the pace after a limping Round Robin will be hard opponent to beat for the British team.
Prada Cup Finals
The 13-race Final between the two leading teams, will start on the 13th of February, the first team to score seven points will win the PRADA Cup and face the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand on March 6th.
