English – Writing

- Imagine you are a character in the book you are currently reading. Your challenge is to write a diary entry as if you were this character.

Remember:-

 You are writing in past tense – events that have already happened.

 Writing should be in chronological order – from the start of the day to the end of day.

 You are the character so include pronouns such as I, we and my.  It’s not just a retell of events so add some emotion.

- How were you feeling at this point? - What were you thinking?

- Is there anything you wanted to say but didn’t? - Are you looking forward to something or regretting something that has happened?

Short Example – Can you guess the character and book?

Dear Diary

Honestly today was just ridiculous! I don’t know why those boys bother asking for my help if they are just going to go off and do what they like. Harry and that magical invisibility cloak, he thinks it make him invincible too! Don’t even get me started on Ron and that disgusting rat of his. He better not accuse my precious Crookshanks of eating him again as I was not impressed with the baseless accusations last time the silly thing went missing.

Science – Home Challenges!

Sit really quietly somewhere either in or outside. What can you hear? Can you hear any bird song? Can you identify the birds?

Estate Agent Challenge - Pick your favourite setting from a book, it could be

Hogwarts Castle or Hagrid’s Hut from Harry Potter, or perhaps Santa’s Grotto from The Christmasaurus. The choice is all yours! Once you have chosen a setting your task is to create an estate agent poster as if you were trying to sell the place. I want to see lots of detail – make it look its best. The poster must also include a brief description of the chosen setting. Example – Can you guess the book and the setting?

This extraordinary house is located on the outskirts of the beautiful woods and is part of a close community, which includes the family who built this home. All the local houses have their own unique features. This one in particular boasts a natural rustic look, as it is made entirely of locally sourced twigs. Though a safe neighbourhood it is recommended you lock your doors as it is rumoured wolves like to venture out of the forest in search of their next meal!

Olympic Games

For the first time in its history the Olympics Games has been postponed, now scheduled to take place in 2021. However, that does not mean the Olympics is delayed for the children of Year 3!

Your challenge is to create your own mini Olympic Games at home. Using what you have around the house we want you to create your own set of challenges. Each event must have a way of being measured. It could be measuring the time taken, the distance or the number of times completed. You can complete your Olympics on your own and try and beat your scores each day to see an improvement or challenge other members of your family to take part too and see who takes the gold medal!

Design a Secret Garden

We know lots of you have been making the most of your time outside in your garden or on your daily exercise so the Year 3 Team thought you might enjoy this creative challenge.

The RHS have created a ‘Design a Secret Garden’ competition.

We would like young people to imagine they have discovered the gates to a hidden, secret garden and to let us know what it looks like.

They can choose how they would like to showcase their garden. Perhaps they would like to draw or paint their design, create a collage or model, or even plant up a miniature version of it. Entrants should think about the different elements of their garden and let us know why have they chosen them. Would they like their garden to attract wildlife with pollinator friendly plants or be a calming place to think with a gentle stream running through it? Their garden can have whatever they wish in it but just be sure to explain why. https://schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/Competitions/The-Secret-Garden

It is up to you and your grown-ups if you would like to officially enter the competition but we thought it was a great idea for you to at least try at home. You can send your designs and photos in on the Year 3 Purple Mash Blog for everyone to see. Remember to be creative and use what you have at home. You could produce a drawing, painting a 3-D model or plant a mini garden – it is up to you!

Family Time

Kindness Jar

Small acts of kindness go a long way. At school we have discussed what it means to ‘fill someone’s bucket’ and each have a bucket in our classrooms. Every time a class member does something kind they add a pompom to the bucket. Once the bucket is filled the class get a treat.

Below is a special family variation to help us all remember. It is the small acts of kindness that mean the most in these difficult times.

Create your own Kindness Jar at home by decorating an old jar, tub or box with whatever you have at home. When someone in the house does something kind, write it on a piece of paper and add it to the jar. When the jar is full the family get a treat to be decided together.

(7)

Maths - How long did it take?

Have a try at these activities and use a stopwatch, a timer on a phone or tablet to keep track of your time. Can you improve your time for each activity over five days? Perhaps you can use some of these ideas when you create your own Olympics as part of the P.E challenge.
