World Refugee Day June 20

Day to honor the courage, the struggles, and the

contribu-tions of refugees.

The UN Refugee Agency describes a growing crisis in the world today:

"The refugee challenge in the 21st century is changing rapidly. People are forced to flee their homes for increas-ingly complicated and interlinked reasons. Some 40 mil-lion people worldwide are already uprooted by violence and persecution, and it is likely that the future will see more people on the run as a growing number of push fac-tors compound one another to create conditions for fur-ther forced displacement.

"Today people do not just flee persecution and war but also injustice, exclusion, environmental pressures, com-petition for scarce resources and all the miserable human consequences of dysfunctional states.

"The task facing the international community in this new environment is to find ways to unlock the potential of refugees who have so much to offer if they are given the opportunity to regain control over their lives."

The United Nations and many other agencies and organi-zations are trying to provide assistance to refugees around the world. Yet at any given moment, millions of poor and vulnerable men, women, and children are mak-ing their way across borders, walkmak-ing with all their pos-sessions on their back or piled upon trucks and buses. More than one million a year hand themselves over to untrustworthy smugglers promising them passage to a safe haven. In new locations where they do not know the language, they are treated with disdain by locals who see them as competition for their jobs and resources. Disease spreads easily through refugee camps, compounding their problems.

Some things to do as we observe this day Pray

Honor the courage of refugees in facing a trinity of de-mons — fear, poverty and disease, and hatred. Include refugees in your prayers as you remember their struggles and hardships and their odyssey to achieve a better life. Take Action

Make a contribution to an organization providing ser-vices to refugees.

The United Nations Refugee Agency lists what you can give with specific amounts.

Doctors without Borders provides medical care to refu-gee populations. Many church and nonprofit organiza-tions also work in this field.

The International Rescue Committee founded in 1933

at the request of Albert Einstein, delivers lifesaving care to people feeling conflict and natural disasters.

From the Pastor

This week summer begins! We celebrate the Summer Solstice on June 21 and most of us have certain plans for the summer. Beach. Vacations. Just doing nothing! Matt Emerson in America Magazine suggests that maybe this is the summer to use a little bit of our extra time to pur-sue the spiritual side. His article 10 tips for an Ignation

Summer suggests some things we might consider. Here

are a few:



Engage in spiritual direction. Emerson asks,

“If we took an x-ray of our souls, what would we find?” A spiritual director can help us take that x-ray. Here at the parish we offer Spiritual Direction. Call the parish office if you’d like more information.



Engage in spiritual reading.

IgnatianSpiritual-ity.com is sponsored by Loyola Press, and has

some suggestions of spiritual reading. Read the daily dotMagis blog posts or choose a new book. Our parish library has many to choose from.



Contemplate the heavens. A video is no

sub-stitute for going outside and contemplating God’s creation, but if you can’t get outside this moment, you might like the video Since Ignatius Liked to Look

Up at the Sky. Then plan some time to contemplate

creation first-hand.



Join the company of the marginalized. This

might be the time to pursue a new volunteer oppor-tunity or learn more about people on the margins. There are many opportunities in our area to volun-teer with the less fortunate. Family Promise will be with us once again at the end of July – why not plan to volunteer then.



Go on a pilgrimage. The next few months

might provide time for sacred travel, whether to an official pilgrimage destination or one of personal sig-nificance.

Having said all that, and perhaps before all that, give your summer to God. Emerson concludes:

“The opening line of Ignatius’s Suscipe reads, ‘Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess.’ Starting with your summer plans, give it back to God. Before you do anything else, ask God to take your liberty, your memory, your understanding and your will.”

COMING SOON

TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU!!

A Summer Film Series

Many remember “Catholicism,” a documentary from Bishop Robert Barron that took us around the world and deep into Catholic Faith.

The latest program from Word on Fire Catholic Missionaries is entitled “The Pivotal Players” Vol-ume One is a 6 part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artist, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but the course of civilization! This Ministry attempts to teach and reach us in the 21st century through con-temporary forms of media and innovative commu-nication technologies.

Two showings, one at 9AM and another at 7PM. Discussion afterward is optional, the date will fol-low.

Watch this space for updates as we approach the release of these films right here in Monmouth Beach!!

The Building and Grounds committee is sooo thankful to

all the folks who volunteered to help us keep our beds weedfree over the summer. Our new trees will hopefully thrive as a result of their care.

We do need about six more weeders to

complete the parking lot area if you are able, give us a call

and get a section for your family .

Thanks Again!!!.. Call the parish office 732-222-4756 and leave your name or send

an email to: [email protected]

TRUST IN JESUS

Today's feast celebrates another central mystery of our faith--the mystery of the Eucharist. Like the mystery of the Trinity, the real presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist can never be fully understood, but can only be believed. Just as the Israelites in the desert were invited to put their trust in God's word to them, we are invited to trust wholly in the word of Je-sus. In today's Gospel Jesus promises to give us a share in his very own flesh and blood, and a share in eternal life besides. We are called to take him at his word and open our hearts to receive true nourishment and life from our participation in the Eucharist

Women and Men’s Spirituality Groups

As a follow up to our Women’s and Men’s Retreats which happen each year and as a follow up to the retreats the women and men of the parish meet to “Continue the Conversation” – to continue the spirit of the retreat they have experienced. And so, on the third Saturday of each Month the Men’s Group meets at the Parish House at 8am and on the fourth Saturday of the Month the women meet at 8am. The gatherings are for one hour and are op-portunities to reflect on the scripture, to share where we are spiritually.

Of course, if you have not been on one of the retreats you are most welcome to join in the discussion.

The Days of prayer for the Novena: June 26 - July 4 July 24 - Aug 1 Aug 28 - Sept 5 Sept 25 - Oct 3 Oct 23 - Oct 31 ********************************************************* TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

At the heart of today's solemnity is a eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a pro-cession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Commun-ion, the procession through the streets, past homes and work-places, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide.

Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel pro-foundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. "Before our mind's eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present." Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from "Corpus Christi" to "The Body and Blood of Christ" and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light.
