THE
NATURE
OF
MINDREADING.

a few years ago thegeneral
public
wasin almost total
ignorance
of thegreat
truthof
Thought
Transference,
Thought
Pro-jection,Telepathy,
or MindReading.
It is truethat here and there were to be found a few scien-tists
earnestly
investigating
andeagerly
uncovering
the
hidden
truthsconcerning
thesubjects.
But themass of the
people
were eitherentirely
ignorant
ofthe
subject,
or else wereintensely skeptical
of anything concerning
the
matter,laughing
to scorn thedaring
thinkerwho
ventured to express his interestor belief in this
great
scientificphenomena.
But how different
to-day.
On all hands we hearof the wonders of
Thought
Transference,
or Tele-pathy,as it is called. Scientific men write and teach
of its
fascinating
manifestations,
and even the gen-eralpublic
has heard much of the new science andbelieves more or less in
it,
according
to thedegree
of
intelligence
andknowledge
concerning
thesubject
possessed
by
the individual. Listen to these words from thelips
of some of thegreatest
scientists of theday.
Prof.
WilliamJames,
the eminentinstructor
atadvanced
standpoint
we look back upon thepast
stages
of humanthought,
whether it be scientificthought
ortheological
thought,
we are amazed that a universe which appears to us of so vast and mys-teriousa
complication
should ever have seemed toanyone so little and
plain
athing.
Whether it beDescartes' world or
Newton's;
whether it be thatof the Materialists of the last
century,
or that of theBridgewater
treatises of our own, it isalways
thesame to us "
incredibly
perspectiveless
and short.Even
Lyell's, Faraday's,
Mill's and Darwin's con-sciousnessof their
respective subjects
arealready
be-ginning to put on an infantile and innocent look."These remarks are
doubly
significant
by
reason oftheir
having
been madeby
Prof.James
as the pres-identof the
"Society
forPsychical
Research."The eminent
English
scientist,
Sir WilliamCrookes,
in his address aspresident
of theRoyal
Society,
atBristol,
England,
a few years ago, said:"Were I now
introducing
for the first time theseinquiries
to the world ofscience,
I should choose astarting point
different from that ofold,
where weformerly
began.
It would be well tobegin
withtelepathy;
with the fundamentallaw,
as I believeit to
be,
thatthoughts
andimages
may be trans-ferredfrom one mind to another without the
agency of the
recognized

communicated in any hitherto known or
recognized
ways.
Although
theinquiry
has elicitedimportant
facts with reference to the
mind,
it has notyet
reached the scientific
stage
ofcertainty
which would enable it to beusefully
brought
before one of oursections. I will therefore confine
myself
topoint-
ing
out the direction in which scientificinvestigation

can
legitimately
advance. Iftelepathy
takeplace,
we have twophysical
facts " thephysical
change
inthe brain of A. the suggestor, and the
analogous
physical
change
in the brain of B. therecipient
of thesuggestion.
Between these twophysical
eventsthere must exist a train of
physical
causes..
When-ever the
connecting
sequence of intermediate causesbegins
to berevealed,
theinquiry
will then comewithin the range of one of the sections of the British
Association. Such a sequence can
only
occurthrough
anintervening
medium. All thephenom-
ena
of the Universe are
presumably
in some waycontinuous,
and it is unscientific to call in the aidof
mysterious
agencies
when with every fresh ad-vancein
knowledge,
it is shown that ether vibrations have powers and attributesabundantly
equal
toany demand " even the transmission of
thought."
Prof. Crookes then went on to say: "It is sup-posed
by
somephysiologists
that the essential cellsof nerves do not
actually
touch,
but areseparated
nar-rows almost to extinction
during
mentalactivity.
This condition is so
singularly
like that of aBranly
orLodge
coherer(a
device which has led Marconi to thediscovery
of wirelesstelegraphy)
as to sug-gesta further
analogy.
The structure of brain andnerve
being
similar,
it is conceivable that there maybe present masses of such nerve coherers in the
brain whose
special
function it may be to receiveimpulses
brought
from withoutthrough
the connect-ingsequence of ether waves of
appropriate
order ofmagnitude.
Roentgen
has familiarized us with anorder of vibrations of extreme minuteness
compared
with the smallest waves of which we have hithertobeen
acquainted,
and of dimensionscomparable
with the distances between the centers of the atomsof which the material universe is built up ; and there
is no reason for
believing
that we have here reachedthe limit of
frequency.
It is known that the action ofthought
isaccompanied
by
certain molecularmovements in the
brain,
and here we havephysical
vibrations
capable
from their extreme minutenessof
acting
direct upon individualmolecules,
while theirrapidity approaches
that of the internal and ex-ternalmovements of the atoms themselves."
A formidable range of
phenomena
must be sci-entificallysifted before we
effectually
grasp afaculty
so strange, so
bewildering,
and for ages so inscru-table,THE NATURE OF MIND READING
been said that
nothing
worth theproving
can beproved,
noryet
disproved.
True thismay have been
in the past, it is true no
longer.
The science of ourcentury
hasforged
weapons of observation andanalysis by
which the veriesttyro
may
profit.
Sci-encehas trained and fashioned the average mind
into habits of exactitude and
disciplined perception,
and in so
doing
has fortified itself for taskshigher,
wider and
incomparably
more wonderful than eventhe wisest
among our ancestors
imagined.
Likethe souls in Plato's
myth
that follow the chariot ofZeus,
it has ascended to apoint
of vision far abovethe earth. It is henceforth open to science to tran-scend
all we now think we know of matter, and to
gain
newglimpses
of aprofounder
scheme of Cos-micLaw. In old
Egyptian
days
a well-known in-scriptionwas carved over the
portal
of theTemple
of Isis : 'I am whatever has
been,
is,
or ever will be ;and my veil no man hath
yet
lifted/ Not thus domodern seekers after truth confront Nature " the
word that stands for the
baffling mysteries
of theUniverse.
Steadily,
unflinchingly,
we strive topierce
the inmost heart ofNature,
from what sheis,
to reconstruct what she has
been,
and toprophesy
what she yet shall be. Veil after veil we have
lifted,
and her face grows more
beautiful,
august and won-derfulwith every barrier that is withdrawn."
astron-omer, is a believer in
Thought
Transference andMind
Reading,
and has written thefollowing
ex-pressionof his convictions on this
subject:
"We sumup,
therefore,
ourpreceding
observationsby
the con-clusionthat one mind can act at a distance upon
another, without the habitual medium of
words,
orany other visible means of communication. It ap-pears to us
altogether
unreasonable toreject
thisconclusion if we accept the facts. There is
nothing
unscientific,
nothing
romantic,
inadmitting
that anidea can influence the brain from a distance. The
action of one human
being
uponanother,
from adistance is a scientific fact ; it is as certain as the ex-istence
of
Paris,
ofNapoleon,
ofOxygen,
or ofSirius." The same
authority
has also said "There can be no doubt that ourpsychical
force creates amovement of the
ether,
which transmits itself afarlike all movements of ether and becomes
perceptible
to brains in
harmony
with our own. The transfor-mationof a
psychic
action into an ethereal move-ment,and the reverse, may be
analogous
to whattakes
place
on atelephone,
where thereceptive
plate,
which is identical with theplate
at the otherend,
reconstructs the sonorous movement transmit-ted,not
by
means ofsound,
butby
electricity."
We have
quoted
atlength
from this eminentauthority
to show once and for all that thisgreat
ap-{

proved
ofby
thehighest
authorities on ModernScience,
and also togive
our students the benefitof the current scientific theories upon the
subject.
In this work we have but very little to say about
theory,
but shall confine ourselves tofacts,
andactual instruction.
Science knows and has proven that
thoughts
maybe and have been transmitted from one mind to
another,
in some cases over thousands of miles of space, but it has not as yet solved themystery
ofthe
"Why"
of thesubject,
and contents itself withexplaining
the "How." The nearestapproach
toa correct
theory
seems to be the one whichcom-pares the mind with the "wireless
telegraph,"
andwhich supposes that the vibrations of
thought
travelthrough
theether,
just
as do the waves of thishigh
order of
electricity.
The mind of oneperson acts
like a "transmitter" of the wireless
telegraph,
while the mind of the other acts as a "receiver" of the sameset of
instruments^
There are
undoubtedly
vibrations set up in thebrain when one
thinks,
and there areundoubtedly
waves of
thought
just
as there are waves of elec-tricity.Science informs us that there is an increase
of temperature in the human brain
during
periods
ofthought-activity,
and also that there are constantchemical
changes
in the structuregoing
on whengener-ation of electricity in a battery, and undoubtedly
acts in the same way in producing vibrations, and
transmitting them to the brain of another. Sir
William Crookes, in the address just quoted, points
out the direction of the scientific theories concern-ing
the matter. But, this is all that we shall have
to say about the theory of Mind Reading. We shall
now pass on to the actual practical instruction. The
student is asked, however, to always carry in his
mind the fact that Mind travels in waves from one
brain to another just as electricity travels from the
Transmitter to the Receiver. By holding this pic-ture in
your mind, you will have the whole practi-cal
theory, in condensed form, right before
you, so

THE PROOFS OF MIND READING.
S we have said in the
previous
chapter,

and it isscarcely
necessary to devotethe time and space to a
proof
of thereality
of thephenomena
in thesedays,
although
a few years ago a work on thesubject
would have had to be com-posedprincipally
of evidences andproofs.
But,
nevertheless,
it may be well for us to take ahasty
look at the nature of the
proof
in this work.f
Nearly
everyone has had evidences of Mind Read-ingor
Thought
Transference in his or her own life.Nearly
every one has hadexperiences
ofbeing
in aperson's
company when one of the two would makea remark and the
other,
somewhatstartled,
wouldexclaim,
"Why,
that'sjust
what I wasgoing
tosay,"
or words to that effect.Nearly
every one hashad
experiences
ofknowing
what a second person wasgoing
to say before the personspoke.
And,
likewise common is theexperience
ofthinking
of aperson a few moments before the person came into
sight.
Many
of us havesuddenly
found ourselvesthinking
of a person who had been out of our mindsper-son himself would appear. These instances are so
common as to be
generally
recognized,
without ques-tion.These occurrences have
given
rise to the twocommon
"sayings,"
viz.,
"Speak
of the devil and hisimps
appear,"
or"Speak
ofangels
and you hear therustle of their
wingSj/T
Mark
Twain,
in an articleprinted
several yearsago,
spoke
of aplan
that he hadfrequently
prac-ticed,i.e.,
that ofwriting
a leter to a person uponsome
subject,
thenaddressing
theenvelope
and in-sertingthe
letter,
and thentearing
the wholething
intopieces
instead ofsending
it. He stated that ina
large
percentage
of such cases he would receivewithin a short time a letter from the person to
whom the
destroyed
letter had beenaddressed,
an-sweringthe
questions
asked,
or elsespeaking
along
the same lines as those of the
destroyed
letter. Wehave known of this
experiment
being
tried on peo-plethousands of miles away from the
writer,
andalso in cases in which the other person had not been
heard of for many years. There is a field open for
experiment
along
these lines which some of ourstudents
might
investigate
withprofit
and satisfac-tion.Perhaps
the best available evidence of Mind Read-ingat the
disposal
of thepublic
to-day
is that found in the records of theEnglish
Society
forPsychical

Society
and otherinvestigators
have resulted in thepiling
up of a mass of facts more than sufficient tofully
establish the correctness of thetheory
of MindReading.
Series ofcarefully managed
experiments
have been
conducted,
the results of which have con-clusivelyproven that the
thought-waves
set intomotion
by
the mind of one person may be con-sciouslyreceived
by
the mind of another. We shallquote here from the reports of those
investigators,
in order to show you the
important
results that havebeen
obtained,
and to set at rest forever anylurking
doubts as to the
reality
of thephenomena
whichmay still find
lodgment
in your mind.Remember,
please,
that these committees werecomposed
of some of theleading
scientific authorities ofEng-
land
" men whose
standing
andreliability,
aswell
as whose
judgment,
wasbeyond
question.
Thesecases form a part of the scientific records of the
English
Society.
THE CREERY EXPERIMENTS.
One of the
interesting
series ofexperiments
con-ductedby
members of theEnglish
Society
was thatof the
family
of the Rev. A. M.Creery,
ofDerby-
shire,
England.
Thisinvestigation
was made uponhearing
the report of the Rev. Mr.Creery
regard-
ing
a number of
experiments
he had conducted withby practicing
a variation of what isgenerally
known as the"willing
game,"
in which one of theparty
leaves the room, and the company selects some ob-ject to be
hidden,
after which the person is recalledto the room when the company concentrates its mind
upon the hidden
object,
and the seekereventually
finds it
by
means of MindReading.
The reverendgentleman
said in his report to theSociety:
"We
began
by
selecting
thesimplest
objects
inthe room; then chose names of towns,
people,
dates,
cards out of a
pack,
lines from different poems, etc., anything
or series of ideas that those present couldkeep
before the mindsteadily.
The children sel-dommade a mistake. I have seen seventeen cards chosen
by
myself,
namedright
in succession with-outany mistake. We soon found that a
great
dealdepended
upon the steadiness with which the ideaswere
kept
before the minds of thethinkers,
andupon the energy with which
they
willed the ideas to pass. I may say that thisfaculty
is not confinedto the members of one
family
; it is much more gen-eralthan we
imagine.
Toverify
this conclusion Iinvited two of a
neighbor's
children tojoin
us in ourexperiment,
and very excellent results we se-curedfrom them."
The
Society
thenbegan
a series of careful inves-tigationsextending
over aperiod
of one year. TheOne of the
experiments
isreported
as follows :"One of the children was sent into an
adjoining
room, the door of which was closed. The com-mittee
then
thought
of someobject
in the house andwrote the name down on paper. The strictest silence
was observed. We then all
silently
thought
of thename of the
thing
selected. In a few seconds thedoor of the
adjoining
roomopened,
and the childwould appear
generally
with theobject
selected.No one was allowed to leave the room after the
object
had been fixed upon ; no communication withthe child was
conceivable,
as herplace
was oftenchanged.
Further,
theonly
instructionsgiven
tothe child were to fetch some
object
in the house thatwe would fix upon and would
keep
in mind to theexclusion of all other ideas. In this way we wrote
down,
among otherthings,
a hairbrush " it wasbrought;
an orange " it wasbrought;
awine-glass
" it was
brought;
anapple
" it wasbrought,"
etc.,etc.
The
report
to theSociety
sums up thefollowing
results: Three hundred and
eighty-two
trials weremade in the series. In the test of
naming
thechosen letters of the
alphabet,
cards,
and numbers of twofigures,
the chancesagainst
thegirl
were 21 to i, 51 to 1, and89
to 1,respectively.
In thecase of
stating
chosen surnames the oddsagainst

named. In the cases of the
experiments
ofnaming
chosen cards it was calculated that a mere
"guesser,"
according
to the law ofprobability,
would be ableto
correctly
name but seven and one-third out of atotal of the three hundred and
eighty-two
trials.The actual results obtained
by
the child were asfollows: On the first
attempt,
one hundred andtwenty-seven ; on the second
attempt,
fifty-six
ad-ditional;and on the third
attempt,
nineteen addi-tional"
making
agrand
total of two hundredand two successes out of a
possible
three hun-dredand
eighty-two!
On one occasion five cardsstraight running
weresuccessfully
named on a firsttrial. The mathematical chances of a mere
"guess"
doing
thisfeat,
under the Law ofAverage,
or Proba-bilities,are estimated at over a million to one
against
the chartce. And this was notmerely
anisolated,
exceptional
case, for there were other"long
runs";
forinstance,
there were two cases in whichruns of
eight
straight
consecutive successes werescored,
once with names, and once with cards. Inthe case of the
eight
consecutive cards it has beenfigured
that the chancesagainst
thegirl
wouldfigure
up at least 140,000,000 to 1,according
to the Law ofAverage
and Probabilities. To understandjust
what this means it may
help
you if you will thinkthat the feat was like
picking
out one chosen mannearly
double thepopulation
of the United States. Andyet
there arepeople
who would dismiss mat-terslike this with the
remark,
"mere coincidence"! The interest in theCreery
children attracted the notice of Prof. BalfourStewart,
LL.D.,
and Fellowof the
Royal
Society.
Thisdistinguished
gentleman
testifies as follows:"In the first
instance,
when I was present, thethought-reader
was outside a door. Theobject
orthing
thought
of was written on paper andsilently
handed to the company in the room. The
thought-reader was then called
in,
and in the course of per-haps a minute the answer wasgiven.
Definite ob-jectsin the room, for
instance,
were firstthought
of,
and in the
majority
of cases the answers were cor-rect.These numbers were
thought
of and the an-swers weregenerally
right,
but,
of course, there weresome cases of error. The names of towns were
thought
of,
and agood
many of these wereright.
Then
fancy
names werethought
of. I was asked tothink of certain
fancy
names and mark them downand hand them around to the company. I then
thought
of,
and wrote on paper,'Bluebeard,'
'TomThumb,'
'Cinderella/
and the answers were allcorrect."
Subsequent
experiments
with theCreery
children,
at the house of the well known
investigator,

equally
successful. Thechildren,
and their ages,were as follows:

15;Maud,
13.The percentage of successes obtained at Mr.
Myers*
house tallied very well with those obtained else-where.
One remarkable result was
obtained,
though,
that had not been obtained before. On one occasion
the child was asked to name the "suit" of cards
chosen one after another. That
is,
of course, thechild was asked to name which
suit,
"hearts,"
"dia-monds,""clubs" or
"spades,"
were shown of thecard drawn and seen
by
thecommittee,
and thenthought
of. On this occasion the child scored arun of fourteen
straight
running,
consecutive suc-cesses.The chances
against
this success were4,782,969
to 1.We will close
by
mentioning
another remarkableseries of
experiments
conductedby
the same So-ciety.The Mind Reader was M. G. A.
Smith,
ofEngland.
Among
otherstartling
featssuccessfully
performed
by
Mr.Smith,
that of thereproduction
of Geometrical
Figures
wasperhaps
the most re-markable.In this feat Mr. Smith sat
blindfolded,
in a room
belonging
to thecommittee,
with apad
of paper before him and a member of the committee
on each side of him. A selected member of the com-mittee
then would go outside of the room, and be-hind
a closed door would draw some
geometrical
would be shown to the
commitee,
and also to Mr.Douglas
Blackburn,
who acted as the Transmitterfor Mr.
Smith,
the latterbeing
known as the Re-ceiver.The
Transmitter,
with closed eyes, nowtook his
position immediately
back of Mr.Smith,
but at a distance of two feet from
him,
no contactbeing
allowed,
thisprecaution
being
taken to obvi-atecharges
ofconfederacy,
etc. The Transmitterwould then concentrate his mind
intently
for a fewminutes,
and in a short time Mr. Smith would re-ceivethe
impression
of the mentalimage
in the mindof the
Transmitter,
and wouldbegin
toattempt
toreproduce
it on paper. In the series ofexperiments
running
over aperiod
of fourdays
thirty-seven
drawings
weremade,
of whichonly
eight
were con-sideredunsuccessful.
Twenty-nine
successes out ofa
possible
thirty-seven,
remember.The committee reports that it took all the precau-tion
to
guard
against
secretsignals,
etc., and thatconfederacy,
fraud,
collusion,
or similar methods were out of thequestion.
Theeight
cases of failureconsisted of four cases in which Mr. Smith received
no
impression,
and therefore could notreproduce
thedrawing;
and four cases in which thedrawing
was so vague andimperfect
as to be called a total fail-ure.Some of the
figures
were grotesque,unusual,
and
complicated,
but all werereproduced
in a moreTHE PROOFS OF MIND READING 23
deliberately
and without hesitation, and as if Smith hadactually
seen thefigure
shown to the Transmittera few moments before. On one occasion, in order
to be
doubly
guarded
against
collusion,they
closed Mr. Smith's ears with putty, tied abandage
aroundhis
eyes and ears,
pulled
a bolster-case over hishead, and then covered him all over with a blanket
which
completely
enveloped
hisbody
and head.And under these
extraordinary
conditions herepro-duced the
figures
with his usual success.We could
proceed
relating
case after case,experi-
ment
after
experiment,
conductedby
these scientific bodies of learned and careful men. But the story would be no moreconvincing
than that relatedabove. And, after all, there is a method of
satisfy-
ing
yourself
that is far more conclusive than thereading
ofany results of
experiments
of others " andthat is to learn to
perform
the feats of Mind Read-ingyourself.
By
means of a very littlepractice
youwill be able to
reproduce
many of the demonstra-tionsof the
public
performers,
as well as theexperi-
ments
of the scientific societies, and then when
you have realized that
you can do these
things
you will need no furtherproof
of thereality
of the science ofLESSON
III.
"CONTACT" MIND READING.
MIND
Reading
is dividedby
the authorities intotwo
general
classes,
viz.,
"Contact" Mind" '
Reading
and"Telepathic"
MindReading.
The first of these
classes,
"Contact" Mind Read-ing, is demonstratedby
physical
contact betweenthe Transmitter
(or
activeagent)
and the Receiver(or
passiveagent)
in order to afford an easy chan-nelfor tne passage of the
vibrations,
thought-waves,
nerve-currents, or
magnetism
of the Transmitter(according
to the several theories favoredby
sci-entists).The second
class,
"Telepathic"
Mind Read-ing,is demonstrated
by
the transferral of the"waves,"
"vibrations,"
"currents,"
or"magnetism"
of the Transmitter to the Receiver over the
ether,
through
space(often
for thousands ofmiles)
with-outthe more convenient "wires" of the nerves of
the two
agents.
You will
readily
see that two classes ofphenom-
ena
closely
resemble the two classes oftelegraphic
phenomena,
i.e.,
the "wire"system

The truth is that the muscles have
nothing
to dowith the passage of the mental currents or waves

consistsin the person
breathing
in slow measuredregular
rhythm.
It may beacquired

counting
the in-drawnbreath,
the retainedbreath,

beats like theticking

draw in your breathslowly,
counting
mentally
according
to theticking

Begin

and start each demonstration withit,
also. You will find that it will have a very sooth-ing,calming,

in each a mental earnestness and con-centrationthat will

practice

The
prime
requisite
for a successful demonstra^tion of Mind
Reading
is theacquirement,
or pos-session,by
theTransmitter,
of a clear idea of direc-tionin his mind. The associated
requisite
is that theTransmitter be able to concentrate his will upon the
mind of the
Receiver,
impressing
upon him the Sense of Direction sostrongly

you be blind-folded,for

you induce a Passive stateof
mind,
and even the strayglimpses
that you maycatch

the handkerchief will serveonly
todistract you. You must shut out
sights,
and eventhought

Stand
quiet
a moment or two,awaiting

sions
from the mind of the
Transmitter,

say !" while at the same time he is
