11CP – ESLR (2018 - 2019)

Refer to the ESLR calendar in the resource file for your due dates.

DAY ONE:

1. You can look in Resources/11CP ESLR/11CP ESLR Calendar –to see all tentative due dates and point values.

2. NO LATE WORK is accepted and you can’t recover points you lose. If you must be absent, you must meet deadline by the bell on due date to receive points. You can send it electronically to my e-mail [email protected] OR have someone drop a hard copy to me by the bell.

You may turn in work early.

3. Peer Support Contract - at the end of the unit, you will be awarded a possible 30 total points for ongoing cooperation during this unit. If you are off task or take away from others’ assistance, you will lose points from this total of 30. If you are distracting repeatedly, you may be removed from the lab. Help support everyone and stay on task!

4. Each required step will come with specific directions and models. Please pay attention and follow directions to earn maximum points. Be proactive if you get lost or need clarification. I am happy to assist during lunch so make an appointment.

Step One

Annotated Bibliography (50 pts.) – follow format directions (See Writing/Sample Annotated Bibliography)

Minimum requirements of your annotated bib:

ALL ANNOTATIONS ARE QUOTES, FOLLOWED BY CITATION, FOLLOWED BY TERMS IF

APPLICABLE, FOLLOWED BY NOTE Significant points off for annotations that are incomplete.

1. Author’s Bio – min. 10 total annotations from as many sources as necessary (yes, one works) Where do I find this source? Use the library database – often the biography of an author is in the database called Gale Virtual Reference Library, Bloom’s Literature, or Biography in Context Database (access information is on the main menu page).

2. Time period – min. of 10 total annotations from as many sources as necessary (yes, one works) Where do I find this source? Any of the above sources may provide the time period research but you may also find it in the database called U.S. History in context.

3. Novel – min. of 30 annotations - When creating these annotations, take time to cite and add notes in all caps after each one. This will later help you identify your thesis and allows me to guide you should you need the help.

4. Literary Criticism (Lit. Crit. #1) – Between both the Lit. Crit. #1 and Lit. Crit. #2 sources you

need a total of 10 annotations

- Where do I find this source? Note that you need two of these (see next

requirement). Use the library database – Novels for Students (pay attention to how to access this), Gale Virtual Reference Library and Bloom’s Literature (access information is on the main menu page).

- What exactly am I looking for to pull from literary criticisms? Pay attention as I show you to template of the final paper, the order of your research and how to make sure you use all sources in the paper. (Hint: try to pull information that supports what you found when annotating the novel and/or the author’s life and/or the time period. MAKE SURE YOU CITE THESE REFERENCE AND ADD NOTES IN ALL CAPS.

THESE ARE THE TRICKY ONES TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE CITING CORRECTLY.

5. Literary Criticism (Lit. Crit. #2) - Between both the Lit. Crit. #1 and Lit. Crit. #2 sources you need a total of 10 annotations – SEE #4 ABOVE

Step Two

Looking for your thesis.

Now that you have completed the research and met the requirements of the annotated bibliography, you are ready to create a thesis. Pay attention to reoccurring themes in the research. You need to rely on the thesis creator

handout. Locate the WHO? WHY? HOW. Keep in mind your task with this paper is to use the research to prove the thesis. You must get your thesis approved before you tackle the next step. Once approved, type your thesis at the top of your next step.

Step Three Type your approved thesis first.

Follow the class directions to categorizing your Annotated Bib. You will need to

highlight sections as they relate to one another. Cut and paste the categories to

make the revised Annotated Bib reflect the order you plan to present the research

in the outline. Any leftover quotes you have, create a miscellaneous category at

the end.

Step Four

Make sure you have enough research to effectively prove your thesis. If not, time to go back to the database and collect what you need to prove your thesis. If you decide to change your thesis, get approval.

STOP and go for the A!

1. Insert lit terms where they apply

2. Apply signal phrase list words to present your research integrating your own writing around the most critical part of each entry you plan to use.

3. Get rid of dead words!

4. Take the original NOTES you added in all caps and pull out your TONE WORD list. Make your commentary address the thesis and apply effective

vocabulary!

5. Keep your Miscellaneous category for now.

6. Look at the final, categorized new annotated bib. Make sure it supports the thesis.

7. After you present the research you plan to use on the author and time, decide which section is second best and weakest and best. Cut and paste sections to in this order. Keep your Miscellaneous category at the end.

8. Your new, revised annotated bib should now be in order for the template of the paper. STOP AND TAKE TIME NOW TO ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING:

- Are my citations MLA, 8

- Does the research prove the approved thesis?

- Do I have the most effective research placed in the right area?

- Is my word choice reflective of literary terms and academic register?

Step Five 1. Type your approved thesis at the top.

2. Using the Yellow Template for the Outline, type up a formatted outline

and fill in every area where you know you will use your research. Your

Intro and Conclusion sections will be blank for now but type in the template for those sections. Format the outline to follow the Template.

3. Include citations.

4. Include NOTES but now think of them as Commentary. You need two commentaries per cited research and it needs to address why the research ties to the thesis!

5. Keep your Miscellaneous category at the end of the outline and don’t worry about formatting this part. Just list the research you have yet to find a place for but make sure these entries include citations.

6. Edit your Outline carefully, save it and print it or be ready for access by the bell. Preliminary Outline is due (50 pts): ___________

Step Six

1. On your outline, insert appropriate transition words (see Transition Word List).

2. On your outline, carefully make sure you have included appropriate formatting for [sic]. adding text, block quote rule, ellipses. (See Writing folder on website). Use Block quotes sparingly!!!!

3. Take time to assess your entries and make sure word choice reflects academic register (remember the thesaurus trick but don’t use words no one has ever heard of).

4. Revise and save this new outline.

Step Seven

1. Pay close attention to Introduction and Conclusion Section requirements.

Fill in entries in the order the template dictates. Keep in mind that there may be an entry in your Miscellaneous section of the outline that works well in either the Intro or Conclusion sections. Be careful though not to bring up new, unrelated points!

2. Once you fill in the Introduction and Conclusion Outline sections, take time to check your vocabulary, citation if applicable, and effectiveness of each entry in these sections as they compare to the Template directions.

3. Save this new complete outline.

4. Return to your Conclusion section and use the backwards trick to find an effective, original title for your paper. Insert it at the top of this final outline. Save.

5. Go to website/ESLR file/ESLR Edit form for Outline – FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND ASK A TRUSTED EDITIOR TO ALSO LOOK AT YOUR WORK. Save the revised Final Outline - print a hard copy or have it ready for access to be checked. This is due (30 pts): __________

Step Eight

1. Follow direction on edit day for your Outline. Take this seriously because this is when you can avoid losing careless points.

2. Whatever you walk out with today, go home and revise, save and print.

This is the step I HIGHLY recommend printing.

Check for accuracy in the format. Use the most common error guide provided in class.

Step Nine

1. Check in your Works Cited and make sure it is accurate! Fix it tonight if there are ANY errors (see most common error list).

2. Preliminary Rough Draft needs to be MLA formatted and include all thirteen paragraphs reflecting instruction. Edit. Save. Print. This is the step I HIGHLY recommend printing.

3. Preliminary Rough Draft hard copy or ready to access by the bell (45 pts) is due: ____________

Step Ten

1. Edit Day – It is important to carefully select your editors. There will be

forms to follow for editing the format, the mechanics (infractions), the

style. Follow directions on edit day and make sure you are clear on any

corrections one of your editors has made on your hard copy. Ultimately,

you decide if the correction needs attention. These edit forms reflect the

rubric that will be used to assess your Final paper. If you have a trusted

editor outside the classroom, you can find the rubric in

Resource/ESLR/Rubric. TRY TO GIVE YOURSELF AT LEAST A DAY AWAY FROM YOUR PAPER BEFORE YOU FINALIZE IT. FRESH EYES ALLOW YOU TO POSSIBLY SEE SOMETHING YOU MAY OTHERWISE MISS FOR CORRECTION.

2. Almost there… homestretch now…

3. Save your Final Paper. Turnitin.com is required for this final paper. Your class i.d. and password can be found on the main page of your class website. There will be an automatic 10 pt. penalty for each day you are late submitting your Final paper.

4. Print (electronic copy is NOT an option for this final step) a hard copy to turn in on the due date (100 pts): __________

Step Eleven 1. Arrive on the due date with your hard copy.

2. Be prepared to complete a self-assessment before you turn it in.

Directions will be provided and self-eval will in NO WAY affect the assessment.
