Dear parents, guardians and students

As Nambour Christian College has moved to a supported learning at home environment, all teaching and learning will occur in a different way. To do this effectively, we acknowledge that it will require a strong commitment from students, staff and parents, and together we can make this work well. We value our collective relationship with you and look forward to this new opportunity before us.

The challenges of 2020 forced us into the space and these guidelines were produced to support our students and parents. We have revised these to be reflective of the necessary changes to better support you at this time. Whilst not a lot has needed to change, we ask that you take the time to read through this booklet, as they will apply to any ‘at home schooling’ that may happen this year.

Once again we acknowledge our hard working teachers who will continue to work hard in providing the very best lessons they can. Their efforts are to be commended because without them, this would not be possible.

Please do not hesitate to make contact with the relevant Head of School for any reason throughout this time.

Kind regards

Brad Elliott Chris Spencer

MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL TIMETABLE

Teachers and students are to follow their current timetable for ALL lessons - see below for bell times (lesson start times). During each of these lessons, teachers will communicate with parents and students what will be happening. When anything changes from this, teachers will endeavour to communicate this directly to you where possible.

Due to the nature of various online platforms and delivery of lessons, student attendance will be recorded for any lessons that require video conferencing eg Zoom. It is understood that for all lessons not requiring video conferencing, student attendance will not be recorded.

Please remember to inform the school each morning, using the absentee line, where your child will not be in attendance for any of these lessons.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR LESSON PARTICIPATION AND TIME MANAGEMENT

• As you are already aware, your teachers may use a variety of online platforms. Some of these will include: emails, OneNote, Canvas, Zoom, etc. Please inform your teacher if you experience any difficulties while the lesson is on.

• It is important to understand that teachers may not communicate with you before 8.30am and after 3.30pm each day. Good time management is critical to help you organise your day and week. Please allow enough time for your teachers to communicate with you in a timely manner, especially when assessment is due.

• You are required to wear appropriate clothing as per our uniform policy. This can include wearing the school uniform - the sport uniform will be fine.

• Locate your device within your learning environment and ensure that you have a backdrop that is appropriate. Be mindful of this at ALL times.

• If your teacher is unwell, this will be communicated directly to you via email from your usual teacher for that lesson in advance. When this happens, clear instructions will also be given to you in that same email as to what you will be required to do for that lesson. If there is a prolonged absence, the school will email any students affected to explain an alternative plan.

• Teachers will email parents directly in the event of any misbehaviour, students not completing work, students not participating in lessons when required and a failure to submit any assessment.

PREPARATION

The staff of the Nambour Christian College Middle and Senior School will communicate with your child and provide learning activities for them to do at home. Please note that normal communication methods such as the College website, weekly emails and other online tools like the Parent Portal will also continue to be used. How can you help? Just as you always do, continue to love and support your child.

We encourage parents to:

• Read through this plan with your child; • Establish routines and expectations; • Define a space for your child to work in; • Monitor communication from teachers; • Encourage physical activity and/or exercise;

• Check in with your child throughout the day and remember that their child’s teacher and others will be available to help;

• Keep your child connected, whilst practising ‘social distancing’; however, reinforce your rules around their social media interactions;

• Familiarise yourself with your child’s new timetable. For your information the timetable structure is outlined in the “For Students” section of this document.

ATTENDANCE RECORDING

There are a number of complexities around marking rolls. Following the Middle and Senior School Timetable as stated earlier for students, it is expected that all students will be ‘present’ for all their lessons and parents should let the school know of any absences using the normal processes 07 54513398. Teachers will have ‘check-points’ in place to validate attendance during this time.

ORGANISING AN APPROPRIATE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Try to create a quiet and comfortable learning space that is conducive to this mode of learning. Your child may have a regular place for doing homework under normal circumstances, but this space may not be suitable for working in for an extended period.

A space/location for learning should be a public/family space, not in a bedroom. It should be a place that is mostly quiet and has a strong wireless internet signal.

TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Teachers may be communicating with your child during this period using video chat applications such as Zoom, while also using Canvas or OneNote. In addition, they will definitely be using the school email.

It is important for you and your child to remember that teachers will be available to offer support and guidance during school hours (8.30am-3.30pm).

We have asked students to collect all their questions into one email for a particular teacher, rather than send a separate email for each question. Where needed please help your child to construct this email. Please allow at least 24 hours for a response.

PASTORAL CARE AND YEAR LEVEL CO-ORDINATORS

Please do not hesitate to communicate with NCC staff if you have any concerns regarding the wellbeing of your child. Please follow usual processes in contacting the relevant Year Level Co-ordinator for all pastoral care related issues. They in turn will inform their Head of School and follow normal processes where required. This may involve informing Mr Hadley, Director of Student Wellbeing if required. Key personnel that are accessible include:

Samantha English Year 7 ([email protected]); Aaron Ford Year 7 ([email protected]);

Kate Zischke Year 8 ([email protected]); Trevor Weeks Year 9 ([email protected]); Tim Lanham Year 10 ([email protected]); Matthew Power Year 11 ([email protected]); Dalton Schloss Year 12 ([email protected]);

Loida Grinan Deputy Head of Senior School ([email protected]); Nico Prinsloo Deputy Head of Middle School ([email protected]); David Hadley Director of Student Wellbeing ([email protected]).
