Bring Your Own Device

Windaroo Valley State High School

Student BYOD Charter

(2)

Windaroo  Valley  State  High  School  supports  the  appropriate  use  of  BYOD’s  in  learning.    When  used  well,  BYOD’s   have  the  potential  to  aid  learning  and  assist  students  in  managing  their  schedules.

The  term  “BYOD”  refers  to  digital  technology  devices  such  as  iPads,  tablets  and  laptops  that  are  to  be  used   in  class  as  a  learning  device.    Laptops  in  the  1:1  Laptop  Program  are  covered  under  a  different  section.

Students  may  use  BYOD’s  in  our  school-‐learning  environment,  providing  they  use  these  devices  in  accordance   with  this  policy.    Failure  to  comply  with  this  policy  will  result  in  the  withdrawal  of  permission  to  use  BYOD’s  at   school.

Accessing  the  Internet  and  the  school’s  wireless  network

BYOD’s  may  be  used  at  school  by  students  to  access  the  Internet  via  the  school’s  wireless  network.    Other   connections  including  3G  and  4G  are  not  to  be  used  at  school.    Accessing  the  Internet  independently  of  the   school’s  proxy  servers  (i.e.  personal  ISP)  is  not  allowed.  This  is  to  ensure  cyber  safety  is  maintained  in  the  school   environment.

The  school  will  provide  information  regarding  connecting  your  BYOD  to  the  school  Internet  and  email.    The  school   will  provide  limited  technical  support  for  BYOD.    This  is  detailed  below.

Responsibility

1. The  use  of  BYOD’s  in  the  learning  program  will  be  under  the  direction  and  supervision  of  the  class   teacher,  will  be  for  the  purpose  of  enhancing  purposeful  and  planned  learning  experiences.

2. The  school  accepts  no  responsibility  for  damage,  loss  or  security  of  personal  property  including  BYOD’s.

3. Students  who  bring  BYOD’s  to  school  are  responsible  for  the  safe  keeping  of  their  devices  and  must  follow   the  information  technology  acceptable  use  agreement  (page  28  of  parents’  handbook)

4. The  decision  to  provide  a  BYOD  for  use  at  school  should  be  made  by  parents  or  guardians.

5. The  school’s  Internet  facilities  are  not  to  be  used  to  download  non-‐learning  related  audio/video  files,   programs  and  content.

6. BYOD’s  are  to  be  charged  at  home  and  be  ready  for  use  at  the  beginning  of  each  school  day.    The  school   does  not  have  any  charging  facilities.

7. Students  are  responsible  for  backing  their  own  devices.    The  school  does  not  provide  backup  for  personal   devices.

8. Technical  support  limited  to  advice  on  connecting  the  device  to  the  wireless  network.    Software   installation,  if  install  disc  and  proof  licence  agreement  are  supplied.    Hardware  failures  will  need  to  be   taken  to  the  vendor.

(3)

Security  and  Acceptable  Use  Conditions

1. A  hard  carry  case/bag  is  to  be  used  to  protect  your  BYOD  when  travelling  to  and  from  school  and  around   the  school.

2. All  BYOD  users  should  not  use  their  devices  in  any  manner  or  place  that  is  disruptive  to  the  normal   routine  of  the  school.
