APPLIED STUDIES DEGREES
BA in LIBERAL STUDIES DEGREE
In the words of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, “liberal education is a philosophy of education that empowers individuals, liberates the mind from ignorance and cultivates social responsibility.”
BA in Liberal Studies students may select a specialized major or minor area of concentration in Addiction Studies, Business and Social Entrepreneurship, Child Studies, Creative Writing, Liberal Studies, Psychology, Queer Studies, and Urban Community and Environment. In some cases, a student may design an individualized area of concentration tailored to specific interests and academic preparation.
APPLIED STUDIES and
LIBERAL STUDIES DEGREES
—
Which is right for you?
AULA’s Applied Studies programs recognize your technical and vocational skills in a specific area—such as auto mechanics, sound editing or culinary arts—and allow you to transfer in your coursework and experience as units toward your degree. This is a key difference between Applied Studies and Liberal Studies, which does not accept technical and vocational units for transfer.
As a student seeking an Applied Studies degree, you will have a specific professional area of focus that unifies your previous training and work experience with your program of study at Antioch University. Development of critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills is directly linked to your major discipline. All of AULA’s undergraduate degrees use an interdisciplinary approach toward learning and emphasize critical thinking, creative problem solving, awareness of multiple perspectives, social and intercultural awareness, civic and community engagement, and an ability to connect learning to one’s lived experience.
As a Liberal Studies student you can transfer in units from a wide range of general education subjects without needing to follow a standard pattern of requirements. At AULA you can choose an area of concentration and focus your studies with relevant coursework and internship opportunities.
This degree is designed for people with technical skills in art, design and media-focused fields such as makeup design, film editing, and set design, who want to more fully understand the context and business side of their industry.
Students in this program acquire strategies and training to amplify their creativity to start a business of their own, advance in their current organization, or discover innovative ways to create new opportunities through forward-thinking courses such as:
• Performance Art
• Art, Recycling, and Consumption • Portfolio Development
• Principles of Marketing • Interpersonal Communications • Social Media Marketing • Participatory Media

Bachelor of Applied Arts in
Urban Communities and Justice
The next step for people with training in law enforcement, criminal justice, public safety or paralegal skills is often helping communities advance and evolve. AULA’s Applied Arts degree in Urban Communities and Justice explores how oppression, privilege, discrimination, and social and economic disadvantage impact the justice system, and helps students to develop leadership strategies to work on social issues within a professional context.
Organizations require leaders who understand the complex connections between community, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic issues. They need future workers who can help bring these issues forward in honest, responsible and meaningful ways, through methods and training in:

Workplace

Independent study affords students the opportunity to pursue subjects not offered in our scheduled classes and to explore topics in depth under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
Successful college graduates need critical thinking, analytical skills, a broad base of world knowledge, and the ability to integrate their knowledge to real-world problems. These are the useful, practical outcomes of a liberal education. They’re more critical today than ever before, considering projected workforce demands and the need for citizens who can contribute effectively to both local and worldwide communities.
The BA curriculum and courses cultivate these values with a focus on the following learning objectives:
• Critical and analytical thinking • Understanding issues from multiple
perspectives
• Connecting learning to life experience • Social and intercultural awareness • Civic and community engagement • Foundational skills including writing,
quantitative reasoning, information literacy, technological literacy, oral communication, and research
Students in the BA in Liberal Studies program can select a specialized major and/or minor area of concentration, or design an individualized concentration if interested in other fields.
BA in Liberal Studies
AULA underlines for me how
education impacts all areas of my life, not just one specific field of thought or study. This is by far the furthest-reaching, most fully encompassing education that I find I am making. I am taking this ship of learning by the wheel, and the school is supporting me in this journey.

ADDICTION STUDIES
This curriculum fulfills the educational requirements necessary for credentialing as a certified addiction treatment counselor in the state of California. Addiction Studies students learn to de-pathologize individuals struggling with addiction (and its co-occurring disorders), and to provide an in-depth understanding of the impact of diverse addictions on the individual, family, and community. Students learn to become advocates for healing and transformation, employing prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies that utilize the client’s own strengths.
CREATIVE WRITING
Explore the impact of writing in the world, navigate literature’s past and present, and dive into literary life in Los Angeles as readers and writers. At AULA, literature becomes interactive— an avenue for critical dialogue, reflection, and invention. Our exploration of writing extends beyond the classroom. Students earn credit as editors of AULA’s online literary journal and as mentors for emerging writers who have not previously enjoyed access to education. In these ways, our students explore the dynamic between reader and writer, between what happens on the page and what happens in our communities, while gaining real-world experience that prepares students for the workplace as well as for graduate study.
BUSINESS & SOCIAL
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
This concentration provides not only the fundamentals of knowledge for graduate study and a career path in business management, but also addresses social entrepreneurship, or forprofit enterprises that pursue a social mission. Interdisciplinary coursework in philosophy, psychology, and political theory is integrated with the theory and practice of socially responsible business management, making the curriculum relevant for traditional and social entrepreneurs, as well as for managers in small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
LIBERAL STUDIES
The Liberal Studies concentration offers the broadest education across all domains of knowledge, allowing the greatest flexibility in shaping a program of study. It is ideal for students who want a strong general foundation across disciplines, as well as for those who are interested in exploring with subjects within their personal passions. Unlike the specialized concentrations, there is no structured core curriculum for the Liberal Studies concentration. Students who do not declare a specialized major area of concentration are automatically included in the Liberal Studies area of concentration.
* Students who declare a specialized major must complete 40 or more units in that area of concentration.

PSYCHOLOGY
Our dynamic curriculum educates students in the foundationsof the field of psychology, as well as specialized subjects such as industrial/organizational psychology, substance abuse treatment, gay and lesbian identity development, postmodern approaches to counseling, and community psychology, among others. The courses and internships prepare students for careers in related fields such as child advocacy, nonprofit work, community organizing, teaching, and social work.
URBAN COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT
Unlike more traditional urban policy or planning programs, students explore the dynamic interplay among the diverse forces that shape the urban setting: the arts, ecology, and environment; the sociopolitical and economic infrastructure; and the people who make up our urban world. The goal is to equip students with practical strategies to become socially conscious leaders working for social justice and equality. We prepare our students for careers in public service, nonprofit organizations, and teaching, as well as for graduate study in urban planning, history, American studies, public policy, and the law.
QUEER STUDIES
(Minor Concentration)
The Queer Studies concentration combines a range of interdisciplinary courses and independent studies with opportunities for internships at pioneering community-based organizations. Courses include Queer History of Los Angeles, LGBT Identity Issues, Queer Cinema, LGBT Counseling: Postmodern Skills and Collaboration, Queer Literature, Gay and Lesbian History in Documentary Film, and Queer Theory.

With an emphasis on the social conditions that shape children’s lives, the curriculum blends clinical and developmental psychology with physiology, neurology, sociology, philosophy, economics, social policy, and the law.
* Students who declare a specialized minor must complete 20 or more units in that area of concentration.

UNIQUE LEARNING FORMATS
One of the most unique features of an AULA undergraduate degree is the expectation that you will engage in significant learning outside of the classroom.
•
INTERNSHIPS
Internships focus on real world flexible learning at either community organizations where you may network and find career opportunities, or at your own current job, where some of your work hours may be eligible for internship units.
• PRIOR LEARNING
Many of your past professional, vocational, and/or personal experiences are eligible for up to 44 units (22 upper division and 22 lower division) by demonstrating the evidence of your learning. This transfer of real-world experience to course credit can dramatically reduce tuition cost and degree completion time.
• SELF-DIRECTED INDEPENDENT STUDY
If eligible, you may propose upper and/or lower division level topics to explore and receive credit upon satisfactory demonstration of learning and self-reflection on the topic as assessed by an AULA approved content specialist.
• LEARNING ASSESSMENT
Our instructors evaluate your learning with narratives that address your strengths and challenges in meeting the program and course objectives.
Students demonstrate their learning not with exams and quizzes, but with reflective essays, reading journals, collaborative projects, research papers and oral presentations, and even works of art.
