HR professionals with existing generalist certifications (PHR®, SPHR®, GPHR®, HRMP®, HRBP®, and other recognized HR generalist certifications*) will be eligible for the new SHRM certification on January 1, 2015 by taking an online tutorial.
All HR professionals seeking certification for the first time can apply for the exam beginning January 1, 2015. The first exam window of the new certification is tentatively scheduled for May 2015.
*PHR, SPHR, GPHR, HRMP and HRBP are registered trademarks of the HR Certification Institute and are not SHRM certifications.

Beginning January 1, 2015, if you are certified with existing HR generalist credentials, and are in good standing, you are eligible for SHRM’s new certification – at no cost – by
completing the following by December 31, 2015:
o Document that your current certification is in good
standing;
o Sign the SHRM Code of Ethics;
o Complete a brief online tutorial on HR competencies.

If you pass your PHR, SPHR, GPHR, HRMP, HRBP exam, between now and January 31, 2015, you will be eligible to receive the new SHRM credential – at no cost – from January 1-December 31, 2015 by:
o Document that your current certification is in good
standing;
o Sign the SHRM Code of Ethics;
o Complete a brief online tutorial on HR competencies.
Once you go through this process, you will receive the new SHRM credential and will begin a three-year recertification cycle.
If you do not pass your exam prior to January 2015 and you purchased the current SHRM Learning System, we will
provide the new SHRM Learning System for the new SHRM certification free of charge in preparation for the new

CONSIDERING CERTIFICATION IN 2015
The new SHRM certification preparation materials (Learning System) will be available December 1, 2014, for self-study.
SHRM seminars and education partner programs will begin January 2015.
You will take the new SHRM certification exam that will be open for registration January 1, 2015. The exam will be between 2-3 hours.

development of our new competency-based
certification – an investment that is leading to the
development of a more valuable certification for our
members.
We recognize that you have invested a great deal of
time, money and energy in to obtaining your
credentials. The value of certification for an HR
professional’s career cannot be overstated, which is
why we’ve always encouraged our members to seek
certification.
So, we are reducing or eliminating certain fees
currently associated with certification and
re-certification.

SHRM is designing its certification program to meet the highest
standards of the industry. In order to ensure that there is no conflict of interest, SHRM will create a separate credentialing arm, the
SHRM Certification Board. The SHRM Certification Board will manage all aspects of the certification program, including the overall development of the exam, eligibility requirements, and issuance of recertification.
This best practice is commonly used in the certification industry by
organizations such as the American Society of the Association Executives (ASAE), the Project Management Institution (PMI), and
