programmes at UCLan

At the University of Central Lancashire, UCLan, we realise that not everyone

wants to study for a University qualification in the traditional way in the classroom.

With today’s mobile technologies and the internet, it is possible to study a UCLan

undergraduate or postgraduate programme from more or less anywhere in the

world via elearning, distance learning or mixed mode methods.

With these programmes, you can study flexibly to suit your own personal and

work commitments, whilst being assured of the same teaching quality and

learning resources as enjoyed by UCLan classroom-based students. Our tailored IT

and online learning facilities mean that you will be supported throughout your

course by dedicated staff. You will also be able to form ‘virtual’ support groups

with your fellow students, even though you may never or rarely meet!

Take a look at just some of the wide range of UCLan courses, available in

elearning, distance learning and mixed mode formats. Then, contact us to find

out more about the programmes and the learning support available.

Part-time, 1 year, October start - see www.astronomy.com for further information and the next start date

Gain an informed view of concepts in cosmology with this course, without recourse to complex mathematics in your study. Learn about the beginning

of the Universe, including the creation of extremely small elementary particles and the processes that led to the formation of the very large structures seen today. This module begins to explain how the Universe began and subsequently developed to its present observed form. You will learn how the

Big Bang created all elementary particles, about processes that led to the formation of today's galaxies, galaxy clusters and larger-scale structures, and how we can probe the cosmological history of the Universe.

Certificate Sun, Earth and Climate - distance learning

Part-time, 1 year, October start - see www.astronomy.com for further information and the next start date

In this course, you will be introduced to the Sun and the Earth as complex systems and how they interact to produce the environment we live in.

Alongside detailed course notes, your studies will include a mixture of

theoretical and observational approaches with data-based and observational exercises. Starting with an exploration of the Sun, Earth and Climate as complex systems, this module then looks at the interactions that cause them to be

interlinked. You will study developments on astronomical, geological, historical and annual timescales and gain an understanding of the context of such matters as climate change and space weather. Practical exercises extend this understanding and develop appropriate scientific skills.

This programme provides a basis for countries to understand the legal implications of embarking on a new nuclear power build programme - those in Government, in regulatory bodies and future operating companies would benefit most from its content. In particular, it is for legal professionals working in the nuclear sector or those looking to join the sector, and is aimed at those who have responsibilities for safety and security, which means that they interface with nuclear law and regulation in their daily work. It has direct relevance across the whole sector, including nuclear power, nuclear waste

The programme is unique, partly because of its overall content, but also because it is being delivered by academics that have worked most of their careers within the nuclear industry at senior levels in the nuclear regulator, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and BNFL. This means that not only is knowledge of nuclear law and regulation passed on, but also knowledge is imparted of how the law is implemented through national regulations and the licensing regime. The programme will provide insights into how a nuclear regulatory body oversees the nuclear industry and
