ÄRUÒHA CONCEPT
1.
Introduction & calculation
Two chapters of Båhat Paräsara Horä Çästra namely padädhyäyaù (Äruòha or pada) and upapadädhyäyaù (Gauna or Upapäda) are the foundation for understanding the concept of äruòha pada in jyotiña.
1.1 Method of pada calculation
Paräsara teaches the calculation of the äruòha or pada for the Bhäva and Graha in padädhyäyaù (Äruòha or pada). The pada of the Lagna will correspond to the räçi arrived at by counting as many räçi from lagna lord as he is away from the lagna bhäva. Similarly for graha pada, count from the graha to its own räçi and then count as many räçi from this own räçi.
However, the äruòha pada of any bhäva or graha cannot be in the same bhäva or the seventh from it. In such a case where the äruòha/pada falls in the same bhäva or the seventh from it, the äruòha/pada should be taken as being in the tenth (10th) bhäva from the one arrived at. Similarly äruòha or pada of the other bhäva can be calculated from their lords.
Unless otherwise specified, the word ‘pada’ or ‘äruòha’ generally refers to äruòha lagna or lagna pada and this is of primary importance.
If a graha owns two räçi or if a räçi is owned by two graha, then consider the stronger räçi/graha respectively for the calculation of the graha/bhäva pada respectively. For this purpose note that (1) the planets from Mars to Saturn own two signs each and (2) Aquarius is owned by Saturn & Rähu while Scorpio is owned by Mars & Ketu. Determination of the stronger planet/sign is as per standard rules of sources of strength of signs and planets (refer Näräyaëa daçä book by this author).

Äruòha: income & expenditure
2.1.1 Source of income or financial gains
If the 11th
from äruòha lagna is either occupied or aspected by a planet, the native will be happy and rich. The people causing these gains are seen from the natural signification of these planets. Natural benefic planets show wealth coming through various means while natural malefic planets indicate questionable means. If both benefic and malefic planets are there then either both means exist or the dominant planet shall have a say. If the planet(s) are in exaltation, mülatrikona or svakñetra then the native has good finances and comforts.
Jaimini stresses the need to examine the 6th
house from äruòha lagna for the specific purpose of determining the means adopted for questionable income due to the dictum ‘tanou tana daëòa hara’ i.e. the 6th house is the daëòa (punishment) as the 11th house (being 6th from the 6th house – bhavat bhävaà principle) is the hara (destruction/ Rudra). For example if Mars is associated with the 6th
from äruòha lagna then the native may join the police department and can have ‘side income’ by using the methods of Mars like threatening or putting fear in some form or manner. Such people are great fighters as well since malefic planets in the 3rd or 6th house from AL give a lot of paräkrama.
If the 12th
house from äruòha lagna is neither occupied or aspected by a graha while the 11th
2.1.2 Quantum of income or financial gains
The quantum of income or financial gains will correspond to the number of planets placed in or aspecting the 11th
house while the expenses will depend on the number of planets placed in or aspecting the 12th
house from äruòha lagna. Wealth is multiplied if the number for gains is much higher than that for expenses. Another method of judging this is to examine the number of sarväñöakavarga dots in the 11th
and 12th houses from AL. A greater number in the 11th house is conducive for a higher income. Finally, it is the Näräyaëa daçä of the signs aspecting the 11th from äruòha lagna that give the periods of better income and raise. Äruòha pada of other bhäva placed in the 11th
house from äruòha lagna indicates gains from such bhäva as well.
The quantum of gains is progressively more if – • If there is argalä on the 11th
house, especially that of a benefic planet;
• If the abovementioned planet causing argalä is in svakñetra, mülatrikona or exaltation, the gains will be progressively higher.
• If the said 11th
house is aspected by a benefic planet, especially from lagna or 9th
house, the gains will be progressively higher. • If a planet is placed in the 11th
house from äruòha lagna in svakñetra, mülatrikona or exaltation, the gains will be progressively higher.
• In all these cases, the 12th house from AL should also be free from malefic association.
2.1.3 Source of expenditure or financial loss
Losses and expenditure is seen from the 12th
house from äruòha lagna. If the 12th
house from äruòha lagna is either occupied or aspected by both benefic and malefic planets, the native will have high earnings but many expenses as well. Just as mentioned for the 11th house from AL, benefic planets cause income and expenditure through fair means while malefic planets indicate unfair or illegal means. The dominant influence maybe considered in the case of both benefic and malefic planets besides realizing that both sources of income and expenditure shall prevail.
Äruòha pada of other bhäva placed in the 12th
house from lagna pada also indicate the sources of troubles and losses provided they have malefic associations else they will indicate heavy expenses inspite of high earnings.
The nature of the planet indicates the sources of losses and expenditure. Sun, Venus and Rähu indicate expenses on government (king) account. If the Moon is also involved with these planets then the losses will surely occur and will be quite heavy threatening insolvency, debts and other problems. Sun causes trouble with top government leaders or the king himself, Venus indicates bureaucrats while Rähu shows troubles due to deadly politicians and schemers. In all such cases, the malefic planets in the 6th
house from äruòha lagna should be stronger than those in the 12th
If instead, Mercury is either placed, aspects or associates with the 12th
from äruòha lagna, then the losses or expenses are due to relatives. A malefic planet associating with mercury can indicate disputes and litigation as the cause of a financial loss and trouble. Jupiter instead causes expenses due to huge (inflated) taxes besides excessive personal expenses. Saturn and Mars show expenses due to elder/younger co-born respectively.
These very people indicated for losses shall be the source of income or gains if these planets associate with the 11th house from äruòha lagna.

Äruòha: Health issues
Health related matters are examined from the märaka 2nd
& 7th
houses. If the nodes Rähu or Ketu are placed in these houses from äruòha lagna, the native will be troubled by disorders of the stomach or fire. The stomach is kept in order by the garbha agni (digestive fire). Thus, the nodes placed in the märaka houses causes troubles due to the digestive fire or external fire hazards. Worshipping agni devatä (adhi devatä of the Sun) is recommended.
Saturn & Rähu associating in the 2nd
/7th
house show premature death or calamity. It can also show loss of leg or troubles in the knees provided the ninth house from lagna is also afflicted. Lameness is sure to happen if the said sign is also owned by Saturn while Saturn alone causes windy disorders. Venus and Ketu in the 2nd
/7th
can show spermatorrhea. Mercury afflicted by Ketu in the 2nd
/7th
house shows breakage of bones, while its affliction by Saturn or Rähu causes various hormonal disorders and excessive fat. Affliction by the Sun also causes hormonal disorders while Rähu, Saturn & Sun will cause distress of bones and strange fevers. If the 2nd
/7th
house happens to be owned by Mercury or Mars and is occupied by Mars & Saturn, nasal disorders are indicated while Mars & Sun so placed caused nasal obstruction or bleeding of the nose.
If Jupiter & Saturn are in the 2nd /7th house disorders of ears and/or eyes are indicated. Mercury & Mars in signs other than those they own or Jupiter & Rähu so placed in the 2nd
/7th
house show dental problems. Ketu placed in such houses aspected by another malefic indicates that the native is adventurous, has (prematurely) grey hair and a big male organ.

Door to the Äruòha – 7
thhouse
If Jupiter, Venus or Moon are alone or in combination in the 7th
house from äruòha lagna, the native will be very wealthy. If a planet (both benefic or malefic) is exalted in the 7th
house from äruòha lagna, the native will be affluent and famous. Moon & Jupiter placed in the 1st
or 7th
house from äruòha lagna promise fame through popularity and knowledge/intelligence respectively.
The 2nd
house is also like the 7th
house in this aspect and for this reason, the cara däräkäraka is the significator of both 7th
and 2nd
houses. Mercury, Jupiter or Venus placed in these houses promise wealth and riches due to spouse/business (7th
house) and family/inheritance etc (2nd
house). In such houses, Mercury makes a person lord over vast lands while Venus gives eloquence, poetry and entertainment skills that cause the räjayoga.

Äruòha & Daräpada: Relationship issues
The äruòha lagna indicates the individual personality as perceived by the world and hence the Moon is the natural significator of the äruòha lagna. The daräpada is the personality of the spouse or partners. In the case of individuals the äruòha lagna is important while for famous spouses the daräpada needs examination.
5.1.1 Relationship with spouse
If the daräpada is in a kendra or koëa from the äruòha lagna, then the native is well off and also has good relationship with spouse (externally at least, as that is what äruòha is all about). Such people will never leave their spouse. Strong planets in the äruòha lagna/daräpada give riches and fame due to the individual himself or spouse respectively.
If the upapäda is in a kendra or koëa from the äruòha lagna then the spouse is well off and shall love the native. If instead, the upapäda is in a dusthäna (6th/8th/12th house) from äruòha lagna then the spouse shall reject the native and there shall be quarrels and constant bickering.
5.1.2 Love affairs
Daräpada also shows love affairs. If the daräpada is in dusthäna (6th
/ 8th
/12th
5.1.3 Cementing bonds
Even if the daräpada is in dusthäna (6th
/ 8th
/12th
house) from äruòha lagna, if at least one planet connects the two of them while simultaneously being in kendra, koëa or upacaya (3rd
, 6th
, 10th
& 11th
houses of growth), then the relationship will gradually mature after initial tribulations.

Universal principles
The principles taught by Paräsara are universal in nature in that whatever has been stated for äruòha lagna for the native is applicable to spouse from upapäda and other relations from the other bhäva äruòha. Further, the rules/dictum given for äruòha lagna are also applicable from kärakämça and päka lagna for the native while for other relations, they are examined from their respective carakäraka or the päka räçi of the bhäva lords.
7.
Upadeça (Advise)
Äruòha is a very vast concept and it is not possible to teach everything in a few hours. We have explained the basic ruled for judging the äruòha lagna this time. Further study includes –
1. Bhäva from äruòha lagna like co-born from 3rd
/11th
houses from AL or co-born of spouse from 3rd
/11th
houses from UL.
2. Marriage(s) and divorce/separation from Upapäda and examination of subsequent marriage from 8th
house from UL etc.
3. Transits and other results from Äruòha have been discussed in the Deva Keralaà (Candrakala näòi). One has to be very careful in understanding these principles as some of the results are given for specific näòi-amça and are not universally applicable. Principles like transit of Jupiter in kendra from AL being very good or aspecting the 2nd
from UL (räçi dåñöi on marriage date) for sustained marriage are universally applicable.
4. Bhäva Äruòha reckoned from the Sürya lagna or Candra lagna are very vital. For example the Sun in 2nd
, 12th
, 6th
or 8th
5. Understanding Upapäda is another issue especially when combined with the Upapäda from sürya and candra lagna i.e. UL (A12), AS12 and AMo12. Life after death is revealed from AMo12.
6. Examination of the various bhäva pada with reference to the äruòha lagna shows the relationship of these persons (externally) with the native. Similarly if done with the Upapäda, the relationship with the spousal family comes to the fore. For example if the Moon is in 7th from AL then the native finds the mother to be in opposition or always controlling while the same Moon in the 7th from UL shows a very difficult mother-in-law. Note that we have taken ‘mother for Moon’ in the example.
7. Graha pada are a separate matter altogether and they indicate the effect of people in our lives. We have given some examples of the use of graha pada in our books. Further study of this area is required.
With these words, we conclude this session of the conference on Concepts in Äruòha.
