The Autodata Most Serviced Vehicles Report is currently in its seventh year and compiles its data using analytics from Autodata’s extensive customer base across the globe. In this report, Autodata collated and analysed 2021 data from customers in 22 key countries to provide valuable industry intelligence. The report’s findings are used by industry media to communicate useful insights on global automotive aftermarket trends to their readership.

The term ‘most serviced’ is used deliberately throughout this report. When used in relation to vehicles, it refers to the vehicle model information that workshops have accessed most frequently during 2021. It can reflect a range of factors – from the number of vehicles of a certain model in the aftermarket and their average age, to complexity of service, to manufacturer-recommended service intervals. The report also highlights key service, maintenance, and repair trends seen over this period to help aftermarket businesses plan for the coming year.

More than 85,000 workshops subscribe to Autodata’s applications to access precise information required to service, maintain, diagnose, and repair vehicles from more than 142 manufacturers. Aftermarket professionals access the company’s robust databases from more than 100 countries, including those subscribing directly to the Autodata application and those accessing via third-party solutions.

Introduction

(4)

In 2021, the UK government confirmed a 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars – accelerated from a previous pledge of 2040 – while Norway introduced a date of 2025 for the last fossil fuel-powered vehicle sales in the country.

California in late 2020 introduced a ban on internal combustion engine- powered vehicles beginning in 2035, the most ambitious such schedule in the US.

Sales of electric vehicles in Europe more than tripled between 2019 and 2021: from 3.3% to over 10% of all new vehicle sales. The aftermarket will feel impact of this by 2025, when most countries will require them to undergo annual road safety tests. The current generation of electric vehicles coming into the aftermarket reflect the 2016/17 models.

Hybrids increased in 2021 to 1.5% of all aftermarket data requests (up from 1.2% in 2020) while electric vehicles represented 0.3%. Diesel (which includes the majority of LCVs) continues to represent 56% of vehicles serviced by workshops overall while petrol vehicles represent 42%.

Key trends and insights

A combination of the microprocessor shortage and suppressed demand from the pandemic’s lingering impact meant October 2021 was the worst month for new vehicles since the early 1990s in many countries. This will likely continue the increase in age of vehicle fleets seen in recent years; Autodata has seen an increase in the average age of vehicles repaired in workshops.

In the last 12 months, the most frequently serviced model years were 2012 and 2015, with 2017 and 2010 the newest and oldest model years represented in the top ten.

When weighted by pageviews, the average serviced vehicle in workshops requested by technicians in Autodata over the last year was over 11 years old.

“Increasing complexity of vehicles in the aftermarket will be one of the greatest challenges facing independent

technicians. Traditionally, technicians have not also needed to be electricians and computer repair specialists; this is changing as more and more aspects of vehicles are computerised. We’re working hard to make sure OE information is available to workshops: we increased the number of vehicles with wiring diagrams by 10% over the past two years and the number of vehicles with ECM (engine control module) diagrams by 7%.”

Manufacturers

Overall, Ford was again the most-serviced manufacturer at 10.93% of all workshop data requests on the Autodata online platform. However, Volkswagen has also continued to see strong interest in workshop data, now standing at 10.44% of all requests and the most-serviced brand in 13 of the 21 countries analysed.

Notable shifts from 2020 saw Volvo displaced by Volkswagen as the most-serviced manufacturer in Sweden. Volkswagen had been the most-serviced brand in Sweden prior to 2019 before Volvo took the spot for the last two years. Ireland saw Ford narrowly edge out Volkswagen, the most-serviced manufacturer in the country in 2020, while Volkswagen displaced Renault as the most-serviced vehicle in Spain for 2021.

Finally, Hungary saw Ford as the most-serviced manufacturer in 2021 when previously Opel/Vauxhall held the top spot in 2019 followed by Volkswagen in 2020; all three brands were within half a percentage point in terms of market share.

The top three most accessed topics in Autodata’s workshop application in 2021 were: Engine Oil, Technical Specifications, and Fuses & Relays. The Wiring Diagrams module was used for the longest average time by technicians according to time used per day.

This year saw technicians access over 300 million pages of information across 54 million accessed vehicle models in the Autodata workshop application, reflecting strong growth in demand for accurate technical data.

2021 aftermarket trends

Main service

Demand for technical service data has been generally constant across 2021, barring a dip over the Christmas period seen in previous years. This contrasts dramatically to 2020, which saw a fall-off in Q2 due to lockdown in many countries, followed by a spike in Q3 as motorists sought to get their vehicles roadworthy again.

Tyres

Tyre data usage in workshops saw a less-noticeable seasonal pattern, with December 2020 lacking the spike in seen in previous years. This may be due to a combination of the year’s changing work patterns and Europe’s warmest winter on record.

2021 aftermarket trends

Battery

Usage of the battery module spiked in January and February of 2021;

while expected in winter months, this also to likely reflects vehicles originally registered in Q1 coming in for their annual service after a year of reduced usage.

Air conditioning

2021 saw the hottest summer on record according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This is backed by our air conditioning service data for 2021, which saw record usage from June to August.

The Fiat 500 takes second place, displacing the 2013 Ford Fiesta which was the second most-serviced car of 2020. The 2004-8 Focus, which had been the second most-serviced car in 2019 and third most-serviced in 2020, dropped back to seventh place. A Volkswagen – the Golf VII – appeared on the global top ten list in fifth place, though the brand’s country-by-country presence is driven by high demand for data for its Transporter LCVs.

Holden continues to exercise a strong presence in the Australian

aftermarket, with the most serviced car from the former marque being the 2012 Holden Colorado – displacing the 2006 Holden Commodore which had held the spot in 2020. France’s aftermarket remains very strongly dominated by local marques, with all top ten most serviced cars being Renault, Peugeot, or Citroen.

Key motorcycle insights

The Honda CBR retained the top spot as most-serviced motorcycle globally for a third year; the second and third spot also remained unchanged with the BMW R1200 and Honda CB. The US saw the Honda TRX keep top spot for a second year, replacing the Kawasaki Ninja in 2020. It should be noted that our most-serviced motorcycles reflect those that are most frequently seen in bike shops with a professional data solution – which means they are likely to represent those that owners may feel less comfortable servicing themselves.
