A New Prince!

It is the evening of 21 June 1982 - the first day of

su m me r. Newspaper and television reporters near the doors of St Marys Hospital in Paddington , London, talk quicklyinto their telephones.

'It's a boy ... Yes! ... Princess Diana has a little boy ... at 9.03 this evening ... England has a new prince! ...Yes,and mother and ch ild are well ...We're waiting to see Prince Charles...'

At eleven o'clock that night, Prince Charles - the Prince of Wales - comesoutof thehospital. He answers question sfrom the reportersabout hisnew SOI L

'He has blue eyes,' Prince Charlessays.'He and his motherare very well. They're co ming home tomorrow.'

'What'shisname ?' the reporterswant to know. Prince Charles sm iles. 'We don't know,' he says. 'We're thinking about it.'

Charles likes the name Arthur, but Diana does not. She wants William. A week later, the repo rters have their answer:WilliamArthur Philip Loui s.Hismother's name for him is'W ills'.

Earl y Days

Prince Charles wants Mabel Anderson to be Prince William's nanny.She was Pri nce Charles'snann y years before.PrincessDiana says no.She doesn't want an old person .They give thejob to Barbara Barn es.

Princess Diana is a ver y loving mother. She likes havingWilliam near her. and her bedroo mat Kensington

It is 1983.Prin ce Charles and Prin cessDian a are going

to visit Australiaand New Zealand. But Diana wants to

be withWilliam.What can she do?

Then the Prime Mini ster of Australia , Malcolm

Praser, wr ites a letter to Diana . In it he says,'Please

bring PrinceWilliam with yo u.'

Diana talks to Charles, and he says yes. They take

William to Australia wit h them.The yo ung prince stays

in Woomargama, a place in New So uth W1les, with

Nanny l3arnes.Hismoth erand father often visit him .

On 15 Sept ember 1984, a new broth er arrives for

William.Two days later, he go es to the hospital to see

him. The new child's name is Harry,and William loves

playin g with him.

School Days

A year later, on 24 Septem ber 1985,Williamstartsschool at Mrs Mynor's Scho ol in Notting Hill, in London. It is very near to Kensington Palace. A policeman

goes to school with William every day.

On the firstmo rnin g William runs ou tof the car, but

hismo th er sto ps him.The newspap er repo rters allwant

to take his photograph . Televisio n rep orters want his

picture, too.

every morning, Now he knows numbers.and he can

write hisnam e.He qu ickly makesa lot of friends. Bu t he isnot alwaysa good boyat home.

'Go to bed,William,'says Nanny Bar nes,

'N o,' says William.'You can 't say that to me! I'm

go ing to be kingone day.'

In Janu ar y, 1987 ,William has a new nanny - Ruth Wallace.Williamsname for her is'NannyRo of'.

At the sam e time,William starts at WetherbySchool.

This is in Notting Hill, too. Here he plays a lot of

sports, and he getsa pr ize forsw im ming . Every yearthe

scho ol hasa Sports Day.William and hisfriendswatc h Princess Diana and Prin ce Charles in the games for mothersand father s.

He moves to Ludgrove School in Berkshire in

Septe mber 1990. He lives there,and he goes home for

scho ol holidays. William is very happy at Ludgrove. Again, he plays a lot of games, and he is good at football.At twelve,he getsa prize forsho oting.

An Accident at School

It isJune 1991 , and William is playing golf with his

friends at Ludgrovc. Sudde nly, the re is an accide nt.A

friend hits him on the head.The schoo lsends William

to a hospital in Reading.

Princess Diana is eating with a friend. She hears abo u t the accide nt and goes quickly to the hospital.

Pr ince Charles also hears about it and drives to

Readin g.

The doctor s are not happ y.They send William to Great Or mond Street Hospital for Ch ildre n, in London . Diana goes with William ,and Prince Charles

goes in his car.

At Great Ormo nd Street,William has a small but important ope ratio n on his head . His mother waitsat

the hospital.Prince Charlescan no tstay because he has

important visitors. But the operatio n goes well.The

doctor s sayto Pr incessDiana,'William isOK.' Charles and Diana Divorce

Diana and Charles are not happy. William knows

this.He knowsabouttheir problems,and heisunhappy

the coun try,and William knowsthis,too.

Prince Charles and PrincessDianado not live in the

High grove House. William visits him there. He likes

Highg rovc, and he loves his father. But it is a diffi cult

Princess Diana lives at Ken sington Palace with the boys.William loves to run to his mother's bedroom

'You can 't,'says Harry.'You 're going to be king.'

William doesnot want to think about this.

Pri nce Cha rles and Princess Diana divorce in Aug ust, 1996 .After that, hol idayswith their moth er and father

are never the same for William and Harry.

Their mother takes them to the Car ibbea n to sw im in the sea. Or she takes them ski ing in Canada or America. Charles takes them ski ing in Klosters, in Switzerland, or to Greece, or on a boat in the

Mediterranean.They ofte n go to Balm oral,the Queen 's

home in Scotland.

After the divorce,William and his brothe r havea new nanny at their father's home. Her name is Alexandra

'Tiggy' Legge-Bourke and she is young. Diana is not ver y happyabout Tigb'Y,but William and Harrylikeher.

After l.udgrove, William goes to England 's famous sch ool for boys- Eton. It is a friendly schoo l. He is very happ y there, and he hasmanyfriends.

Some times William goes out ofthe schoo l with two

or three boys.They go into the town of Windsor, to

somet imes. But two policem en alwa ys go with the

boys, and theyare always near.

Every year,at Eton, there is an Open Day.The boys' families can visit the school on that im po rt ant day.

Burone year,William does no t wan t his mother and fathe r at the Open Day.It is a happy day for his friends and their families, and he does not want a lot of photographersthere.Theprinceand pri ncessunder stand, and theydo notgo.But William doesaskTigb'Y.

The Car Accident

Fivedayslater,Charlesand his sonsgo to London and look at the thousandsofflower snear Ken singt on Palace.

They talk to som e ofthe people there. People in every country watch the picturesof William on television.

Prince William is not a boy now - he is a young

Diana was a very good mothe r.'Her boys' were very

im portant to her.Andshe wanted to reach them about

people - not on ly about queens, princes and

pnncesses.

William went shopping with her and they went into

cafes. They went to see people with no homes,and to

see very illpeople.

Now Diana is dead,and Prince Charles is trying to do so me of the same things with William and his

brother. It isa difficult time for them all,but they are a

strong and loving fami ly Princess Dianas fam ily want to do things forWilliam and Harry,too.
