It is the evening of 21 June 1982 - the first day of
su m me r. Newspaper and television reporters near the doors of St Marys Hospital in Paddington , London, talk quicklyinto their telephones.
'It's a boy ... Yes! ... Princess Diana has a little boy ... at 9.03 this evening ... England has a new prince! ...Yes,and mother and ch ild are well ...We're waiting to see Prince Charles...'
At eleven o'clock that night, Prince Charles - the Prince of Wales - comesoutof thehospital. He answers question sfrom the reportersabout hisnew SOI L
'He has blue eyes,' Prince Charlessays.'He and his motherare very well. They're co ming home tomorrow.'
'What'shisname ?' the reporterswant to know. Prince Charles sm iles. 'We don't know,' he says. 'We're thinking about it.'
Charles likes the name Arthur, but Diana does not. She wants William. A week later, the repo rters have their answer:WilliamArthur Philip Loui s.Hismother's name for him is'W ills'.
Earl y Days
Prince Charles wants Mabel Anderson to be Prince William's nanny.She was Pri nce Charles'snann y years before.PrincessDiana says no.She doesn't want an old person .They give thejob to Barbara Barn es.

Diana talks to Charles, and he says yes. They take

On 15 Sept ember 1984, a new broth er arrives for
William.Two days later, he go es to the hospital to see
him. The new child's name is Harry,and William loves
playin g with him.
School Days
A year later, on 24 Septem ber 1985,Williamstartsschool at Mrs Mynor's Scho ol in Notting Hill, in London. It is very near to Kensington Palace. A policeman
goes to school with William every day.
On the firstmo rnin g William runs ou tof the car, but
hismo th er sto ps him.The newspap er repo rters allwant
to take his photograph . Televisio n rep orters want his
picture, too.
every morning, Now he knows numbers.and he can
write hisnam e.He qu ickly makesa lot of friends. Bu t he isnot alwaysa good boyat home.
'Go to bed,William,'says Nanny Bar nes,
'N o,' says William.'You can 't say that to me! I'm
go ing to be kingone day.'

In Janu ar y, 1987 ,William has a new nanny - Ruth Wallace.Williamsname for her is'NannyRo of'.
At the sam e time,William starts at WetherbySchool.
This is in Notting Hill, too. Here he plays a lot of
sports, and he getsa pr ize forsw im ming . Every yearthe
scho ol hasa Sports Day.William and hisfriendswatc h Princess Diana and Prin ce Charles in the games for mothersand father s.
He moves to Ludgrove School in Berkshire in
Septe mber 1990. He lives there,and he goes home for
scho ol holidays. William is very happy at Ludgrove. Again, he plays a lot of games, and he is good at football.At twelve,he getsa prize forsho oting.

to a hospital in Reading.
Princess Diana is eating with a friend. She hears abo u t the accide nt and goes quickly to the hospital.
Pr ince Charles also hears about it and drives to
Readin g.
The doctor s are not happ y.They send William to Great Or mond Street Hospital for Ch ildre n, in London . Diana goes with William ,and Prince Charles
goes in his car.
At Great Ormo nd Street,William has a small but important ope ratio n on his head . His mother waitsat
the hospital.Prince Charlescan no tstay because he has
important visitors. But the operatio n goes well.The
doctor s sayto Pr incessDiana,'William isOK.' Charles and Diana Divorce

Diana and Charles are not happy. William knows

High grove House. William visits him there. He likes

After l.udgrove, William goes to England 's famous sch ool for boys- Eton. It is a friendly schoo l. He is very happ y there, and he hasmanyfriends.
Some times William goes out ofthe schoo l with two
or three boys.They go into the town of Windsor, to

boys, and theyare always near.

William went shopping with her and they went into

brother. It isa difficult time for them all,but they are a
