This document gives a list of items to be checked before starting.

1. Introduction :

The aim of this document is to help you to provision TWG850 and Thomson MTA.

The TWG850 is a Thomson Cable Modem implemented with Wifi interface and embedded MTA.

Thomson MTA follow the packetcable and Docsis specifications.For any further information refer to the

Docsis1.0,1.1,2.0 , packetcable 1.0,1.5 specifications.

We will describe hereafter a basic configuration from the DHCP and some different configuration

filesrequired from CM and MTA.

Minimum configuration required :

• DHCP Server

• TFTP Server

• Time Server

• Log Server

• CMS Server

• CMTS

The provisioning server and Kerberos server are required for the security provisioning.

4. DHCP configuration

The DHCP server must provide the following information to the CM.

CM-1 CM 4 - the CM needs the following details:

Option 53: DHCP Message Type = DHCP Discover

Option 55: Parameter Request List

1 = Subnet Mask

2 = Time Offset

3 = Router

4 = Time Server

7 = Log Server

6 = Domain Name Server

66 = TFTP Server Name

67 = Bootfile name

122 = CableLabs Client Configuration

Define a Policy for the CM , which will provide “parameter Request list”

Remark : If the option 122 is notprovided to, the MTA part will be disabled . The paragraph [

option 122

]

describes how to set this option .

4.1.1. Policy for the Cable Modem

As mentioned before the Cable modem must receive the following information.

o

dhcp-lease-time is active by default and set to 604800 seconds, which is the

number of seconds in one week.

o

routers is the IP address of the CMTS cable interface, in this case 10.0.35.1

o

time-offset of the CM from Universal Coordinated. This is used by the CM to

calculate the local time, in order to time-stamp error logs.= 2

5. Configuration for the provisioning:

5.1. SIP releases

There are three possibilities to set specific SIP parameters for MTA.

The configuration can be set :

− By CM configuration file

− By CM and MTA configuration file

− By Web page

1 ) CM configuration file.

You must define a private TLV 168 and 169, respectively the registration parameter in relation with the

SIP server, and the Digitmap in the configuration file.

2 ) CM and MTA configuration file.(the most currently used).

If you use this method of provisioning , you must define one CM configuration file and one MTA

configuration file.CM configuration file can contain the “TLV 25 = 2 “in order to force this kind of

provisioning with two bootfiles one for CM and the other for MTA.

3 )Web Page (using CM configuration File)

In this case you must define only the TLV 170 in the CM configuration file.

You need to define the option 122 in the DHCP setting for the Cable modem part, with the sub-option1.

This option 122 is required to have a second Discover sent by the MTA part.

5.1.1. By CM config file

• TLV 168 : SIP configurations

VSIF 168 SIP related server ip , username and password for proxy authentication .You must specify this

VSIF if you want to make a phone call with proxy server.

Format: proxy ip|registrar ip|log ip|PhoneExt1|password1| PhoneExt2|password

If you want to specify the port number, you can append the ':' at the end of IP then assign the port

number.

10.6.64.102:5060|10.6.64.102:5060|10.6.64.3|1001|sip|

proxy ip : 10.6.64.102 ,port 5060

registrar ip : 10.6.64.102 ,port 5060

log ip : 10.6.64.3

Phone number for line 0 : 1001 , if the MTA has two ports , the line 1 will be 1002 .

10.6.64.102:5060|10.6.64.102:5060|10.6.64.3|1001|sip||1002|sip

• TLV 169 –SIP Digitmap

By default if you don't define the VSIF 169 in the configuration file ,the number that you can dial are the

following :

DigitMap: xxxxxxxx|xx+*|xx+#|*6[0189]|*7[0-35]|*74xxxxxxxx

• Examples of setting TLV 169

With this example you are allowed to dial a number of 10 digits.( 1 zero and 9 digits)

DigitMap: 0xxxxxxxxx

HEX translation to VSIF 169: 30.78.78.78.78.78.78.78.78.78

. This translation is sometime need .

• With this second example, considering the following dial plan:

0

Local

operator

00

Long-distance

operator

xxxx

Local extension number (starts with 1-5)

11x

Service number 110 112 113

3xxxxxxx

Thomson PoD Tool

The Thomson PoD Tool is a Windows application capable of creating the encrypted seed and PoD for

any given date.

The Thomson PoD Tool takes the following as arguments: Start Day (yyyy.mm.dd), End Day

(yyyy.mm.dd) and Seed.

The PoD Tool also has two buttons: 'Generate PoD' and 'Encrypt Seed'. 'Generate PoD' creates a unique

PoD for every day covered by the start and end days. 'Encrypt Seed' encrypts the seed for use in the

device configuration file settings.

Make sure to uncheck “Use Default Seed” if something other than “thomson” is to be used as the PoD

seed. If “Use Default Seed” is checked, “thomson” will be used and the text in the “Seed” field will be

ignored.

Note that the PoD is the hex string following the date. There will be no spaces in the resulting PoD or

Encrypted Seed.

5.2.3. Regular provisioning

• Without TLV 25

The THG520 is provisioned with two-config files see paragraph 5.3.1.

The TFTP server will provide the second bootfile directly (BASIC mode SEC) or indirectly using the

process snmp server, which informs the CM to download the bootfile for MTA part through the TFTP

server (HYBRID mode SEC).

All information are provided by the option 122 defined for the MTA part :

Option 122:

Suboption 1: TSP's Primary DHCP Server: 10.0.14.253 (4 bytes)

Suboption 3: TSP's Provisioning Server: CMSERV2.VOIPNET.COM (21 bytes)

The option 122 is mandatory in the DHCP offer to the CM , that will enable the MTA provisioning

.(at least define the suboption-1)

And then the sub-option 1-3-6 are required for the MTA part .

Examples :

For CM provisioning define :

Option 122:

Suboption 1: TSP's Primary DHCP Server: 10.0.14.253

For the MTA provisioning define :

Option 122:

Suboption 1: TSP's Primary DHCP Server: 10.0.14.253 (4 bytes)

Suboption 3: TSP's Provisioning Server: PROVSERV.VOIPNET.COM (21 bytes)

Suboption 6: TSP's Kerberos Realm Name: BASIC.1 (9 bytes)

Somtines you have to set the option in HEX format in the DHCP configuration

For CNR the option will be

option 122:

01:04:0A:00:0E:FD:03:17:00:08:70:72:6F:76:73:65:72:76:07:76:6F:69:70:6E:65:74

:03:63:6F:6D:06:09:05:42:41:53:49:43:01:31:00

For linux

The option looks like that :

option packetcable.primary-dhcp-server 10.0.14.253;

option packetcable.snmp-entity-address

00:08:70:72:6F:76:73:65:72:76:07:76:6F:69:70:6E:65:74:03:63:6F:6D:00;

option packetcable.kerberos-realm-name 05:42:41:53:49:43:01:31:00;

8. CMTS and QOS

Note that the CMTS should be at least Docsis 1.1 to set the quality of service, if the CMTS isn’t Docsis

1.1 Certified , it will have no garanty of QOS for the voice service.

You have to define also some service flow in the configuration file for Cable modem .[

10.1. Three Networking Modes

The gateway can be configured to provide connectivity between the cable company and the home LAN

in any one of three Networking Modes: CM, RG, and CH. This mode setting is under the control of the

cable company, who can select the mode to match the level of home networking support for which you

have subscribed. All units ship from the factory set for the RG mode, but a configuration file which the

cable company sends the cable modem section during its initialization can change it.

-Cable Modem (CM) Mode : it behaves as a brigde .

-Residential Gateway (RG) Mode : it behaves as a gateway .

59 Max Call Agent disconnects to ignore 0 decimal

When a call agent does not respond to MGCP/NCS messages, several retries and timeout periods are used to try to reestablish communications. If all retries fail and no backup call agent is available the call agent is declared unreachable. This setting is used to specify the number of times to ignore an unreachable Call Agent before disconnecting a telephone line and recovering resources and existing DQOS sessions. Example:

0: (Default) Once all retries are exhausted on a call agent and it is declared un-reachable, disconnect any existing telephone call in progress on this endpoint, recover resources and tear down DQOS sessions.

2: Ignore the first 2 times that the call agent becomes un-reachable and continue any phone calls in progress on this endpoint while attempting to reestablish communications with the call agent.

60 R0 Cadence (2000mS ON, 4000mS OFF) hex string

DESCRIPTION "This object represents a ring cadence in bit string format to define the cadence for R0. The ring cadence representation starts with the first 1 in the pattern (the leading 0s in the MSB are padding and are to be ignored). Each bit represents 100ms of tone; 1 is tone, 0 is no tone. 60 bits are used for cadence representation, LSB 4 bits are used for representing repeatable characteristics. 0000 means repeatable, and 1000 means non repeatable. Example: The hex representation of a ring cadence of 0.5 secs on; 4 secs off; repeatable would be: 0x1F.00.00.00.00.00."

64 Set DHCP Requirements 3 decimal

This VSIF is used to allow the MTA to be enabled when the Cable Modem accepts a DHCP offer without the PacketCable DHCP option (122). If the first 3 DHCP offers do not contain the Pktc option these DHCP offers will be rejected to comply with the PacketCable spec. If the 4th DHCP offer does not contain option 122 it will be accepted by the Cable Modem. Normally the CM will disable the MTA if the CM accepts a DHCP offer without the Pktc option. If this VSIF parameter is set to 1 or 2, the CM will allow the MTA to operate without the Pktc DHCP option 122. This mode will allow the EMTA to operate with provisioning servers that do not support option 122. This VSIF parameter is stored in the modem in NonVol memory and becomes the default for operation during the next boot time. 0: Require Pktc DHCP option 122. Disable MTA if 4 DHCP offers to the CM do not contain the Pktc DHCP option 122.

1: Enable MTA without the Pktc option. (The Initial boot will require 4 DHCP offers to comply with the PacketCable spec)

2: Require old Pktc DHCP option (177) (The initial boot will require 4 DHCP

offers to comply with the PacketCable spec) 3: Determined by ProvType(VSIF-25) , this is for backward compatible and default setting.

If VSIF-25=0 , the this VSIF is set automaticlly as 0. This is for current PacketCable Spec.

If VSIF-25 is 1 or 2 , the this VSIF is set

automaticlly as 1 for minimun requirement for DHCP options.
