Topic: Working with money
Lesson Focus: Determining if our money word problems are addition or subtraction and solving them!
Standard:
▪ 2.MD.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
Objectives:
▪ The student will demonstrate solving addition and subtraction word problems involving money.
Assessment:
▪ The student will solve and answer word problems on a piece of paper. They will be graded on if they solved the answer correct and if they used the $ and ¢ sign correctly. Each question will be worth 3 points, they will receive one point for getting the correct answer, one point for putting a label on the answer and one point if they used the correct sign to label the problem.

▪ Paper
▪ Pencil/writing utensil Procedure:
▪ Anticipatory Set:
o We have now worked on solving word problems of both addition and subtraction! But now it's time to put our skills to the test and try and pick out what problems are addition and which ones are subtraction before we solve!
o But before we do that let's take a look at our proficiency scale! o Reflect Back on our Proficiency scale
▪ What have we covered so far? ▪ What do we still need to cover?
▪ Is there anything you might need more practice one? ▪ I do:
o Since our last two lessons have focused on either just addition or just subtraction word problems it is now time for us to work on seeing a mix of both and being able to solve them!
o When solving a mix of addition and subtraction word problems there are a few very important things for us to do!
▪ When looking at word problems that are a mix of subtraction or addition and there is not only one type of problem but a few addition and a few subtraction the first thing we should do is look for our CLUE WORD! Our CLUE WORD allows us to know if they want us to subtract or add in the word problem!
• Subtraction CLUE WORDS:
o Subtract, difference, decrease, take away, less, fewer, minus, and how many more/how much more.
• Addition CLUE WORDS:
o Add, sum, plus, join, combine, altogether, both, in all, total, increase.
▪ Our 2nd thing to remember is that we still need to use what we learned about place value when solving these problems!
▪ Place value is so important in us getting the correct value, so it is important we remember and use what we know!
o Teachers turn to do some examples!
▪ Kelly was counting the money in her piggy banks. She has 3 dimes, 2 quarters, and 2 one-dollar bills. She wants to have $5.00 in her piggyback. How much money does she need to get to have that much?
• First, look for our CLUE WORD. Can you find it? I did it’s how much more!
• How much does Kelly have?
o Remember we have to take her 80¢ and change it into $0.80.
o Now let’s see how much she has. ▪ $0.80+$2.00=$2.80 o It’s now time to subtract!
o How much more money does Kelly need? ▪ She needs $2.20 more!
▪ Marie, and Billy were counting their money to see how much money they had combined! Marie had 2 nickels, 2 quarters, and 2 five-dollar bill. Billy had 2 pennies, 1 dime, and 2 five-dollar bills. How much money do they have combined?
• Fist, can you find our CLUE WORD? I found it and it is combined!
• How much money does Marie have?
o Remember to turn her 60¢ into $0.60 o $0.60+$10.00=$10.60
• How much money does Billy have?
o Remember to turn his 12¢ into $0.12 o $0.12+$5.00+$5.00=$10.12
• How much money do they have combined? o $10.60+$10.12=$20.72
• Combined they have $20.72 ▪ We do:
o Now that I have done some examples let's try and do some together!
o Let's take out some paper and something to write with so we can solve these problems together!
▪ Abby and Katie want to go get a snack. First, they need to count how much money they have total. Abby has 3 nickels, 1 quarter and 3 one-dollar bills. Katie has 2 pennies, 5 dimes, and 1 five-one-dollar bill. How much money do they have total?
• What is our CLUE WORD? o total
• How much money does Abby have? o $3.40
• How much money does Katie have? o $5.52
• How much money do they have total? o $8.92
▪ Caleb and Joe are counting how much money they have. They want to see how much more money Caleb has then Joe. Caleb has 2 nickels, 1 quarter and 1 ten-dollar bill. Joe had 3 pennies, 4 one-dollar bills and 1 five-dollar bill. How much more does Caleb have then Joe?
• What is our CLUE WORD? o How much more
• How much money does Caleb have? o $10.35
• How much money does Joe have? o $9.03
o $1.32 ▪ You do:
o Now that we have done some together it's your turn!
o Let's take out some paper and get ready to solve some problems!
▪ Mark and Mike were counting the money in their wallets. They want to know how much they have all together. Mark has 2 quarters, 2 one-dollar bills and 1 five-dollar bill. Mike has 2 nickels, 3 dimes, and 1 ten-dollar bill. How much money do they have all together?
• $17.90
▪ Kelly and Kevin are going to the candy store. The candy they want to buy is $3.25. They have 3 nickels, 2 dimes, and 1 five-dollar bill. What is the difference in how much money they have and how much the candy cost?
• $2.10
▪ Kenzie’s mom gave her $5.32. Kenzie has 2 pennies, 1 quarter, and 1 five-dollar bill. How much money does Kenzie now have in all?
• $10.59 ▪ Closure:
o Now that we have finished answering our three questions let’s take a final look at our proficiency scale!
▪ Have we learned everything we needed? ▪ Where do you think you are now? o Here is a challenge!
o While making your word problems make sure you use a CLUE WORD. Also make sure you know the answer to your word problem.
o Now go and ask someone to try and solve your word problems! Modification:
▪ There will be a voice over of the video to help those students who benefit from having things read out loud to them.
