Uppsala Analysis and Visualization

Progress report for 2001

1. Overview of the results

During the fiscal year 2001 we have continued our highly successful analysis of satellite measurements using data from the Swedish missions (FREJA, ASTRID-2), and CLUSTER satellites, as well as engaging in international collaboration with the POLAR and INTERBALL teams.

We have developed further the Orbit Visualization Tool (OVT), which is a software package prepared for the Cluster mission and used by over 350 registered users worldwide. The software is advertised on the ESA CLUSTER homepage and it is available for download from our server at

http://ovt.irfu.se

Our research results represent highest international standard as evidenced by 9 articles published in refereed international journals of good reputation. 8 invited presentations on renowned international conferences.

This research programme ensures high visibility for the Swedish space programme in the international forum with minimal financial contribution. The majority of funds from SNSB were allocated for salary of one PhD student (Y. Khotyaintsev).

4. Development of OVT

The work with the upgrading of OVT was done mainly by the graduate student Mykola

Khotyaintsev (Ukraine). His visits to IRF-U were supported partly by SNSB and partly by Svenska Institutet.

Figure 1 shows a screenshot of the new user interface to OVT released in April 2002.

A new feature in the current OVT release is a data visualization module, which will be used in future studies of measurements from Cluster and other satellites. The illustration below shows an example of conjugate multi-spacecraft and ground based study of auroral arc (initial results were reported on AGU Fall Meeting by Y. Khothyaintsev).

The new version of OVT makes it possible to visualize data along the orbit and also data along the field lines. This is especially useful to illustrate mapping of different orbit parts to the outer magnetosphere. Simple data from the text file can be easily imported to OVT with data import wizard, which supports several popular time formats.

Figure 2 shows orbits (solid lines) and magnetic footprints (dotted lines) of Polar (red) and Astrid-2 (blue). Magnetic footprints cross the auroral arc in the North America seen on the image from Polar UV imager. Arc footprints are collocated with the Canadian magnetometer network CANOPUS.
