Dean Lewellen, President
Welcome, ARC members to the new year 2021. Goodbye to 2020, the year that turned our lives upside down and inside out. Let us all hope for a “new normal” to emerge from the ashes this year.
I want to use this month’s space to introduce to you the ARC Officers for 2021. There are some different faces on the ARC Board this year. They are not all new faces, as some of us have been around the club since it was founded.
Our new 1st Vice-President is Dave Meyer. Dave and his wife, Jackie, are the club Historians and collectors and holders of club memorabilia. Dave serves as Shop Foreman and on various committees. He and his black 1957 Chevrolet hardtop are seen at most every driving event. Thanks fo Dave for steppng up to serve the club.
Our new 2nd Vice-President is Ray Peterson. We all know Ray by his beautiful red Cord roadster. Ray has extraordinary wood working skills and has served as president of the SCW Woodworking Club. He has helped several members with restoration projects requiring wood rebuilding and fabricating. Thank you Ray for stepping up to serve.
Our new Secretary is Nancy Haviland. Nancy has the skills and experience to gather and collect all the actions from Board and General meetings as well as serve as the communications link between ARC and the SCW Recreation Center folks. Nancy is the wife of Doug, our Assistant Shop Manager. If she can keep Doug in line, she will have no trouble keeping the rest of this group on their toes. Thank you, Nancy, for stepping up to serve the club in this important role.
Returning for another year are our two Treasurers, Pete Mahnke and Gary Kakert. Pete serves as the Treasurer for Accounts Receivable and Gary serves as the Treasurer for Accounts Payable. These two guys, along with the background accounting support of Suzanne Jones have collected, recorded, paid out and reported for all of ARC’s financial activites and needs in exemplary fashion. Thank you for all your continuing valuable service to ARC.
Finally, I am honored, happy and thrilled to serve as President of ARC this year. At ths same time, I am somewhat terrified and feel a little unworthy to be in the position. I do not have the charisma or the vision of a Herb Clark. I do not have the unbridled enthusiasm or the endless energy of a Tom Jones. And I do not have the quiet knowledge and wisdom of a Lauren Matley, but I will tell you one thing for certain, I will work my butt off every day and into the night supporting this group of officers in their work keeping ARC the number one charter club in Sun City West and the best non-profit automotive/restoration club anywhere.

Happy New Year, and GOOD Bye to 2020! With the promise of returning to normal sometime soon, I strongly hope that we can use this time to get back to doing all of the things you wish you could have done while you were quarantined. Over
Thanksgiving my family did a “Zoom” call. Although I am not a “techie” we were able to see our family and grandkids and yes 8 great grandkids. It was a nice relief to the isolation.
The question came up, “If you could leave today, where would you go?” It immediately made me think of where I would go and what I was missing the most. First came family. Like many of you, my family has spread out and grown over the years. So, first would be an extended trip to visit family. If you are a regular reader of my articles, you might remember the trip I was planning about a year ago this month. I have been fortunate to have traveled to all 50 states. My wife still has 3 states to set foot on. They are Idaho, Washington and Oregon.
Our plans were to leave last April and take about a month to make a big loop out west and visit some family and friends, but most of the trip would have been sight seeing. Our trip would have ended up in SCW sometime in late May. As snowbirds we were always leaving in April, so this would be a great stop on our trek back to St. Louis for the summer.
The initial plan had us meeting up with some family and friends to traveling together at times. Some were our dear SCW friends. We love when we can get together and reminisce. We purchased a Corvette a couple of years ago to take the trip. We wanted to make it fun and make us feel younger??? Many of you know, I love history and Route 66. A few years ago I had the good fortune of leading a group of ARC Members on a Route 66 road trip across Arizona. I would love to do it again if anyone is interested!
Here is my challenge to the great Members of ARC. Plan some fun trip(s) this year! None of us are getting any younger and who knows what the future will be. What is it you haven’t done, but have had in your head for years? Part of the challenge is for the guys reading this to surprise your mate and ask them to sit down and plan some type of get away! Maybe it is a long weekend, a week or a month. Do something fun! Do it soon! The last part of the challenge is to write about your trip and send it to our Rusty Nuts editor, Ellen Zacko, and let us all know about your travels.
Lastly, I want EVERYONE to welcome our new ARC President Dean Lewellen. Dean (#100) and his wife, Elaine (#486), are longtime ARC members and have served the club unselfishly for years. Thanks Dean for stepping up and being our leader!!!

Mike Bannon is a lover of Fords. His first car was a 1950 four-door, 6 cylinder but he always wanted an eight cylinder flathead. In 2000, he found a 1947 super eight two-door with an eight cylinder, flathead, his dream car. With this car, he and his wife, Eileen, attended many car shows in the Tacoma, WA area and nearby towns.
Another love is Eileen, his wife. Their meeting is a true romance story. Mike comes from a military family. After graduating in 1965 he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Omaha, Nebraska After two years he volunteered for a tour in Vietnam. Trained as a Civil Engineer he built air bases in Phu Cat. When his tour was up he was discharged to Minot, North Dakota which didn’t suit Mike at all so he signed up for another tour just in time for the Tet Offensive. It was a very rough period.
Finally back in the United States in Washington D.C. Mike attended his sister’s wedding. Eileen was her maid of honor. In the two days that followed the two got to know each other well. Two months later back in Tacoma, Washington Mike decided he needed to marry her. He called her up and proposed. Of course she said yes and he mailed her an engagement ring. (Very romantic Mike). Upon receiving the ring, she took it to the base chaplain who put it on her finger. Four months later she had a change of heart, made a trip out to Tacoma and gave the ring back to Mike! He told her she should stay a little while and think about things. The second weekend Eileen and Mike decided to get married. They had a three day waiting period while Mike’s mother made Eileen a full length wedding dress. After a very small wedding, the next morning the couple headed to Michigan to meet Eileen’s family. They rushed back to Washington DC before Eileen was officially declared AWOL from the Air Force. That was fifty one and a half years ago.
The couple had twins in 1970 (Michael Edward and Eugenia) and Shelley in 1978. In 1980, after a six and a half year struggle, their son passed away from a health condition. The state cared for him during this time and was very good to the family.
To repay the state’s kindness, Mike joined the Fire Department in Graham, Washington. He later transferred to Pierce County Fire District. After thirty-four years of volunteering in Washington he is now Fire Corps Leader for the Sun City West Fire Department. Next March 31, 2021, will mark 45 years of Mike’s service.
Mike’s volunteer Fire Deparment training, made him instrumental in the installation of defibrillators in the new ARC building. He was also the driving force in the Fire Department classes for ARC members to learn CPR and the proper use of the new defibrillators.
This year Mike decided to finally part with his beloved car. He felt that between his responsibilities to ARC, the Fire Department and his other civic involvements, he was not giving the car the attention and love it deserved. He put the word out and it was immediately snapped up by a resident of SCW. “ I will continue to always be a proud member of ARC and the car will always be a big part of my life, but now she has a great new owner.”
Eileen and Mike are involved in the Lord of Life Church, Surprise Spring Training and volunteer for the events at the SCW Rec. Center. They live a happy and fulfilling life here in Sun City West.

The procedure for paying your 2021 ARC dues has been changed to reduce exposure to Covid-19 for the Members, the Membership Director, and the Treasurers. We are changing the annual dues paying process to a safer and easier method for everyone.
Using a PayPal email application, an “invoice” will be emailed to every member who has an email address in our system. For those without email, a hard copy of the invoice will be mailed to your address of record. If you receive a hard copy of the invoice and you do have an active email address, please let us know your email address. New Members who have joined since October 1, 2020 are not affected and will not receive an invoice.
On-line payments may be done through ARC’s PayPal account. Open the invoice you receive, click on the “View and Pay Invoice” button and complete it. Include your ARC membership number so your payment can be recorded properly. Each family member will receive a separate invoice which must be paid individually if you choose to pay your dues online.
If you wish to pay by check, you can mail your check along with a COMPLETED copy of the invoice addressed to the ARC Treasurer at PO Box 5034, Sun City West, AZ 85376-5034. Make your check payable to ARC of SCW and make sure that you put your ARC membership number/s on your check’s MEMO line.
If you wish to drop off your 2021 dues payment at the Shop, payment must be in the form of a check, NOT CASH, accompanied by a COMPLETED copy of the invoice. Put your check and invoice together in an envelope when dropping your dues payment off at the Shop. Again, make sure that you put your Club Member number/s on your check’s MEMO line.
Dues will NOT be payable in December 2020. PLEASE wait for your invoice which will be sent on or about January 2, 2021. Dues are the same as for this year, $35.00. Dues are payable through February 28, 2021 and become delinquent on March 1, 2021.
No “2021” stickers will be required on your badge. Current member information for ARC and RCSCW is contained in the bar code on your badge.
If you have any questions, please contact Paul Nordmeyer, Pete Mahnke or Dean Lewellen at the Shop.
Thank you for your cooperation on this important matter. Tom Jones

Rusty Nuts is the Monthly Newsletter of the Automotive/Restoration Club of Sun City West, AZ Like so many ARC members, Don was excited when ARC was in its early stages. He was one of the new members who stepped up and became involved when ARC was just an idea of a club. Soon he thought of a way to show his appreciation for Anna’s patience with him throughout their marriage. Anna has put up with his deep, deep love for cars. Don says, “I like cars and I like women, in that order” But then he met Anna and his life changed somewhat. As Anna says, “Gasoline, not blood, runs through Don’s veins.” Anna always understood and supported Don and his cars.
Don gifted money to ARC to help with the early growing pains for the building fund. With this gift he requested a beautiful courtyard be made which would be named Anna’s Courtyard. It is our space for our barbecue and other outside events. Anna wanted Don to be remembered in ARC as well and she created Don’s workshop and Don’s Bay. You can find these signs which are just inside the building. These generous gifts gave ARC a kick start in the beginning days.
It is good to know the background of our members. Don Scheidt was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He started working at a service station at age 13 and owned his own Texaco Station at age twenty-three. He would own two others over the next nine years. Don built a Midget and raced it at county fairs in western Iowa and Nebraska. He belonged to the Sports Car Club of America and raced Austin Healeys, in one of which he put a new Corvette #327 engine. Don eventually moved to Florida, bought a laundry and dry
cleaning business, and a brand new 62’ Corvette for $3,700. Don worked at the Daytona Race Track and drove his car on the race track once.

Rusty Nuts is the Monthly Newsletter of the Automotive/Restoration Club of Sun City West, AZ both. She lived with her parents and siblings in a Displaced Persons camp during the war, then lived a difficult life in Colombia, South America. Her family arrived in the United States in 1960. English was difficult but she learned and soon progressed. During her lifetime career she had many jobs and eventually made it as a Casualty/ Property Insurance underwriter. She also worked for one of Warren Buffett’s companies as an Excess and Surplus Lines Underwriter. Anna wrote, “Life’s
challenges have been the lessons providing opportunities not only to learn, but also to appreciate the gift of life.”
Don and Anna met at a dance and as Don says, “ We have been dancing
ever since.” They have a daughter named Donna after Don and Anna. The Scheidts retired to SCW and have lived here for many years. For the members of ARC we have found a touch of heaven in the generosity of the Scheidts. They show their love for their community in their actions and they will be long remembered. If it weren’t for the gasoline in Don’s veins and other ARC members, we would not be the special club we have become. We treasure the generosity and respect for community spirit

ONE LAST ATTEMPT
By
Dan Kuhl
As we all know Studebaker tried to make a go of it on their own. The automotive
industry was extremely competitive over the entire time of their existence. Over
and over again they tried to offer a product line with something to suit everyone’s
fancy.
In the late 20’s they brought in the Pierce Arrow to expand into the luxury line
that was so popular just before the Great Depression. World War II filled their
pockets with loot after they almost went out of business in the mid-thirties. After
the War you could make anything and it would sell to a starved buying market.
In the early 50’s the shrinking list of manufacturers created a market that
continued to be very competitive. The remaining manufacturers became more
innovative in their search for the most desirable product line. Studebaker was
looking at multiple options. First, join forces with Hudson and Nash to be a part of
a new American Motors that could better compete against the remaining Big
Three, and second, a joint venture with Porsche of Germany. However, reality
began to slap them in the face; the company was again on the verge of losing the
battle. They were forced to join forces with another great marque, Packard. But
this partnership did not solve their problems and they did not fully take advantage
of the Packard’s stellar reputation. It was at this time that Mercedes stepped into
the picture to offer their solution but again to no avail.
Studebaker soon learned that in corporate America the answer to longevity was
diversification, and that it would take a flexible and innovative product line to
succeed in the rapidly growing international automotive industry.
In December 1963 the situation was again dire, even with the exciting new
products like the Avanti and Lark-type styling created for 1964. Car production
was suffering because the factory was extremely old and the engineering in the
cars was outdated, and more importantly the diversification projects had been very
successful. The decision was made to close the doors at the South Bend plant
and move to the much smaller site in Hamilton Canada and produce automobiles
on a limited scale. The Hamilton move may not have been the best idea, but it
definitely was temporary, as it could not survive without its big brother in South
Rusty Nuts is the Monthly Newsletter of the Automotive/Restoration Club of Sun City West, AZ
Bend. In short order Studebaker of Canada was looking for a new partner
and found a potential suitor in the Japanese company Isuzu, manufacturer of
the Bellet. Isuzu was one of the many foreign companies trying to make
inroads into the US and Canada market. The partnership fell through when
one of the investors got cold feet. The rest is history as the Hamilton factory
was closed in March 1966. Today Isuzu no longer makes cars but is noted
for its diesel engine factory in Plymouth, MI.
The question a Studebaker aficionado needs to ask : If Studebaker had
continued, could I be happy with a front-wheel drive, plastic ridden
Studebaker manufactured in a modern facility totally committed to computer
operated robots? I say no; I am happy with the Studebakers we have, frozen
in time and memory; Studebakers that have not been tarnished by the
demands of our modern economy but having a polish that will hold a place
in the richness of our nation’s beloved transportation history.

The 9th Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life event originally scheduled at
Beardsley Park on Sunday, February 21, has had to change plans due to Covid-19. As with everything this year, this is very disappointing, since funds are badly needed to help with Cancer Research, as well as helping patients going through this dreadful disease. WE WILL STILL BE HOLDING A FUNDRAISER!
A drive-thru event will be held at the SCW Foundation on the corner of R.H. Johnson and Stardust on the same date from 3:00-5:00. Cars will be able to drive thru the parking lot and drop off monetary donations. We can’t have our usual Survivor Victory Lap, but will be passing out gift bags to survivors. (In 2020, ARC had over 20 survivors on our team.) We will also be accepting food donations for the Valley View Food Bank. In previous years, we have collected canned good to hold the luminaria bags down. As you know, food banks are more in need of donations now than ever before. We have been able to give them around 700 pounds of food each year, and hope to do that again.
ARC is already signed up with Steve Victor as Captain. We have many members fighting cancer right now, and unfortunately, have lost several of our members this year, as well as past years. We are still committed to do some fundraising for this great cause. Last year, ARC was able to raise over $4,000 for the event.
We hope you can help the ARC Team. Join the team and encourage family and friends to donate to your cause. Sign up as a survivor.
You can sign up on line, or……there will be a folder at the monitor desk at the building after the first of the year. Fill out the form, and we will sign you up. You can also drop off donations of money or food at the building.
We have asked for some cars to park in the parking lot on the Johnson side to attract
attention to the event. Of course, you can drive thru on the 21st and drop off your donations of
money or food. Please designate that you are part of the ARC groupl
