THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

11:00 am January 24, 2021 Fishers of Men AS WE GATHER

Today, we recall how Jesus found and called Peter, Andrew, James, and John to be His disciples. “Fishers of men,” He said. He called them to follow Him as He was passing by them on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. We also remember how Jesus found a man named Saul, an infamous enemy of Christ and His Christians. His call wasn’t as “peaceful” as with the others but with a blinding flash from heaven. We also hear of God’s call to Jonah in the Old Testament and how, after trying to run away, he was given a second chance. Before he became a “fisher of men,” he literally became fish bait! God calls us both to salvation for ourselves and to be fellow anglers speaking God’s grace to others.

WELCOME – Pastor Chris Fairbairn

INVOCATION

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES Jonah 2:2, 7

Pastor: I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, People: and You heard my voice.

Pastor: When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, People: and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Jonah 3:10

Pastor: Repent! Turn around! Quit going your own way lest you drown in your own desires. Thus says the Lord of the second chance.

People: O God, we acknowledge and admit our neglect of You and our desire to shut You out of our life. Our sin often overwhelms even our best intentions. Remembering our Baptism and Your power to drown the old sinful nature, we ask You to bring forth a new person in us

through the resurrection of Christ. Hear us, receive us, wash us, and restore us to be the chosen possession of Your great love. Amen. Pastor: “When God saw how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the

disaster that He had said He would do to them, and He did not do it.” Because of Christ, “The Lord is good to all, and His mercy is over all that He has made.” all your sins in the name of the Father and of  the Son

and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Pastor: Almighty and everlasting God, you are awesome in power and wide in your mercy. Bring us to true repentance, fill us with faith in Your Word, and send us to share Your love with the whole world; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

FIRST READING Jonah 3:1-5, 10 (God relents of the threats of His justice.)

Reader: 1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

People: 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh.

Reader: Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”

People: 5 The Ninevites believed God.

Reader: A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God!

Children’s Message

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:14-20 (Jesus invites His followers to become fishers of men.) Reader: 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the

good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God

has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother

(5)

People: 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

Reader: 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his

brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called

them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He

ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor: In a world that is in desperate need for repentance and salvation, let us pray for one another and for all who are in need.

Lord God, almighty Father, receive our praise and thanksgiving for Your great love shown to the world in Your Word, calling all to repentance,

(8)

giving all a second chance at life by a new birth by Your Spirit. May You be praised by all nations in the revelation of Yourself through Jesus, Your only Son. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: As You called and sent Jonah and Your holy prophets, Peter, Andrew, James, John, Paul, and Your blessed apostles, so continue to call and send pastors and workers in Your kingdom in our day that many may hear, receive, and believe Your Word of grace and salvation. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Let the nations praise You, O God, let all the nations praise You. Guide and direct the minds and hearts of all leaders in government that peace may prevail, evil be punished, and good rewarded. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Your heart, O God, is moved by Your great love, especially for all who struggle with sin and sickness. We pray for all in need of Your healing, for all who cannot defend themselves, and for all who mourn. Comfort them with a word of Your grace and power to save. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: No greater love do we know than in the sacrifice of Jesus, His body and blood given and shed on the cross. Open our hearts and our mouths to receive forgiveness, love, and strength through this Sacrament and be given strength to confess Jesus as the only Savior of the world. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

For the month of January, Women in Christ is highlighting a $15,000 grant entitled, “Filling Haitian Tummies Opens Ears to the Gospel.” Trinity HOPE in Franklin, Tennessee, hosts a feeding ministry, based on the premise that children must first be nourished physically so to be enabled to be nourished with God’s word and concentrate on learning. Please thank God for this ministry and add coins to your MITE box. January is one of four times this year that Women in Christ will be collecting MITE boxes.

Sunday School Corner is Back!!!

Hello church family we wanted to let you know what is going on in Sunday school these days. We are starting a new series from Right now Media “What in the Bible?”. Buck Denver and his friends take your children through the WHOLE Bible. Perfect viewing for the entire family—laugh and learn together. In his first new project since VeggieTales, Phil Vischer has set out to teach kids (and parents!) the story of the Bible—God's great rescue plan! We know the stories of Moses, Noah, David, and Jesus, but in this groundbreaking new series, we learn how they all fit together to tell one big, redemptive story. Vischer's signature wit shines through with his all-new cast of characters, fast-paced flash animation, and catchy tunes. This is one journey through the Bible you will not want to miss!

Last Sunday they learned how the Bible is it put together. They learned the different names and how it is divided into two parts and who wrote them. They even learned what the “Septuagint “is. A good discussion question around the dining room table tonight.

Today, they will learn how the first part of Genesis sets the stage for the rest of the Bible—and all of history! Another good family discussion tonight. When was night created?

“Blessing Bag Central” (Located in the Church Parish Hall – back room)

You may be asking, “What is a blessing bag?”

Blessing bags are bags filled with hygiene and related items to those that are homeless, families living below the poverty level, senior citizens that live by themselves and children that are in need.

Below are some items that we typically look for in our blessing bags. All items are either travel size, hotel sized or sample sized.

Personal Hygiene • Toothbrush • Toothpaste • Mouthwash Dental Floss • Hand Lotion • Lip Baum • SPF Sunblock • Travel shampoo/conditioner • Deodorant • Eye drops • Disposable razor • Shaving Cream • Comb or hairbrush • Q-tips • Razors • Shaving Cream

Toiletries Kits (People often overlook various

toiletries kits for homeless, families in need and seniors. We try to put them into almost all of our Blessing Bags)

• Feminine products

• Anti bacterial hand cleaner

• Band-aids • Wipes Snacks/Foods • Chewing gum • Granola Bars • Energy Bars • Tuna/cracker packs • Trail mix • Raisins • Peanuts

• Fruit cup/ applesauce cup (& • include a spoon)

(15)

How can you help?

• Donate items listed above, drop off at our “closet” or the church office.

• Have your group, family, board etc. assemble bags, directions listed in the closet.

• Deliver bags to those in need. Call the church office for information of those needing bags.

Blessing Bags are currently distributed weekly to the homeless and low income across Detroit 3 times a week.

This is a YEAR ROUND project- Bag contents “change” as the weather does, i.e. we may request

donations of sun screen, other times gloves.

*Notes of encouragement are also very needed*

** CURRENTLY : Assembled are bags in the parish hall for, members to take, (40 c) to a non- profit on

the east side of Detroit “Mutual Aid Foundation” that does street outreach and “Family of God” the

men’s bible study- Last week 40 bags went out to “Ellis’ House” a non-profit supported by the LCMS that serves people who have been involved in human trafficking and want to leave that life.

Many hands go into providing for these bags- members have knit scarves, hats and blankets. Community members have provided hygiene items by using their “credit card points”. Church members have used Thrivent grants to buy boots. Members and Community members buy in bulk at Costco or catch a sale at Kohls. A senior center knitting group made scarves. Another church in the LCMS made scarves and assembled hygiene packages. Another non-profit for Detroiters supplied coats and sweat shirts. It takes an army to help the many less fortunate on the streets! We are glad to be a part of that!
