Plan Analysis &

‘Getting Started’

Presented by Maci McDaniel The Nelrod Company

• Rating Scale is from 0 to 100

• Model Energy Code, 1993 (MEC) Rating = 80, IECC = 83

• Energy Star Rating = 86 + 15% Above the IECC • Each Rating Point is Equal to 5% More Energy

Efficiency

• 80 to 86 = 6 points = 30% More Efficient than the MEC

H.E.R.S. Home Energy

Rating System

(37)

• 30% more efficient than the Model Energy

Code (MEC) and at least 15% More

Efficient than the IRC and IECC Code

• Performance Tested

What Is An ENERGY

STAR Home?

(38)

Plan Analysis – First Step

• HERS Rating – Energy Star = 86 + 15% Above the IECC – Measured by REM Rate Software

• Review Plan and Do Take-off for Square Footage,

Window/Door Sizes, Ceilings Heights, Wall Area, etc. • Complete a Builder Profile –Materials Used to Construct

the Home, i.e. types of Insulation, Window Values, HVAC & Water Heater Equipment Efficiency Ratings, etc.

• Recommendations on What to do if Plan does not Pass • Builder Option Packages (BOPs) – Prescriptive Method

Based on Window to Wall Ratio

• Energy Efficient Mortgage Reports also Calculated by REM Rate

(39)

Energy Efficiency for

Existing Homes

• Option 1: Energy Efficiency Audits to determine current conditions. Recommendation made to

increase performance based on cost effectiveness for the home owner

• Option 2: Rating done to document the existing condition of the home. Rater makes

recommendations on upgrades in building materials and equipment to reach desired

efficiency. Primarily used to obtain and Energy Efficient Mortgage to finance Improvements in a Home Re-Finance situation.
