OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.
Dear Holy Easter People of God:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus announces his unconditional love’s blue print; he said:
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love… [because] no one has great-er love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends…”
Humanity isn’t change for the better by violence, but by a total-self-giving-love. And Jesus has delivered us this total-self-giving-love, when he said: “I love you… No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”.
For love, Jesus died on the cross for you and me – for all of us. No exception. Everyone is account-ed for. This total self-giving-loving-action isn’t superficial but real and concrete. It’s a maccount-edicine or vaccine if you will - that saves lives, gives hope, heals wounds, shows the path of forgiveness, creates peace in our hearts, and helps make this world more livable for present and future genera-tions.
And when a person emulate unselfishly Jesus’ radical action, certainly – a chain of love will be created: from Jesus to your heart; from your heart to your neighbor’s heart, and back again to its source, Jesus. Then Jesus will replenish that love with much energy so that when it will return to you, it will be life-giving. And you become “visible signs of Jesus’ love!”
So, when you journey into the crossroads of life’s struggles and misfortunes, trust Jesus and cling to his promising words:
“I love you… No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends…”
My prayer for you is: believe that you’re Jesus’ friend – yesterday, today and tomorrow! And also trust that he will offer his life for you a thousand times, only to make you happy and always be the person created in the image and likeness of God.
And today, let us create a special place in our hearts for our “mothers” as we celebrate “MOTHER’S DAY!” Beloved “mothers” - Fr. Joseph, Fr. Mike and myself will offer our Masses today for all of you! Remember, “We love you!”
Blessings,

THE PRESENCE OF THE
HOLY SPIRIT
We have a unique episode in the
Acts of the Apostles today. A whole
roomful of people are baptized with
the Holy Spirit before they are
baptized with water! The verb used—
“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them” (Acts
10:44)—is characteristic of the way
the Spirit works throughout the book
of Acts: powerful and surprising.
Though this “baptism” is not the
normative way the New Testament
describes baptism, it is still a good
reminder today that the Holy Spirit is
not controlled by whether or not we
pour water, but rather that our
sacramental signs reveal the
presence of the Spirit at work among
us. And we have a double
reinforcement of how this work is
accomplished from a Letter and a
Gospel bearing John’s name. It is
love, self-sacrificing and self-giving
love, that manifests the Spirit of
Jesus in our midst. It is love that is
the greatest of commandments. The
Spirit is manifested equally through
those who live in that love.

Remain
In My
LOVE
T
HIS WEEK’S GOSPELpicks upwhere last week’s left off, and we hear Jesus continuing to teach us the metaphor of the vine and the branches. And like last week, the First Reading is an example in the early Church of what happens when we remain on the vine. While this week is certainly a deepening of last week’s themes, there is at least one new dimension. In the First Reading, we see another Pentecost take place when Peter preaches the Gospel to the first Gentiles. We see Peter’s life bearing much fruit in all of these new believers, but we also see Peter as the head of the Church discerning God’s will in that moment. Because Peter, and thus the Church, was attached to the vine, he was able to perceive the new movement of the Holy Spirit to welcome Gentiles into the new covenant.
The Catholic Church plays a vital role in our ability to remain on the vine throughout all of history. As new circumstances arise, God has given us the gift of the Church to help us recognize where his love is so that we can remain with him. We know that God does not ask anything from us without giving us the grace to respond, and that grace always flows through his Church so that we can be assured that we are truly following him in all truth.
D
ISCUSSION: Please watch thisweek's Opening the Word video at
sptacc.formed.org Most of us
probably think that something like
Pentecost was only meant to happen once—the Holy Spirit coming down upon the Apostles, the gift of tongues, and Peter preaching the Gospel and converting 3,000 people all at once. But in the First Reading for today we see a very similar thing happen, the scene plays like a second Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is poured out on the Gentiles, and they speak in tongues and glorify the Lord.
What has your relationship with the Holy Spirit been like? Is He a Person of the Blessed Trinity you spend much time with? Does this image of the Church challenge your notion of what it means to be a disciple and bear fruit?
P
RAYER: Return to the Gospel fortoday. Jesus continues teaching us the metaphor of the vine and the branches, emphasizing that he is telling us these things so that our joy will be complete. He knows how he made us and that we are destined to be in perfect communion with God and one another, and he offers it to us freely if we will only remain in his love! Take the word that comes to mind and reflect on what it means to you personally. For example, the phrase “I have told you everything I have heard from my Father” might have stuck out to you. Ask yourself what this means in your own life. Is Jesus encouraging you that it is indeed him speaking through the Church through the ages, even now, to tell you all that he has heard from the Father?
R
ESOLUTION: This week we realize an even deeper dimension of the metaphor of remaining on the vine. Jesus has given us the gift of his Church so that we can be assured that we are remaining with him in all truth. To live out our lives of faith attached to the Church is to remain with Jesus. The Catechism teaches us that “‘The Church’ is the People that God gathers in the whole world. She exists in local communities and is made real as a liturgical, above all a Eucharistic, assembly. She draws her life from the word and the Body of Christ and so herself becomes Christ’s Body.”Here we see that to remain with the Church is to above all remain with the Eucharist. This is the spiritual food that attaches us to the vine. As the branch is one with the vine, so we become one with Christ in his gift of the Eucharist that unites us as one Church.
How can you live a more Eucharistic life this week?

E
l amor.
