We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love.
We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.
Dear St. Paul Family and Friends,
In our Gospel this weekend, we find the miraculous healing of a deaf man who had a speech impediment. Jesus healed him and the healing took place through what seems to be a seven ritual-like steps: 1) He took him off by himself away from the crowd; 2) He put his finger into the man’s ears; 3) He spit on his hands; 4) He touched the man’s tongue; 5) He looked up to heaven; 6) He groaned; and 7) He said: Ephphatha – Be opened! The man was able to speak plainly.
What is also striking in this Gospel is the line: “And people brought to him a deaf man… and begged him to lay his hand on him.” The people advocated for this man’s cure. They spoke to Jesus on his behalf. They actively bridged the man with Jesus.
Many today cannot speak for themselves. Babies in the womb of their mothers cannot speak yet. They need us to speak on their behalf. They need to be protect- ed from a society that attempts to silence them, to disregard them, or to get rid of them. The challenged and handicapped members of our community oftentimes cannot fully speak for themselves. Their physical or mental situations may impede them from doing so. We are to care for them as well. When they come to church, we need to make them feel that they are welcome. They have different needs and we need to be sensitive to them. I invite you to be extra warm and hospitable to them, and to give them a loving gaze.
Last weekend, we installed the members of our Parish Pastoral Council at the Sunday 5:00 p.m. Mass. (Their pictures are on the wall leading to the hall). The purpose of the Council is to collaborate with me in developing and fulfilling the vision and direction of the parish, to act as a consultative body for the establish- ment of the pastoral policies of the parish, and to listen to the concerns of the parishioners and voice them out to me. I thank them for generously offering their time, talents, and treasures. But this highlights the importance of having a body to speak on your behalf, and to do so in a respectful, loving, proper, and proactive manner, just as how Jesus lovingly protected the deaf man from embarrassment and judgment by taking him off by himself away from the crowd.

thLetter to the Parish:
I want to take a moment to thank the entire parish for the support and friendship I have received throughout my twenty years at St. Paul the Apostle. I am retiring and looking forward to slowing down, perhaps traveling a little, and just being present to family and friends. In that light, I want to introduce two newcomers to the Catechetical Ministry Office.
Coordinator of Catechetical Ministry –Elementary (CCM): Belen Luna. Belen joined us earlier in August and will be handling all the elementary level catechesis, both in person or virtu- al. This includes all levels of sacrament preparation except for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
She comes to us from the LA Diocese with many years experience. Her office will be at the Ministry Center and I know that soon she will be a familiar face to all.
Director of Catechetical Ministry (DCM): John Koss will be replacing me in the director role. He has a degree in Theology from Loyola Marymount University and is fully versed in Liturgy, Sacred Music and Catechesis. John has attended all the required Diocesan advance level courses for Master Catechist that make him well suited to the role of director. He too will have his office at the Ministry Center. Please welcome him!
It has truly been an honor to serve the people of God here at St. Paul the Apostle. Always keep in your hearts just how much Jesus loves you. Blessings, Jeanie Kiefer

H
ave you ever been so sick that you needed to rely on a family member or a friend to help you get to the doctor? Sometimes, we are unable to be healed on our own.We need someone else to bring us. Today we will read about a man who was brought to Jesus and how grateful he was to those who loved him enough to present him before the Divine Physician.
D
ISCUSSION: Please watch this week's Opening the Word video at sptacc.formed.org …Consider discussing these questions with a friend this week, or write your thoughts in a journal.
• What do you fear? What causes you to be anxious?
• Do you struggle with judgment on external appearances, or do you look at everyone as created with equal dignity in the image and likeness of God?
D
IGGING DEEPER: Going Away with Jesus. The most challenging part of allowing Christ to heal us is actually allowing it to happen. It usually does not happen overnight and can be painful, just like recovering from surgery can be incredibly painful. Jesus took the man away from the others in order to heal him. Christ takes us away from what makes us comfortable, away from our past, away from the crutch of bad habits, so that he may purge us from our sins and give us true freedom in his love. As painful as it may be to reject our bad habits, do not be afraid to follow Christ where he asks you to go. You will not be alone, he is with you.P
RAYER: Some people bring a sick man to Jesus in today’s healing story. Jesus receives the sick man on behalf of the people who bring him. Notice the great faith of those who brought the man to Jesus: they did not ask Jesus to heal him specifically, but trusted him to the Great Physician. Who do you need to bring to Jesus for healing? Do you need healing yourself? Do you not trust Jesus to heal the wounds of the world, but rather attempt to fix everything yourself?
Let’s take a few minutes now to be in the place of the man who is healed. He has not been able to hear his entire life, nor does he have the ability to speak well.
Jesus’s actions must seem very strange to you. But then, the unthinkable happens: you hear people’s voices, you hear leaves in the wind and birds going about their day. Jesus has just opened a world you never experienced before. What an amazing gift! How has Jesus healed you of something that you did not even know needed healing? How has he opened your eyes to experience life anew?
R
ESOLUTION: How did God move your heart as you reflected on today’s Gospel? Was it with inspiration and hope for a friend who needs to be brought to Jesus? Then bring them to Jesus! Commit to openness to the action of Jesus in your life. Ask him to touch the areas that most need his healing, and then let him do the rest.
