Job Description

Job Title: Electronics Technician

Department: (027) Maintenance

Location: (74) Insteel Wire Products, Jacksonville, FL

Reports to: Maintenance Manager

FLSA Status: Hourly/Nonexempt

SUMMARY

Installs, maintains, trouble shoots, and repairs electrical and mechanical systems, apparatus, and electrical/electronic and mechanical components of industrial machinery and equipment. Provides technical support for the Maintenance Manager, plant, and all maintenance personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Other duties may be assigned.

Level A

 Safety awareness

 Basic troubleshooting and replacement of AC – DC drives and motors

 Knowledge of all plant equipment with ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical issues as needed

 Travels for training and to support engineering as needed

 Attends job-related training seminars/classes with approval of manager  Self-motivated

Level B

 Troubleshoots and replaces boards, capacitors, or other components inside drives.

 Assists maintenance manager and engineering on upgrades or modifications to plant equipment  Connects to machine-components with a computer to provide diagnostics, trouble-shooting, and

fault rectification

 Develops knowledge about repair/cost control decision making when replacing/repairing electrical controls

 Installs and commissions on a basic VFD/motor system using a drive keypad

Level C

 Component level troubleshooting and repair of electronic boards

 Designs, documents and implements upgrades or modifications to plant equipment

 Installs and commissions an advanced VFD/motor system using drive software/PC connection  Provides detailed recommendations to engineering for process-changes to enhance machinery

 Navigates and understands all aspects of automated machinery control computers, PLS, VLC, and Step7

Level D

 Remains current on all OSHA, Arc Flash, and LO/TO procedures and updates as required  Supports, trains, mentors electrical staffing

 Requisitions tools, parts, and equipment as directed  Maintains proper logs and records on all equipment.  Maintains time and maintenance records as required.

 Provides technical support in the selection of components for upgrades.  Maintains all required Maximo Data

Level E

 Creates and maintains electrical drawings and schematics

 Plans layout and functions of controls, wiring, plumbing, systems, and power distribution  Inspects completed work for conformance to drawings, specifications, and safety

 Initiates and suggest plans to improve electrical equipment performance.

 Provides training recommendations for self and maintenance personnel to Plant Engineer.  Directs tests and diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus such as Programmable Logic Control

Programs, DC drives, AC drives, motors.

 Directs the repair and replacement of malfunctioning apparatus listed above as required.  Provides support for special projects including, but not limited to, component selection, controls

recommendations, vendor recommendations, and installation.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

The education requirements and experience requirement listed here indicate the minimum basic educational knowledge and minimum previous work-related experience required by the job duties of the position.

Education:

Technical training (high school + 1-2 years applied trades training) in relation to PLC programs, DC and AC drive motors is required.

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years electronic technician experience plus

An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be acceptable.

EQUIPMENT USED

Responsible for total set-up, adjustment, operation and/or maintenance of equipment where errors would result in extensive damages and expenses.

Continuously (70-100%):

Machinery such as production machinery with ancillary equipment with responsibility for setups, adjustments, and maintenance.

Testing/Measuring devices such as multimeter, caliper, megar, micrometer and tape measure.

Frequently (30-70%):

Hand tools

Occasionally (Up to 30%):

Vehicles/Heavy Equipment such as forklift, manlift with responsibility for repair and maintenance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is responsible for minimizing accidents within the facility and for following established safety policies and procedures during performance of this job.
