International orientation
KU Leuven is home to a vibrant community of international scholars. 15.5% of the university’s 40,000 students are international, coming from 140 countries. KU Leuven’s Doctoral Schools provide internationally oriented PhD tracks for more than 4,000 doctoral students. The International Admissions and Mobility Unit coordinates admissions, orientation, intercultural guidance and social activities for international scholars.“Leuven is a very
internationally oriented
city with an open spirit.
The city is always alive
-a re-al student town.”
Dennis, doctoral student in electrical engineering from Taiwan
Founded in 1425, the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) has been a centre of learning
for almost six centuries. Today, it is Belgium’s largest and highest-ranked university
as well as one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe.
As a leading European research university and co-founder of the League of European
Research Universities (LERU), KU Leuven offers a wide variety of programmes in English
supported by high-quality interdisciplinary research carried out at both the university
and its internationally acclaimed hospitals. Boasting an outstanding central location,
KU Leuven offers a truly international experience, high-quality education, world-class
research and cutting-edge innovation.
Leuven: a knowledge nexus
KU Leuven is located in the city of Leuven in the region of Flanders, the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. Leuven is a modern, bustling and safe student city with a long and rich history. Cultural and recreational opportunities abound. The city’s central location offers a truly international experience. Major European capitals such as Brussels, Paris, London and Amsterdam are only a (very) short train journey away.Leuven’s concentration of brain capital, its excellent
infrastructure and its convenient location in the heart of Europe create an exciting and creative climate for research and innovation. Leuven has established itself as one of Europe’s technology hot-spots and, together with Cambridge and Heidelberg, is part of Health Axis Europe, an alliance dedicated to stimulating innovation and competition in healthcare technology.
Campuses across Flanders
Since its founding, KU Leuven had been geographically centred in the city that shares its name. Following the Bologna Process of 1999, the landscape changed. In October 2013, the academic degree programmes of 9 partner institutions will integrate into the university. KU Leuven will thus offer degree programmes at campuses in 11 cities, including Brussels. In total, 42 degree programmes – representing 13,000 students and 1,200 staff members – are integrating. 11 of theseprogrammes – taught at six KU Leuven campuses (see map below) – are offered in English.

Science, Engineering and Technology
Doctoral Schools
The Arenberg Doctoral School of Science, Engineering and Technologystimulates doctoral researchers in their endeavour to acquire scientific and technological knowledge in a four-year PhD track. We do this not only by providing a stimulating research environment, but also by ensuring that our PhD students optimally develop the personal and professional skills needed to further develop a career. Our PhD students become researchers with the confidence and pride of a professional and develop an ability to conduct research and establish collaborations both within academia and with external private and public partners. Our PhD students advance the frontiers of knowledge and combine this scientific endeavour with valuable professional experience.
Our research topics span all fields of science and technology, including the Life Sciences, Computing and Information Science, Environmental Sustainability, Human Settlements, Agriculture, Food Research, Genomics and Biomaterials, Nanoscience and Nanofabrication, Advanced Materials, Energy and Optimisation in Engineering.

Biomedical Sciences
Humanities and Social Sciences
TheLeuven International Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciencesis a lively community of over 950 PhD students, 250 doctoral advisors and a dedicated administrative staff. Together, we strive to:
n Train biomedical researchers to explore the fundamentals of living systems at all levels – from gene to cell, body and mind – and to leverage that knowledge to improve human health. By nurturing today's researchers, the Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences contributes to tomorrow’s healthier world.
n Provide an integrated framework for doctoral training that includes basic biomedical research, clinical research and public health research. We believe in cross-fertilisation across disciplines and technologies, and between health care professionals and scientists. We encourage PhD students to dynamically explore the link between health and disease.
n Give PhD students the opportunity to follow the doctoral training curriculum, which provides not only academic but also technical, communicative, personal and other skills needed to successfully complete a doctoral project.
Research-based training is the core of our doctoral education. In addition, formal and informal teaching via seminars, workshops and other course components is also provided. These skills are transferable and prepare PhD students for a future career inside or outside academia.
n Offer career perspectives for doctoral graduates in different sectors. Researchers aspiring to a career in biomedical sciences will find that Leuven provides a stimulating environment in which to fulfil their academic and professional goals.
The Leuven International Doctoral School of Biomedical Sciences offers eleven thematic programmes and awards doctoral degrees in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences & Physiotherapy, and Kinesiology.

The Leuven International Doctoral School for the Humanities and Social Sciencesoffers internationally oriented doctoral training programmes in a wide range of domains, e.g. Philosophy, Psychology, Theology, Law and Criminology, Educational Studies, Economics and Business Economics, Arts and Social Sciences. PhD students at KU Leuven benefit from high-quality instruction and support nurtured by high-level international research. Our PhD students pursue a doctoral curriculum tailored to their research interests and professional goals. Students have access to our outstanding research facilities and receive guidance from top researchers.
The Doctoral School for the Humanities and Social Sciences provides courses and seminars geared toward developing our PhDs’ academic, professional, communicative, technical and leadership skills. Our goal is to educate young scholars with an open, inquisitive and critical view of the world and its societies. A doctoral education from KU Leuven prepares PhDs to assume their place in and responsibility toward society, both in and beyond the academic world. Increasingly, our graduates begin successful careers outside of academia in sectors such as international business, public policy, NGO’s, journalism, communications and elsewhere.

Tuition fees
The Flemish Government’s generous co-financing system ensures that tuition fees for Bachelor’s and initial Master’s programmes remain relatively low: €596.30 per academic year (subject to change without notice). In most cases, international students pay the same tuition as Belgian students. At GroupT fees are higher for non-European Economic Area students. Fees for advanced or specialised Master’s programmes range from €1000 to €8000 (subject to change without notice).
uwww.kuleuven.be/tuitionfees
Scholarships
For certain programmes eligible candidates can apply for an Erasmus Mundus or VLIR-UOS scholarship. The EU-funded Erasmus Mundus programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic cooperation. VLIR-UOS, the Flemish Interuniversity Council for Development Cooperation, awards scholarships to students from developing countries to follow one of the International Course Programmes (ICPs) offered at KU Leuven.

Housing
Leuven offers a wide range of housing options at reasonable prices. Most students choose to rent a room (a ‘kot’) in a privately-owned student house with shared common spaces and facilities. The University Housing Office offers assistance regarding housing. The university owns and manages a number of student residences but space is limited. Only international students holding specific scholarships are eligible for rooms in subsidised university residences.
