Benefits of Higher Education

at your local campus

You can remain living at home hence limited travel expenses.

Many students need to keep their part-time job to either gain vital experience or fund their education. Expenses are limited due to extra costs being reduced such as rent, electricity, food etc.

Northern Regional College offers students one to one contact within smaller classes and tutorial sessions giving the student the attention they need to progress in their course. The college offers students excellent levels of qualifications which can lead to University entrance for Degree programmes at University (year 2) or Employment.

The college has excellent industrial links with local, national and international employers who provide students with valuable presentations, visits and placement opportunities.

Ulster University Validated Courses (Foundation Degrees)

Higher Education students studying Ulster University validated programmes at NRC can enjoy associate student rights e.g. NRC HE students will have access to the University’s sports centre facilities at student membership rates and enjoy the same library resources borrowing rights as Ulster University students. You can apply to NRC alongside your other UCAS applications. NRC does not operate through UCAS so this would be an extra application.

At NRC we guarantee your tuition fees will be no more than £1510 for all Full-time Higher Education Courses. There are no top up fees.

The Northern Regional College has created a great way to keep in touch with the college and the fantastic friends you made during your time at NRC.

Study USA Programme

Students at the college can stand out from the crowd by studying for one academic year in the USA.

Study USA (SUSA) is a scholarship to

study business related subjects at a US College for one academic year. The programme is administered by the Department for Employment and Learning and delivered by the British Council. Study USA aims to equip Northern Irish students with international experience and essential business skills, and to raise the profile of Northern Ireland in the United States.

Over 200 participating colleges across USA offer fully funded places worth $25000 covering travel, accommodation, books, meals etc.

Odhran Kelly

Odhran Kelly (Level 5 Engineering Student) spent 11 months in Montana (Great Falls) on the Study USA programme from Sept 2013 to Aug 2014. The year was fully funded and worth $25,000. Odhran had the most fantastic time meeting new people and learning about business. He spent the 11 months at University of Great Falls where he studied Business including Business Law, Micro-Economics and even got to study Snow Boarding!!

During his time in USA Odhran got to spend 1 week in Las Vegas, 1 week in Salt Lake City and also 2 weeks visiting friends over Xmas 2013 in Vancouver, Canada. Odhran spent time visiting the great national parks and got to try ice-fishing! He enjoyed the experience so much that he will return to Montana Xmas 2014 to reconnect with the many friends that he made there and might even have the chance to do a bit more snow-boarding. The trip was an experience of a life-time for Odhran and he fully recommends that anyone studying a Level 5 programme at NRC takes advantage of this great opportunity.

Nathan Gilmore

Nathan Gilmore is a past student of Cambridge House Grammar and has completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering with three distinctions. He is currently studying the Level 5 BTEC HND Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering at the college and hope to pursue full-time employment

within the Manufacturing field or progress to a Degree in Manufacturing Engineering. Nathan is passionate about his area of study and encouraged other students to be organised and effective in time management in order to complete the course.

Nathan has completed his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and also works part-time in the community. He recently travelled to Prague in June to represent the college and the UK in the RACE (Robotics and Automation Careers in Engineering) Project funded by the European Commission.

Apprenticeship in Advanced

Manufacturing Engineering

(Subject to DEL Funding)

Ballymena

Northern Regional College under ApprenticeshipsNI is offering a NEW PILOT Higher Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (at Level 4). This programme

has been designed to provide the manufacturing and engineering sector in Northern Ireland with high grade technicians and engineers who have practical skills, combined with a higher education qualification. The programme will facilitate progression for a Level 3 Apprenticeship and could also encourage future progression to Level 6 qualifications and enable apprentices to work towards Incorporated Engineer status. The employer will also receive an employer incentive depending on the age of the apprentice and the full attainment of the framework. Depending on the competency based NVQ modules chosen, the framework covers a wide range of job roles in advanced manufacturing and engineering which broadly fit into the higher-level skills requirements for differing sectors, however the pilot programme being offered by DEL in Northern Ireland will most likely follow the Engineering Manufacture or Engineering Maintenance routes for the moment.

The competence and knowledge qualifications in this framework contribute to general competence as measured in the Engineering Council’s UK specification and are endorsed by IMechE, IET and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

If you have Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering, an A-level profile (with STEM subjects) or equivalent qualifications, there may also be opportunities for you, should a company employ you as an apprentice, to further your career. Over the course of the programme you will undertake the following alongside your employment: • Level 5 Foundation Degree in

Engineering (details on page 28) • NVQ 4 in Engineering Manufacture • NVQ 2 in Performing Engineering

Operations (subject to

Accreditation of Prior Learning) • NVQ 3 in a subject specific to

Why study a Placement Year?

I wanted to expand my understanding of engineering and the engineering industry, allowing me to find out what is really needed to attain a job once I finish my HND. I wanted to experience a real engineering work environment which would hopefully give me the chance to apply some of the theoretical knowledge gained from my first year of college expanding on my practical abilities and finding out more about electrical equipment used within industry. I can now include a one year work experience on my C.V. I received one full years pay to help with the financial costs of college.

My placement

I was a member of the Automation Department and had several key roles throughout my placement year: • In charge of the Technical Files

for new projects undertaken (electrical aspects)

• Electrical component selection and procurement

• Design of electrical schematics • Construction of the Electrical

Enclosure/ machine installation

Placement Outcomes

I worked on many new pieces of equipment which I would not have been able to if I had not been on placement. I have widened my knowledge within many new PLC languages gaining lots of hands on practical experience in industry. I was able to take part in the Undergraduate Development Program, a great experience which gave me 2 new qualifications/ achievements to put onto my C.V. On completing my placement I have more motivation to achieve a top grade in my HND.

Student Profile

Jonathan Purdy

Why study a Placement Year?

I applied for a placement to gain experience in the manufacturing field as this is the route in which I want to pursue my career. I would recommend a placement to any Level 5 student as I have gained extensive knowledge in the design and manufacturing of buses within the hybrid department in which I worked in Wrightbus.

My Placement

My role in WrightBus consisted of mainly design work, including framework and bracketry for components on the prototype electric bus. Also I got the opportunity to design copper pipe work for heating systems and electrical panel work. Away from the design I gained knowledge in bills of materials (BOM) and the documentation of drawings etc. I was also involved in planning and scheduling of the Electric Prototype Bus project. Also I was involved in the testing and commissioning of the Hybrid Double Deck.

Placement Outcomes

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and meeting people from all around the world within this global manufacturer. I have gained extensive knowledge of the company and have a true insight into what is involved in the manufacturing design industry. I now know that this type of work is exactly what I would like to do with my future career. If I get the opportunity to join WrightBus as a Design Engineer, I would welcome the opportunity.
