Reflections
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Next weekend we will welcome Father George Berendt of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). Father Berendt comes from Detroit (the hometown of Archbishops Vigneron and Brunett). He served in Japan and elsewhere, and is able to celebrate our Spanish Mass. We look forward to his visit.
The Mission Cooperative program is an annual opportunity for us to hear from a particular mission society. This program is set up by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, so that different missionary groups will be able to meet with Catholics and tell their story in all the parishes. No one parish is overwhelmed with many groups each year. Over the years, each parish is exposed to the variety of these groups and the kinds of missionary works they are accomplishing.
The Second Vatican Council produced an entire document on the Missionary Activity of the Church. A key statement of this decree is this: “The pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature.” This means that we are all missionaries in some way. Those who “go to the missions” in the USA or abroad are the ones who come to speak to us each year. But we who stay at home also have a missionary vocation.
Chapter VI of the Council’s decree is devoted to Missionary Cooperation. It begins with a fundamental truth. “Since the whole Church is missionary, and the work of evangelization is a basic duty of the People of God, this sacred Synod summons all to a deep interior renewal.” No one can give what he or she does not have. The purpose of the Second Vatican Council was the renewal of the Church. This begins with each of us. “Let all realize that their first and most important obligation toward the spread of the faith is this: to lead a profoundly Christian life. For their fervor in the service of God and their charity toward others will cause new spiritual inspiration to sweep over the whole Church. Then she will appear as a sign lifted up among the nations, the light of the world, and the salt of the earth.”
The Council recognized that a community of believers who really appreciate their gift of faith will be a community which wants to share that gift with others. Vocations to missionary groups will come forth. Prayer and penance will support the work of missionaries. Motivated Christians will give financial support to the work of these missionaries and to the people they serve.
The bishops of the Council acknowledged their own collegial vocation to assist in missionary work. “As members of the body of bishops which succeeds the College of the Apostles, all bishops are consecrated not just for one diocese, but for the salvation of the entire world. Christ’s mandate to preach the gospel to every creature primarily and immediately concerns them, with Peter and under Peter.” Just as no parish stands alone, but is a part of a diocese, no diocese stands alone, but is in communion with all the dioceses of the Church throughout the world. The strong help the weak. Where the Church is firmly rooted, it reaches out to places where the seed of the Gospel has been recently sown, has not yet been planted, or has withered away.
Our participation in the annual Mission Appeal is one way we support our bishop in his responsibility to the Church at large, and exercise our own missionary vocation. St. Joseph Parish has always responded generously to this effort.
Your Pastor,
Father Paul Schmidt
P.S. I’ll be away on vacation in Europe until August 17. Please pray that I will have safe journeys going and returning.

St. Joseph School will celebrate 50 years of a faith-filled tradition of academic excellence and service! On September 22, 2013, an Alumni Mass and reception is being planned. We’d love to get copies of pictures from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s for a slide show in the school gym. If you are able to scan your classic pictures, save them in jpeg format; please send them to Kathy Brunstein (class 1972) at [email protected] or you may drop off your labeled and addressed pictures at the school office. Your pictures will be mailed back to you.
Stewardship
Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire -- a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint.
Am I a cheerful or
a grudging giver?

—Your grateful Oktoberfest Team. Featured Booths this weekend:
PHOTO BOOTH
The Oktoberfest Photo Booth has been in existence since 2004. It was started by parishioner James Lindgren and Ricky Delos Reyes. Ricky has chaired the event alone since 2005 but added co-chairperson David Salvador in 2011 when he took on the core team position of Non-Food Chairperson. The booth has gone from photos with a fixed background of an American flag to the green screen type of photography allowing many background choices. From that time on the booth has become really grown in popularity. The prices are still set at $3.00 per copy for a 4x6 photo. It does not matter if the photo includes one person or many persons the price remains the same. Ricky and David provide many “dress-up” items like crazy glasses, hats, feather boas, etc., if patrons want to dress up and be silly. This year is a very special year for the Photo Booth; not only is it the 35th year anniversary of the Oktoberfest, it is also the 50th year anniversary of St. Joseph School. There are many families who come by every year for their Oktoberfest memory photo; if you have never done this, let this year be the beginning an Oktoberfest scrapbook of you and your family. Have fun and enjoy the day! Pose! Pose! Pose!

If you get up on Oktoberfest Sunday morning and want get an early start attend one of the two early masses and head over to the St. Joseph School Gym for a great meal. Oktoberfest breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 10:30 am on Sunday, October 6.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
THE FIRST COMMANDMENT - Part 2
You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only shall you serve.
(Lk 4:8; Deut 6:13)2095 The theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity inform and give life to the moral virtues. Thus charity leads us to render to God what we as creatures owe him in all justice. The virtue of religion disposes us to have this attitude.
2096 Adoration is the first act of the virtue of religion. To adore God is to acknowledge him as God, as the Creator and Savior, the Lord and Master of everything that exists, as infinite and merciful Love.
2098 The acts of faith, hope, and charity enjoined by the first commandment are accomplished in prayer. Lifting up the mind toward God is an expression of our adoration of God... Prayer is an indispensable condition for being able to obey God’s commandments.
2099 It is right to offer sacrifice to God as a sign of adoration and gratitude, supplication and communion: “Every action done so as to cling to God in communion of holiness, and thus achieve blessedness, is a true sacrifice.”
2100 Outward sacrifice, to be genuine, must be the expression of spiritual sacrifice: “The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit...” (Ps 51:17 )
2101 In many circumstances, the Christian is called to make promises to God. Baptism and Confirmation, Matrimony and Holy Orders always entail promises. Out of personal devotion, the Christian may also promise to God: prayer, alms-giving, pilgrimage...
2102 “A vow is a deliberate and free promise made to God concerning a possible and better good which must be fulfilled by reason of the virtue of religion. A vow is an act of devotion in which the Christian dedicates himself to God or promises him some good work” (Acts 18:18; 21:23-24)
2103 ...The Church can, in certain cases and for
proportionate reasons, dispense from vows and promises.
2105 ...The social duty of Christians is to respect and awaken in each man the love of the true and the good. It requires them to make known the worship of the one true religion which subsists in the Catholic and apostolic Church. “Christians are called to be the light of the world.”
2106 “Nobody may be forced to act against his convictions, nor is anyone to be restrained from acting in accordance with his conscience in religious matters in private or in public...
