HCOS/BCOS Rosetta Stone Foundations K-12 Program (formerly Totale) Course Descriptions (French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish)

The Rosetta Stone Foundations (we call it “Rosetta Stone” for short) program comprises three parts: Language Training, Games & Activities, and Live Tutoring. 1. Language Training teaches a second language the same way you learned

your first language: by pairing words to images, easily and naturally. Rosetta Stone mimics this process, using rich visual imagery to help learners think in a new language and interactive software to perfect pronunciation. Prescribed time requirements:

Grades 5-9 Grades 10-12

20min/day, 3 days/week 30min/day, 5 days/week

2. Games & Activities help cement the learners understanding by engaging in a wide range of activities designed to sharpen language skills. This increases interest and adds valuable reinforcement to language learned in Language Training. With Games & Activities, you can play online, connect with language learners around the world, and practice your new language with other learners at your level. If you’re worried you’ll never get a chance to practice your new language, the answer is Games & Activities. Prescribed time requirements:

Grades 5-9 Grades 10-12

10min/day, 3 days/week 15min/day, 5 days/week

3. Live Tutoring allows for interaction with other learners and builds confidence in an online, real-time interactive environment. By joining sessions of Live Tutoring, you practice and refine your conversational skills with native-speaking tutors. Each session builds on and reinforces what you have been learning in Language Training. Live Tutoring sessions are held every four weeks throughout the year; students will be required to book their times. To meet course requirements,

Second language acquisition is most successful when practiced on a daily basis. The following information for grades 5 to 9 is a recommendation; however, the

information provided for grades 10 to 12 is a minimum requirement:

In grades 5 through 9 students spend 20min in Language Training and 10min in Games & Activities, three to five days per week.

In grades 10 through 12, students must spend a minimum of 30min in Language Training and 15min in Games & Activities, five days per week.

The Student’s final grade will be based on:

Student progress Within Language Lessons/Training (see the

expectations above for your grade level) 30%

Student time Spent in Games & Activities (see the expectations

above for your grade level) 20%

Attendance and participation

In the Live Tutoring sessions (see HCOS Rosetta

Rosetta Stone Language Companion (FOR PRACTICE ONLY) provides students innovative ways to enrich their language learning on the go.You can learn a new language anywhere you can get online with your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or other mobile device. The mobile component features voice recognition software that gives you real-time feedback – as your accent improves, challenge yourself by turning up the speech precision level. **Note: This is for practice only as this app is not synched with the assigned Rosetta Stone activities. Any progress made while using this app will not be tracked by the Rosetta Stone online program. (iPad does not support Flash Player)

Rosetta Stone Language Training provides students with the ability to progress in their assigned Language Lessons. At this time, certain activities are unavailable such as writing, milestones, and adaptive recall.
