Greetings Caldwell U.M. Church family and friends,

Hope you are staying healthy, enjoying springtime with all its changes, and avoiding allergies; they can be troublesome.

During the 40 days following Easter, which lead to Ascension Day (Thurs May 13) a day some observe as a day to worship and reflect upon Pentecost, ten days later (the 50th day) (Acts 1 & 2) The story of Christ’s Resurrection and promises continue, as Jesus in John 15:26-27; 16:1-15 tells the Disciples that He would send Help: The Advocate, Comforter, and Counselor, who would come to live within God’s people. Jesus said He would send The Spirit from the heaven-ly Father, “The Spirit of truth …who will testify” on Christ’s behalf; to witness to our spirit’s that we are children of God (Romans 8:16). An Advocate; who will speak to us, giving us coun-cil, to offer correction, and comfort us in times of trouble and grief. The Spirit will guide and direct us to do right, and to make fair judgements.

The Holy Spirit identifies us as God’s children, causes us to grow, strengthen us in faith, and empowers us to do the work of God. We, as the Church (followers of Jesus) continue the work of Christ: preaching, teaching, baptizing and making disciples, advance God’s kingdom on earth, until Jesus returns. [Jesus’ return “Second Coming”, is linked to His Ascension; we will hear more in the days ahead.]

We as followers of Jesus are given great promises, which sometimes we overlook, or forget about. Sometimes, I believe that some Christians have not heard about, or have not allowed themselves to receive the Holy Spirit. Some say we receive the Spirit when we are baptized; which identifies us with the Church. But, there is more to the Christian life, as we grow in faith and experience more of God’s grace, and realize our need for God’s presence daily in our lives. Before the day of Pentecost, Jesus told the disciples to “wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father” (Acts1:4-5). Although sometimes we wait upon the Lord; The Holy Spirit is always working on our behalf, directing, guarding, and guiding us closer to God. As we grow closer to the Lord, we also grow closer to each other; caring, sharing and encouraging one another.

So, take comfort, be encouraged, stay healthy; wait upon The Lord, and renew your strength, and God will lift you up!

Blessings

Registration is now open for Annual Conference 2021

Each AC member session participant will register using their e-mail address, so each person registering needs their own e-mail address that is not shared by another per-son. District administrative assistants are available to assist those needing help creat-ing a new e-mail account. The e-mail address is the only place that participants will re-ceive: the link to the webinar/voting practice session; the link to the Annual Conference and Clergy Executive session webinars; and their unique, non-transferable voting ID. Those who miss the May 14 registration deadline will be able to view the livestream of Annual Conference but will not have the ability to vote during this year’s conference. Go to www.eocumc.com/eoac21 to register.

People have a hard time talking about suicide even though more than twice as many people died by suicide (47,511) in the United States in 2019 than died by homicide (19,141). Those statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that suicide was the 10th-leading cause of death in the country that year.

LifeAct’s mission is to prevent suicide by teaching young people to recognize the warning signs of suicide in themselves and their peers, and to seek professional help.

LifeAct instructors have presented its lifesaving program to more than 230,000 students in more than 200 Ohio schools. Research-based analysis shows that students who experience the program are significantly more likely to seek help for them-selves or others. LifeAct teaches students to be the first line of defense in preventing suicide. Life-Act saves children’s lives.

This Thursday is Earth Day. This year, we reflect on 2 Peter 3:12-13 which calls us to “wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.” What are the new heavens and new earth of God’s promise? In the wake of a year of global pandemic, we reflect on the populations that have been disproportionally devastated by Covid-19 and identify how that intersects with environ-mental racism and structural inequality.

Fanny Crosby

The favorite hymn "Blessed Assurance" is one of more than 8,000 penned by a blind, musical visionary. Fanny Crosby's songs are favorites in the United Methodist Hymnal.

From the age of 15, Crosby attended the New York Institute for the Blind and later joined the faculty and met her husband there. Alexander Van Alstyne, blind himself, was supportive. He often transcribed his wife's poems since Crosby could not write and composed the lyrics entirely in her mind.

Crosby's writings never brought her wealth. She was often paid just a dollar or two per poem with the rights to the songs being retained by the composer or music publishers. At one point, the songstress was destitute but Crosby wrote in her autobiography that the songs were God's work and not for profi

St. George is the patron saint of England and his symbol is a red cross over a white backdrop — the same red cross incorporated into the flag of England. His emblem was brought to Eng-land by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th century and was worn by the king’s soldiers in bat-tles.

St. George was born in what is present-day Turkey. Following in his father’s steps, he became a soldier and quickly rose in the ranks of the Roman army, ending up as a personal guard to Emperor Diocletian. When the emperor ordered the persecution of Christians, St. George re-fused to follow his orders and participate in this. He was tortured and executed in 303 A.D. in Palestine, where he is now buried.

The story of St. George slaying a dragon is well-known. The town of Silene was captured by a dragon. The locals would offer a human sacrifice to the dragon every day. When St. George was visiting the town, a princess was chosen to be sacrificed. So he killed the dragon and saved the people of Silene. To express their gratitude, the locals converted to Christianity.

National Pretzel Day – April 26, 2021

Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the

traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent — when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited. So there you have some National Pretzel Day history — with a twist!

Babe Ruth Day – April 27, 2021

Babe Ruth Day on April 27 has got everyone at National Today eagerly waiting.

Babe Ruth was and still is known as the best baseball player of all time. From hitting records after records to still having many of his accolades still main-tained, Ruth came to be known as The Colossus of Clout and The Sultan of Swat. He was a big star and inspiration to many youngsters, but he was a rebellious child who would con-stantly get into trouble. Seeing this, Child Protection Authorities took him away from his household, enrolling him into a Catholic orphanage instead. However, nothing held back Ruth’s talent as he went on to become the greatest baseball player to ever exist.

After Easter Thoughts

Why would the Son of God, who had just conquered death, bother to

pause and leave His tomb tidy? The Gospel of John 20:7 tells us that the

cloth which had been placed over Jesus’ face was not just thrown aside,

but was neatly folded. Why?
