PLC module user manual 2
Introduction
This user manual has been developed to give PLC course attendees most of the information required to safely use the Twido-equipped PLC training panel, as shown right.
As much information as practicable, has been included to enable independent learning of programming and interfacing. This panel uses a Twido PLC and requires the use of Twidosuite programming software.
The full Twidosuite programming guide is available at Schneider’s website:
www.schneider-electric.com
Safety
Important! Wiring diagrams are included in this manual to ensure the correct connection of any external apparatus. Simple protection of the PLC and Touchscreen are offered in the form of 20mm fuses but care should always be taken to ensure that damage is not caused to modules by the incorrect use or connection of I/O equipment.
Although the Touchscreen, PLC and I/O operate at 24Vdc, 230Vac is still present at the PSU module and the panel is highly conductive (although it is well earthed though the mains connection). Be aware of this,
especially when water is involved in the lab or practical.
The automatic control of moving mechanical parts is made possible by some apparatus when connected to a running PLC. This could cause injury if you do not take care when powering up your application.
Lastly, you may have noticed that the PLC is heavy and has a movable leg for standing upright. Watch your fingers when manoeuvring and mind your back when lifting.

Why do the panel switches start at input 8?
Several additional input functions are available within inputs 0-7, including high speed counters etc. These would therefore be wasted if used for discrete panel switches only.

Communicating with the PLC
There are several ways of interfacing with the Twido PLC for configuring the processor and uploading or downloading the program.
1. Serial Connection PC USB to Twido Port 1
This requires a special two-piece cable. (TSXCUSB485 and TSXCRJMD25)
Once Twidosuite software has been installed, your computer should be able to find this cable and assign a COMS port to it. If you encounter any trouble, see the additional info in appendix B or see your tutor.
2. PC Ethernet to Twido via Twidoport adaptor
An RJ-45 cross-over patch lead can connect directly from the Ethernet port of your PC to the Twidoport.
Your computer must be set-up with a fixed IP address that is in the correct network address range.
See Appendix B to configure your PC.
PLC module user manual 8
3. PC to Twido using a LAN or network router
Once set up correctly, this method allows all devices connected to the same router (or LAN) to
communicate with each other. The Magelis HMI’s can also be programmed and linked this way.
This method also requires that each device and computer has a unique IP address within a specified range.
The PLC panels are already configured with fixed IP addresses as shown below. PLC-1 10.10.10.101 Magelis-1 10.10.10.111 PLC-2 10.10.10.102 Magelis-2 10.10.10.122 PLC-3 10.10.10.103 Magelis-3 10.10.10.133 PLC-4 10.10.10.104 Magelis-4 10.10.10.144 PLC-5 10.10.10.105 Magelis-5 10.10.10.155 PLC-6 10.10.10.106 Magelis-6 10.10.10.166 …and so on .
These address ranges are used only because they are easy to remember. Your tutor may assign an IP address for you to use as YOUR fixed computer IP however, you can make up your own, as long as it does not clash with another device or user.
My fixed computer IP address: _____ . _____ . _____ . ___________ Please do not alter the PLC or Magelis IP addresses, unles you have the approval of your tutor,

Appendix A: How to configure a PC with a fixed IP address
1. Go to Control Panel
11 Wintec 2012 3. Go to View network status and tasks.
4. Click on Local area connection. Note: you will need to have a network cable inserted to either a device or router.
PLC module user manual 12 5. Click Properties on the window that appears.
13 Wintec 2012 7. Click the button for Use the following IP address.
8. Type in the appropriate IP address. Check that subnet mask is 255.0.0.0 then click OK. Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 should also work as well. Leave Gateway blank.

Appendix B: Configuring the USB serial cable
The following has been extracted from a document by John Caldwell of Schneider Electric, NZ.
Step
1. Install TwidoSuite software then exit TwidoSuite.
2. Connect the interface cable to your PC and Twido.
TSX CUSB 485 cable, USB toRJ45 + TSXCRJMD25 cable, RJ45 to miniDIN rotary switch position – 0 , polarization – OFF
3. Run Schneider Electric/Communication drivers/Drivers manager. Select the MODBUS SERIAL Driver tab.
15 Wintec 2012 4. Click Configuration and on the COM Port drop-down menu, select the com port that has the cable name and (ready) next to it. If (ready) does not appear, unplug the USB connector and plug it back in again. Close the Modbus Driver window and go to step 3 above.
Check that the Baud rate is 19.2, 1 stop bit and Parity at None then click OK
PLC module user manual 16 5. If (ready) does not appear, uninstall your comms driver then unplug the USB cable and then plug the cable back in and it will reinstall the comms driver.
The whole trick here is to get the word (ready) to appear to the right of the cable name as in STEP 4.
6. Start TwidoSuite and go to Monitor Mode and try to establish a connection with one of the existing connections (if there are any shown).
17 Wintec 2012 If none of these work, click the Manage connection button at the bottom of the Twido screen.
Click Add and set up Connection mode to Serial and IP address/Number to the port number shown as (ready) in STEP 4. Click Apply and establish
communication with the Twido. If this works you are done.
If there is no com port corresponding to the com port of STEP 4, then exit TwidoSuite, unplug the USB cable. Wait a few seconds then plug the USB cable back in and restart TwidoSuite.
