PRESIDENT’S REPORT
At our AGM we appointed three new directors: Adrian Dunn, Deidre Rutherford and Katy Woods, restoring the Board to 9 members following a year with 7. Kurt stood down as a director but thankfully continues as our Treasurer. The Board acknowledged his amazing service over the last few years, not only as Treasurer but in disparate roles, with a Life Membership.
Our ever-‐popular Patron, Sue Englart, was re-‐appointed.
The AGM was followed by the first meeting of the new Board of Directors. Chris represents the Board in negotiations for the sale of our Bramwell St. block. The prospective buyer still awaits a valuation. Following further discussion of Chris’ recommended development of a web-‐based system of customer relationship management and gallery management, the following motion was passed: ‘That a working party be set up to create a business plan for the development of a new website to manage CRM and gallery, and that the members be Chris, Deidre, Peter Fitzpatrick and Kurt.’ Moved Deirdre, seconded Chris, CARRIED. Allan asked for assistance with recording names, photographing, mounting and framing selected works for the Junior Art Expo on Sunday 30 May. It’s a major task and requires several pairs of hands. Ian presented a detailed paper about our 9 investments, noting the portfolio value is approaching pre-‐Covid levels. Kurt’s Treasurer’s Report noted our annual insurance premium is due and recommended the Financial Subcommittee meet soon to discuss any changes required. Kurt gave each new Board member copies of his “Information for Directors” booklet and TAS’ Constitution. A visitor, Jacqui Cousins, urged us to open the galleries for longer hours. Board members agreed in principle but pointed out the difficulties in finding sufficient volunteers to cover the roster.
The Toowoomba Art Society–The Chronicle Junior Art Expo ran from 1989 -‐2019 but had to be cancelled last year. We’re taking a chance and are organizing this year’s Expo. Interestingly our many sponsors have come on board, promising more than $1000 in prize money, trusting that COVID19 won’t have completely obliterated school art programs. Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery staff cannot allow more than 40 persons in the gallery and must insist on well-‐spaced works on display, necessitating an exhibition split between it and Culliford Gallery. Current thinking is to have all the pre-‐ and primary school works at TRAG (June 9 –July 11) and all high school and Open sections at Culliford House (June 8 – July 4). A half page ad appears once a week in the Chronicle until May 27. And the information appears on our website and on Facebook.

There was a shaky response to sitting the 45x45 exhibition. I know it can be boring if there are very few visitors, and some members are anxious about using the EFTPOS machine, but in all fairness every exhibitor ought to take a turn, remembering that welcoming visitors and providing information about TAS and our exhibitions program is important PR. We still managed to sell 10 of the 50 works on show.
This month we have two impressive solo exhibitions. Catherine Ketton’s Just Breathe includes last year’s enigmatic, prize-‐
winning “Love in the Time of Covid” then a somewhat surreal series of meticulously painted glassware by the sea, and interesting compositions of twigs and leaves, but the major focus is on lovingly painted land-‐ and sea-‐scapes in a variety of sizes from miniatures upwards. Her preferred medium is oil, using a classical approach, but by adding cold wax medium in several works she has selectively added rich textures which animate smooth surfaces, emphasise lighting and dramatise otherwise placid scenes in works such as “Reflecting’ and “Transcend”.
Naomi Hatt’s En Route to Perinet records things seen or collected on her walks to TAS in a series of masterly drawings.
Assorted birds, including a profile portrait of an ibis and a magisterial magpie standing on a fence, are captured in fine detail using ink wash or graphite and charcoal, while ink studies of empty seed pods and Bunya leaves are remarkably three-‐
dimensional. Naomi is concurrently exhibiting at TRAG. We Came for the Trees comprises drawings and prints of wildlife and plants anchored by a large triple study of a kookaburra taking flight.
Thanks go to Aengus Munro for painting the Printmaking space with paint left over from Eddie Gunn’s recent painting of the Perinet Gallery. The whole area’s looking spruce again.
Thanks also to life member Rhyl Dearden for her recent donation to TAS. Before relocating to Warwick with her husband Hugh, Rhyl was TAS’ archivist and the prime mover behind our 90th birthday celebration. She’s keen for us to start planning for our centenary in 2025. We’d welcome your ideas.
