Are you an experienced and ambitious Research and Innovation Development professional looking to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities? Are you a confident leader capable of building excellent working relationships with academic colleagues, funders and senior stakeholders?

The University’s Strategic Plan (2014-2020) sets an ambitious target to grow research funding by 50% to £200m by 2020. Within this, improving links with external partners, including industry, to facilitate collaborative research and innovation programmes is seen as essential. We have a strong track record in delivering Knowledge Exchange (KE) and, in line with our commitment to continuous improvement, have made a number of strategic investments to further increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our KE activities.

As a KE Programme Manager, you will play a key role in capturing the outputs and outcomes that arise from KE interventions across the University. You will work with University academics to capture the value created across all KE projects and programmes and liaise with external organisations to evidence the impact of these interventions. This work will inform the building of capability in key areas of University research, facilitate the creation of new partnerships, provide tangible evidence of the value of research and innovation and underpin reporting to external funder/partner organisations.

You will work closely with the Director of Research and Innovation Development and the Director of Commercialisation to set the direction of the portfolio of projects and establish systems and processes to capture value that these investments generate.

To be successful you should have strong project management experience, excellent organisational and the ability to work confidently and assertively with a range of senior stakeholders, using coaching, negotiating, communication and influencing skills to achieve successful outcomes. Some experience of working with industry is desirable this is not an essential criteria for the role.

What does the role entail?

As a Knowledge Exchange Programme Manager, your main duties will include:  Responsibility for the overall coordination, implementation, execution and

successful delivery of the portfolio of innovation projects.

 Responsibility for working with academics and researcher leaders across the University to help them understand how to maximise value creation and impact delivery from KE projects.

 Liaise with external partners to capture the impact of our KE work and produce corroborating evidence of this impact.

 Responsibility for working with colleagues in Finance at all levels across the University to ensure a robust financial framework and budget forecast is in place and regularly updated for all projects;

 Managing the initiative throughout the various stages of the project lifecycle with the lead responsibility for the delivery, capture and reporting of successful outputs, outcomes and impacts

 Work with academic and professional service colleagues to help shape projects, ensuring close strategic alignment and effectively consulting with key stakeholders, including Procurement, Finance, HR and other services and external partners to ensure all work can be completed to time and to budget.  Supporting and providing assurance to the RIS Directors regarding the

management of constraints, priorities and risks, to drive negotiations between parties to gain consensus where necessary and to deliver results accordingly;  Producing formal reports that include data and supporting narrative in a timely and professional manner for submission to external parties, including annual returns to Research England (Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), KE Concordat and HEIF Accountability Statements.

 Making recommendations based on lessons learnt for future developments, providing objective guidance and advice;

 Sharing best practice, coaching and supporting other colleagues across the University and seeking opportunities to raise the profile of KE activity delivered across the University;

 Demonstrating personal and role model leadership in terms of being focussed, flexible, professional, motivated and personally effective in order to deliver the agreed deliverables and outcomes;

 Developing and maintaining a high level of knowledge of the latest developments within the University and the HE sector, and best practice in

programme, project and change management in order to provide advice and guidance on a range of issues within the University.

What will you bring to the role?

As a Knowledge Exchange Programme Manager, you will have:

 A degree or professional qualification and experience of working in a research and innovation environment;

 Significant, recent experience in applying best practice project and programme methodologies in concurrent complex projects and programmes, throughout their respective life cycles;

 The ability to work confidently and assertively with a range of senior stakeholders, using coaching, negotiating, communication and influencing skills to achieve successful outcomes;

 Experience of managing interactions with external partners and the ability to develop productive relationships;

 The ability to be flexible, creative and self-motivated in approaching complex organisational issues, with an ability to ensure delivery of real measurable benefits through strong organisation and prioritisation skills;

 Experience of leading and managing project teams, achieving results through other people without necessarily using formal line management authority;  A good understanding of Higher Education combined with ability to challenge

accepted norms;

 Excellent skills in leading and facilitating workshops and events; providing structure to enable groups to function effectively;

 Strong problem solving and analytical capability; confident dealing with complex financial, performance, strategy and organisational information.

You may also have:

 Previous experience working in a Higher Education environment;  Experience of Business Process Management;
