South West College’s Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) are student-centred areas, providing a wide range of quality resources to enhance the student’s learning experience. The LRC contains traditional educational resources such as books, journals, software
and audio/visual materials, but also encourages the use of electronic information resources. In addition to the College’s resources, Higher Education students will also have access to a wealth of information through their associated University.
The Centres include high speed Internet access computers, printers, copiers and scanner to assist in student learning. After recent improvements the centres now offer dedicated areas for the following:

Tell us a little about you.
My name is Daniel Sawyers. I am in my second year of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business here at the Omagh Campus of South West College. Outside of the college I have a keen interest in agriculture and farming which is why I chose to enrol on this course. I wanted to widen my knowledge of business to help me develop and start my own business in the future.
Tell us about your course
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma In Business has 18 units with 9 covered in year one and 9 in year two. I have really enjoyed the course so far with learning and gaining new skills which will be useful for me in a real life business environment. The bookkeeping units within the course I particularly enjoy as I have always liked working with figures and calculations.
The work is hard at times and does require a fair level of hard work and determination. I enjoy most aspects of the course and especially the assignments which can be related to an area which interests me. Most assignments within the course are related to case studies which are interesting and sometimes we get the opportunity to visit these businesses, like our trip to the Coca Cola factory in first year. I believe this course will be a great help to me in the future and the range of skills I have gained will be put to good use.
What do you hope to do in the future?
In the future I hope to start my own business within the agricultural industry. I have currently started work in setting up my business and I own a flock of sheep and breeding cows. From my on-farm experience I have witnessed some problems which appear to be common on all farms that ultimately affect production, efficiency and profit. I am interested in exploring ways of minimising these problems and hope to develop new strategies in the future that will lead to increased production, more efficiencies and ultimately higher profits.

I am a 23 year old, full-time carer from North Devon. I previously attended North Devon College (Petroc) from 2006-9, where I studied Classical Civilization (A2) and History and Art (AS). I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to do so, visiting the likes of France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Venice, Egypt and the US of A. I am an avid reader, runner, and musician and enjoy being outdoors. Art, however, is at the centre of all I do and what I enjoy best.

Studying Art and Design at South West College here in Omagh so far has been fantastic. The facilities here are second to none; having access to up to the minute technology, such as i-pads, tablets and 3D printers and with the Strule Art Centre
literally on our door step we have been lucky enough to enjoy limited access to a professional Print Workshop. The course itself gives us the chance to explore a variety of Art forms; painting, ceramics, graphics, 3D sculpture and print to name a few. Our tutors are attentive, professional and expert in their various areas of Art and Design and encourage and support us endlessly as we aspire toward our future careers.
What do you hope to do in the future?
I have an idea of the area of the industry I would like to work in; however I found I enjoy a range of the areas covered so far on this course. I would class myself as more of a tactile artist who enjoys getting stuck into a project and before I came to SWC Omagh Campus I would never have believed I would enjoy the likes of graphics, however being a part of this course I have discovered a new avenue and the possibilities seem endless as doors continue to open. Being someone who enjoys the theatre, I fancy the idea of working in production, however I also enjoy designing so at this stage I am content to let my education in Art develop and simply go with my instinct.

Being an avid artist this course was perfectly suited for me. It gives multiple opportunities to perfect my talents and learn new skills, helping refine my abilities in order to decide a future career course. This course is much more comprehensive to that of an A Level, it stretches one’s abilities and takes you out of your comfort zone. There are many areas of art which have been opened up to me because of this course: such as fashion and textiles, sculpture, product design and so on.

This programme follows on directly from the Level 2 programme. It allows the student to develop their skills to a more specialist level by introducing electrical equipment, advanced manual techniques and involving treatment of the whole body which is not part of the Level 2 programme. More in-depth underpinning science, business and financial aspects are delivered at this level allowing a more comprehensive understanding of the industry. Course Content
Candidates must achieve a total of 58 credits. 13 credits from Mandatory group A and 45 credits from Optional group B.

Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirements are 6 points, an interview is required and the criteria may be enhanced.
Progression
Successful students can progress to Level 3 NVQ qualifications. Alternatively there are a wide range of job opportunities available for trained chefs in a variety of hospitality settings such as hotels, restaurants, cruise liners and at tourist attractions.

The Diploma in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership is for anybody already working in the hospitality sector or about to take up a new role in this sector. This Diploma may suit you if you’ve worked in the hospitality industry for some time – perhaps you have plenty of experience, and you might already supervise others or manage resources.

Entry Requirements
Level two diploma in profesional cookery/ Level two NVQ professional cookery or equivalent. It is an advantage to have suitable work experience in a hospitality environment. L2 Essential Skills in Literacy & Numeracy or equivalent plus an interview are required.
Progression
On successful completion of the programme students can gain employment in a variety of chef roles in hospitality outlets, these roles may include chef de partie or kitchen supervisor/ assistant head chef. Those who wish to further their education may complete a Foundation Degree in Culinary arts or in Hospitality management.
