M.D. Anderson IS Technology Standards
This document presents current hardware and software standards defined at M.D. Anderson, and lists some products that are currently prohibited from use at the institution. To be added to this list, any hardware or software items or types must first be evaluated and certified by the Integrated Desktop Services Technology Architecture Team.

Note: The IS Division recognizes that the PC hardware standards listed below are inadequate for certain users' computing requirements. Examples include users who run AutoCAD, use video-editing software, or require a workstation with exceptionally high multitasking capability. Dell's "Precision" line of workstations

designed to meet the needs of such users. The Integrated Desktop Services Technology Architecture team will work with customers who require above-standard levels of computing power and features, to select the model(s) that will meet their needs.

Products prohibited from use
Use of the products and product categories listed below is prohibited at the institution due to potential risks to the computing environment. It is important to note that this list is not complete; the Information Services division identifies such products on an ongoing basis. For more
information on prohibited IS technology products, contact the Information Security department at 713-745-9000.
• Peer-to-peer file sharing tools, such as Napster, BearShare, Kazaa, Morpheus, GoToMyPC, Gnutella, etc.
• “Sniffer” tools (except by the Network Services department)
• Hardware/software tools used to obtain unauthorized access to any application, database, server, etc.
• Security tools purchased by a department that have not been reviewed by Information Security for acceptability prior to purchase and/or installation
