Harry is a Master Judge with the CCCA.

As a CCCA Master Judge, he has participated as the Chief Class Judge at concours events throughout North America. For ten years Harry was responsible for the Pebble Beach Concours awards ceremony as the

p r E s E n t E d b y l a j o l l a h i s t o r i C a l s o C i E t y 13 elcome to the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and the La

Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours! Now in its second decade, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world, and includes entries from collectors in every competitive class. Thousands of people gather at the famed Scripps Park for the spectacle that is the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

This celebration of historic and contemporary automobiles and motorcycles is shared by owners, fellow enthusiasts, and friends simply enjoying the event. Visitors from throughout Southern California, as well as travelers from national and international destinations, come to enter the judged competition, to appreciate and learn about the history of the automobile, and to savor the beautiful setting of La Jolla. The span of history from which these vehicles are drawn covers that of the automobile itself. The care and passion by which these classics are preserved celebrates the engineering and innovativeness by which they were built. The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is recognition of the value of this history and of the competitor’s excellence in preservation.

The Concours supports the La Jolla Historical Society mission to inspire and empower the community to make La Jolla’s diverse past a relevant part of contemporary life, and to serve as a resource and

gathering place where residents and visitors explore history, art, ideas and culture.  We are extremely proud to present the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and are grateful to the car owners, sponsors, volunteers, judges, committee planners, restorers, and La Jolla merchants. All of these generous supporters are essential to making the event successful. A special thanks to G. Michael Dorvillier, Chairman of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and the La Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours, for his leadership, enthusiasm, tenacity, and tireless energy. And thank you for attending and participating in the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance—we hope you have a wonderful weekend!

t began as the dream of a few La Jolla business owners who were looking for a way to showcase the beauty and charm of downtown La Jolla during the winter months. In 2003, Michel Ullman, Terry Underwood and Yvette Marcum met at Georges at The Cove restaurant and drew up plans to host a car show on the lawn at Ellen Browning Scripps Park. The three were part of the local merchants’ association, at the time called Promote La Jolla. They brought their idea to the association’s board; in response, a group of passionate members—including Tiffany Share, Deborah Marengo, Bob Meigs, Steve Edelstein, Bill Price and Greg Rizzi—joined forces with all-star event promoter Laurel McFarlane to form the La Jolla Motor Car Classic committee.

The committee was successful in securing the support and financial backing necessary to bring their vision to life, and in January 2004, the inaugural La Jolla Motor Car Classic was held with humble but auspicious beginnings. The event attracted a diverse field of about 50 hot rods, antique automobiles and classic cars, all owned by local collectors and enthusiasts, but the committee saw the potential to bring the show to the next level by enlisting the support of the local car collector community.

So in the spring of 2004, Edelstein reached out to two La Jolla car aficionados, Chuck Spielman and Neal Wichard, to help promote a show that would appeal to a concours-quality audience. Spielman and Wichard believed that the stunning and picturesque Scripps Park venue held the potential to rival Pebble Beach and attract a national audience of car collectors.

The two friends reached out to their vast network of fellow collectors, including Alan Taylor, a well-respected local classic car restorer, to help recruit high-end classic automobiles; they also asked collector Cy Conrad to help Meigs establish the criteria for judging the show. In 2007, Spielman brought noted collector Dave Darwin on board, who urged the committee to turn the LJMCC into a weekend-long event, including fencing off Scripps Park and making it a ticketed event, as well as introducing the first La Jolla Motor Classic Car Tour.

That same year, the committee designated the Monarch

School, a San Diego school whose mission is to educate children impacted by homelessness, as a charitable beneficiary of the event. In the years that would follow, the event would expand its charitable contributions to include several other local charities.

In 2009 the Promote La Jolla organization turned the show over to the La Jolla Historical Society, a nonprofit that seeks to preserve and celebrate La Jolla’s diverse past, assumed the underwriting of the event. Trip Bennett, then vice president of the Society, appreciated the living history that the event provided and saw great value in incorporating the LJMCC as part of the Society’s mission. Bennett assumed the role of LJMCC chairman, an office he held until 2011. With Bennett’s leadership, the La Jolla Historical Society helped create the foundation necessary for the LJMCC to continue to grow and fulfill its potential.

In 2010, Spielman brought G. Michael Dorvillier into the fold to help the committee develop a stronger sponsor base and further secure the involvement of La Jolla’s merchants.

Dorvillier stepped up to fill the role of chairman in 2011. At that time he committed to convert the event into a Concours and, along with event producer McFarlane, helped elevate the event to its current status as one of the world’s top collector car shows, according to Octane magazine.

One of Dorvillier’s meaningful contributions to the event came in 2012, when he changed the name of the La Jolla Motor Car Classic to the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. Today, the Concours is filled with three days of world-class exhibitions and celebrations that inspire all who attend. In a nod to the show’s humble roots, the event also includes a free car show open to the public that connects Scripps Park to the Village.

From all of us at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, we thank you for your support and participation in this unique event that honors the automobile and its historical significance.

With a career now spanning three decades and counting, artist Scott Jacobs has consistently reached and then surpassed new heights. First recognized by Harley-Davidson Motor Company for his artistic talent, he was signed by them to a long term contract. Since then, Scott has expanded into different genres entering himself into the mainstream of the fine art community. Included on that list is imagery of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Corvette, Ford GT and Mustang, exotic cars, wine still life’s, flowers, and more. The common theme of his work; regardless of the subject is his hyper-photorealism. It is his mastery of that style that has enamored audiences worldwide. People from the west coast to Eastern

Europe and beyond enjoy his work as it currently hangs in more than 90 countries and over 30 museums.

Scott’s medium of choice is acrylic on Belgian linen and his tool is a paintbrush smaller than a pencil. Scott works from photographs but draws each and every subject out freehand with a pencil. He then begins the blocking in process and blending of multiple colors to achieve the desired values for a particular work. It is an arduous procedure that few artists would dare undertake. His reward is witnessing his collectors’ reaction when they see the finished product for the first time. With that, Scott has had a career of success few artists can claim.

After years of achievement as an artist, Scott decided to get back into the retail business by opening his own galleries: Scott Jacobs Studio Art Gallery & Framing in San Elijo Hills and Jacobs Gallery in Deadwood, South Dakota. Here guests can view Scott’s originals, prints, and collectables.

At Jacobs Gallery, you will also be able to enjoy several vintage motorcycles from the Jacobs’ Collection.

Keith Martin returns for the seventh year as our master of ceremonies this weekend.

“The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance represents a perfect blend of wonderful people, great cars and a fantastic location,” said Martin. “Being here is one of the highpoints of my collector car year.”

Noted for his onstage wit, warmth and deep knowledge of collectible cars, Martin has been an emcee at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Concours of America, Hilton Head Concours, Keels and Wheels, Concorso Italiano, Legends of the Autobahn, the Kiahwah Concours and many others.

He has been involved with the collector car hobby for more than thirty years. As a writer, publisher, television commentator and enthusiast, he is constantly on the go, meeting collectors and getting involved in their activities throughout the world.

This year, Martin was honored for his life-long contribution to the hobby and for his involvement in community giving by receiving both the Lee Iacocca Award and the Edward Herrmann Award.

He founded the monthly Sports Car Market magazine twenty-nine years ago, and it has developed into the authoritative informed voice of the collector car hobby. Martin’s second publication, American Car Collector,

launched seven years ago, continues to be the fastest growing collector car publication in America.

Martin’s columns on collecting and reviews of exotic cars, including the Ford GT and the Bentley Continental GT, have appeared in the New York Times.

He has hosted numerous television specials, and is the co-host of the highly-rated “What’s My Car Worth” shown on the Velocity channel.

He was the Chairman of the Meguiar’s Collector Car Person of the Year Award, is on the Board of Trustees of the LeMay Museum and serves on the faculty of the Collier Museum symposium on Connoisseurship.

Martin brings an eclectic background to his passion for cars. His academic background includes the study of Intellectual History at Reed College, in Portland, Oregon, and study as a Dance Major at the Juilliard School in New York City. He founded the first professional ballet company in Oregon, Ballet Oregon, was awarded the Oregon Art’s Commission Individual Artist’s Fellowship for new choreography, and was director of dance for the Portland Opera. He is currently a member of the board of directors of Oregon Ballet Theater and a patron of the Portland Art Museum.

Martin lives in Portland, Oregon with his nine-year-old budding car collector, Bradley – who got his first car last year, a 1960 Bug Eye Sprite (the same model Keith got the day he turned 16). His 25-year-old daughter, Alex, recently graduated from Oregon State University, works at Daimler Trucks North America, where she is the Support Specialist to the Sr. VP of Engineering and Technology. She writes for SCM and is a judge here today.

In tribute of Jeff Teague: loving husband, adoring father, excellent friend, and esteemed automobile designer

Jeff Teague lives on through his lifework: painstakingly crafted automobile designs. Teague graduated from the Art Center College of Design in 1978. As part of an incredible career in automotive design, he was formerly with Volkswagen of Germany and held the post of Chief Designer for Volkswagen of America. He also enjoyed the position of the senior designer at Mitsubishi Motors of America.

Later in his career, while working at Ford Motor Company, he penned the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable wagon, and was the principal

designer for the 1984 Lincoln Continental. Teague has provided design services and consulting services to Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, and others. He was the head of his own firm: Teague Design. He started the company in 1998 in Agoura Hills, California, where he called home.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife Glenda, his son Author, and daughters Thea and Rachel. His mother, Marian, is celebrating her 90th Birthday this year. The family still owns “Dick Teague‘s” AMX 3 car, which he designed in the 60’s. Jeff’s loving family are present at this year’s Concours to participate in the award ceremony.

In the world of collector automobiles, there are many wonderful cars. There are but a handful, however, that earn universal acclaim. These automobiles are exceedingly rare.

They are built on the finest chassis with the utmost attention to detail of design. And, above all, they are iconically beautiful, a sight to behold, and the pinnacle of achievement for their coachbuilder. Our featured car, General Lyon’s 1934 Packard Runabout Speedster, is such a car. This beautifully restored boat tail is the last of four to ever be produced. Many collectors argue that the 1934 Packard Twelve represents the ultimate expression of Packard’s leadership and legacy in the fine car market.

Imagine a world still dominated by Model T and Model A Fords – where nearly every car on the road was black, and where construction quality was often weak. Now, imagine that into this world glides a Runabout Speedster. With its streamlined pontoon fenders, long hood, and elegantly tapered boattail, the Lebaron Runabout Speedster was truly a revolutionary vision. To this day, there remains no modern comparison.

Delivered new in Washington, D.C., little is known about the automobiles first owner, a man named Mr. E. Specth. When new, the car was finished in black, with black leather. The car remained with Specth until it was purchased by George Hormel, founder of the George Hormel Foods in Austin, Wisconsin – best known for the 1937 introduction of the ham product called Spam. Hormel kept the car until his death in 1946, where it was passed down to his son Jay, and later to his grandson George A Hormel II in 1954. The car was eventually sold to noted collector Jack Nethercutt, who kept the car for 15 years before selling it to Bill Harrah in the early to mid-1970’s.

In September of 1985, General William Lyons procured the automobile and commissioned restorer Richard Martin to conduct a comprehensive restoration, changing the color to the breathtaking shade of blue it wears today on the Concours lawn.

With only four cars built, the opportunity to witness an original LeBaron Runabout Speedster will always be rare. Exquisite beauty, extreme rarity, and flawless provenance – in the art world, those words could be attached to a priceless piece of art. The words ring true with LeBaron’s masterpiece, the Runabout Speedster.

Many have called it the most beautiful Packard ever built. Some say it is the most gorgeous coachbuilt American car of all. Regardless, there is no denying that the Runabout Speedster was one of the most remarkable design achievements of its time – and, for that matter, all time. Do not miss the opportunity to witness this car in person on the Concours lawn. We are proudly featuring this remarkable automobile as our featured car and commemorative art work for the 2017 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

t is an honor to be serving as the Chief Judge of the 13th annual La Jolla Concours.

I am grateful to have Ed Gilbertson, the Chief Judge Emeritus for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, as my mentor and Chief Honorary Judge for a second year. We have an incredible team of returning judges from all over America and this year we have selected several new judges from Europe.

Building on the growth and success of last year’s Concours, we will continue to employ the principles and values of the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG) www.icjag.org this means we will be using international standards to judge the originality and authenticity of the entries, as well as the elegance and special character of the cars. As a result we will have an event that not only presents a beautiful display of rolling sculpture, but one that makes a very significant contribution to the preservation of vehicles in their original state. This will be something that future generations will then appreciate and enjoy.

The La Jolla Concours is the sole true concours in the San Diego area. The organizing committee is so specialized that they fully understand the importance of the event for the collectors, enthusiasts as well as the spectators.

The combination of outstanding vehicles, knowledgeable judges and the spectacular grounds of The Cove, La Jolla constitutes a perfect recipe for a spectacular event. I hope that a great deal of enjoyment is had by everyone in attendance.
