GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER

SOCIAL QUARTERS

PRELATE

As I assume my role as Governor, I ask you to review the many improvements in the Dale City Moose over this past year. Those improvements are the result of the efforts of the past Board of Officers. I know you join me in thanking the outgoing Officers, especially Governor Mike Toomey, and Senior Regent Chris Sarna, for their leadership. I also want to thank Don O’Connor, Administrator, and Bill Moriority, Food and Beverage Manager, for their dedication to the day-to-day details that make Dale City Moose an extraordinary lodge.

The new Board of Officers will strive to maintain and advance the work of the past board. Our goals include providing activities for our Moose family members, assisting our community through service programs, supporting Moose charities, and promoting membership growth. Dale City Family Center depends on volunteers to accomplish these goals. Please

“pitch in” whenever you can.

Please keep Chris Sarna in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers from lung transplant surgery.

I look forward to serving you as Governor. Please contact anyone on the current Board of Officers if you have any suggestions.

Bob Skinner Governor

We donated $5,565.00 to various groups in the fourth quarter ending on April 20 2011. We donated to the Special Olympics of Virginia ($600.00); P.W. Lassie League ($250.00);

DTQ Little League ($500.00); Cub Scout Pack 689 ($500.00);

Dale City Little League ($650.00); VMA Win the Wes ($720.00);

Covington Moose Scout Camporee ($100.00); Danielle Easter, Winnie’s niece ($500.00); ARC, ($250.00); Dale City Little League Challenger Division ($650.00); Forest Park High School grad night ($100.00); VMA Mooseheart paving ($600.00);

Endowment Fund ($145.00).

Thanks to all the volunteers who makes this the best Moose in the world.

Don O’Connor, Administrator

Thanks to all of the members who came out and enjoyed the Kentucky Derby Party at the Moose. Special thanks to everyone who took the time to make a “Derby Hat”

and wore it to the party. The Moose races appeared to be a huge hit also.

This next month will be another busy month at the lodge. We will have bands every Friday night and our improved Friday night seafood menu continues to be a crowd pleaser. The new kitchen allows us to do a few more things now.

Since the Moose Races were such a hit at the Kentucky Derby party, we will be having a Moose Races night on Saturday, June 25 . First post time for the 12-race field

th

will be at 6:00 p.m.

The Loose Moose Cruise is scheduled for Sunday, June 26 . Look for the details in this newsletter. The boat is

th

limited to 38 members so get out to the lodge and sign up soon before the event is sold out.

If you have any suggestions for events to have at the lodge, please just let me know and we will look into it.

Remember, you can never have too much fun at the Dale City Moose Family Center.

Bill Moriarity

Social Quarters Manager

Good news for the lodge. Chris Sarna made a wonderful recovery from her recent surgery. She is on a road to recovery and is feeling excellent.

Least we don’t forget, John Scalon and his wife are the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl. The new addition’s name is Taylor May Scalon.

On a sad note – Vincent Salzillo passed away. Our condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends during their time of loss.

Hello, Women of the Moose (WOTM),

I would like to introduce myself and our new appointed officers. I am Stephenie Collins your newly-elected Senior Regent, I am very excited about the new year and hope to serve you well, I have a great Board of Officers to support me: Jr. Grad Regent - Chris Sarna; Jr. Regent - Kamela Hutchins; Recorder - Eva Hatch; Secretary/Treasurer - Rayma Skinner; Chaplain - Nellie Sacra.

In case you didn’t know, the Moose is much more than a social club. We do many things for our local community and charities, national charities, and our own private charities Mooseheart/Moosehaven. We are always in need of volunteers for activities and funds raisers. With that said, I would like to invite you to our next meeting to personally introduce my self and the new board. The next meeting is June 6 at 7 p.m. If you cannot attend this meeting the next one will be held on June 20 at 7 p.m. The meeting dates and times are always on the calendar in the newsletter. You are always welcome.

Some of our up and coming activities are:

June 1 & July 6 WOTM “Wing Night” – Every five weeks WOTM volunteer their time to serve wings as one of the Moose teams. This is totally voluntary and all tips are donated to WOTM for contribution to our charities. (If you would like to volunteer, just show up by 5 p.m. and we will put you to work.)

June 26 Blood Drive, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Come donate and save a life. If you do not wish to or cannot donate blood and would like to be a part of this event, volunteers are welcome.

4 of July is approaching fast and we need ideas and volunteers for our float to be entered in the annual Prince

th

William County 4 of July Parade. Please attend a meeting to help us with this effort. There will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers

th

soon. Keep an eye out for it.

In closing, I am thrilled to update the condition of Chris Sarna. On Mother’s Day Chris did receive a lung transplant and is recovering at this time. For more information, you can log onto CaringBridge.org Christine Sarna. There is a daily Journal update about her condition. Thank you for all your loyal support and prayers!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope to see some new faces.

Stephenie Collins For Senior Regent

If you cannot attend at meeting and would like to express an idea or concern, you may e-mail me: [email protected].

I will do my best to respond quickly.

DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP NEW MEMBERS. THERE ARE LOTS OF REWARDS AND BENEFITS.

FOR ALL AGES

“THANK YOU”

FROM THE CLUB MANAGER

The new Moose year has started and I know it will be another great year for our lodge. However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank “all” of our members for the support they have shown me over this last year as your club manager.

I would especially like to “Thank” my bartenders who continue to do a great job (most of the time) taking care of our members on a daily basis. I would like to “Thank”

the volunteers who come in and offer up their time and efforts to make “taco night” and “wing nights” the successful nights that they have become.

I also want to thank Todd & Mary “our cleaning crew” and everyday “handy dandy couple” for keeping the lodge clean and fixing the things that break down around the lodge. Please don’t every lose that little red tool bag.

I want to “Thank” Teri McCormick who has made my job so much easier and allowed us to do so much more at the Moose lodge with what we do and offer from the kitchen.

She truly is the “hardest working Moose member” we have in the lodge. Thanks also to my regular volunteers who assist me with the “steak nights” and “chicken & rib” nights by cooking on the outside grill as well as my assistants on Friday night in the kitchen. Dinners could not be done without your help.

Lastly, “thanks” to our Administrator Don O’ for making things in our office and support of our members so much easier. It’s great when you can depend on him for assistance and professionalism in dealing with some of the issues of the lodge that I’m not the best at dealing with.

Thanks, Don.

So let’s go out and have another great year and

make things even better for the members. Thanks everyone.

ORGAN TRANSPLANT

We are all thankful that Chris Sarna received a lung transplant and is doing well. This article will cover what is involved in getting an organ transplant and then next month organ donation will be discussed.

The organ transplant process begins when an organ fails and is not going to recover enough to support life, also known as end-stage organ failure. Some diseases that can lead to end-stage organ failure are: Cardiomyopathy (heart), Cirrhosis (liver), Chronic obstructive pulmonary artery disease (lung), Coronary heart disease (heart), Cystic fibrosis (lung), Diabetes (pancreas), Hepatitis (liver), Hypertension (kidney/heart), Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (lung), Polycystic kidney disease (kidney), and Short gut syndrome (intestine).

After the diagnosis, a referral to a transplant program is needed. The transplant team evaluates the patient to determine if a transplant is feasible. The patient’s other organs must be in good condition and the patient healthy enough for surgery. Once the transplant team determines a patient is a suitable candidate, he/she is added to the national list of all people waiting for a transplant.

As of May 14, 2011, there are 111,029 people on the list although only 72,243 are active. Those that are not active are too ill at this time to undergo transplant.

Once on the transplant list, the wait begins. Waiting can be very stressful because no one knows how long the wait will be. For instance, the median national waiting time for a lung is 141 days; heart, 113 days, liver, 361 days; kidney, 1,219 days. During that wait time, the patient must remain healthy enough to remain on the active transplant list.

The patient must always be available to the transplant team and stay within a certain geographic range. A patient must always have transportation available to get to the hospital if a donor organ becomes available.

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) regulates how organs are allocated to those on the waiting list. Because of specific organ characteristics, including the degree of matching required and the number of hours the organ can be outside the body and still be viable, there is a different policy for each organ.

Once an organ becomes available, the OPTN uses a computer program to prioritize patients waiting for organs. The program eliminates potential patients whose size or ABO type is incompatible with that of a donor. Size is important because the organ must be large enough to help the patient but not so large that the organ does not fit into the body. Just like blood transfusions, blood types of the patient and organ donor must be compatible or the patient will have an allergic reaction.

The program then ranks those remaining potential patients. The ranking will include where the organ is, where the patient is, how much testing is required, how long can the organ be out of the body, and how sick is the patient. It is a delicate balance for the patient: the patient must be sick enough to be on the top of the list but not so sick that he/she will not survive surgery.

After transplant surgery, a new set of concerns arise: (1) Will the organ begin working? (2) Will the organ be rejected?

(3) Will any complications occur? (4) When can I go home and what will I have to do at home? After discharge, the focus will be on staying healthy, nutrition, and medications and their side effects.

• Even years after surgery, doctors will continue to monitor the health of the transplanted organ. Laboratory tests are a regular part of a transplant patient’s life.

• Immunosuppressant medications that stop the body from rejecting the transplanted organ are an important part of post-transplant life. Because the body recognizes the new organ as foreign and sees it as a threat, the immune system attacks it. Drugs suppress the immune system to prevent the body from destroying (rejecting) the organ.

While the suppressed immune system protects the new organ, it puts the body at risk because of a slower reaction in defending against germs. Transplant recipients are more vulnerable to infections and may find it more difficult to recover from infections and illnesses. This concern for infections is especially true for the first six months after surgery but will remain an ongoing concern. Transplant recipients can protect their health by following good prevention practices to avoid illness and injury and by seeking treatment early when illness does occur.

• Transplant recipients usually need to take an array of medications. Some will be new medications prescribed after transplant surgery. Some may be continued from before surgery. Certain medications may be taken several times a day while others are taken only on certain days. Those medications may need to be changed or dosages adjusted every few days or weeks to find the best combinations for maximum benefit and minimum side effects.

Managing medications can be complex and confusing.

• Staying healthy includes eating a balanced diet and exercise.

• Most people are weak after surgery. Transplant recipients must recover both from the operation as well as the illness that caused the need for a transplant. Recovery is a gradual process.

Transplant saves lives! More than 6,500 people a year – about 18 a day – die before an organ ever becomes available. You

may have wondered about donating an organ. Next month, important information you need to consider will be discussed.

NOT A GOOD BYE

I’m not a person who views change lightly. I’ve had two full time and two part time jobs in my life, counting the part time job I have now. Prince William County has been home since 1961. I have lived in the same house almost 26 years.

I say this because, when you read this, I will be a resident of South Carolina. This move has been in the works since I semi-retired three years ago. It’s just time to ge where the pace of life is slower and the winters are warmer.

With family and friends still here, this is not a good bye because we will be coming back often. You can.bet that, when in town, one of the first stops will be the Dale City Moose. The ten years I have spent as an active member have been the best experience of my life. I have seen a group of hard working people turn Dale City Moose into a powerhouse lodge with almost 1,000 members (men and women). One year we were named State Lodge of the Year and nominated with four other lodges for National Lodge of the Year. I travel about 140 days a year and stop by as many clubs as I can. There is no other club as fun and lively as ours. I will be joining Surfside Moose which is only about two miles from my new home. This will be under a dual membership because I will always be a member here at Dale City, the Best Lodge in the World!

See you soon friends,

Don Truslow
