Mission
The mission of the research community of the VU University Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) is the generation and dissemination of new knowledge about the biological, developmental, educational, and social determinants of normal and abnormal human behavior. The primary goals are 1) to develop and maintain high-quality research focusing on excellence and innovation that is recognized both nationally and internationally, and 2) to use this increased knowledge to develop new ways to influence human behavior in clinical, educational and organizational settings.
The strong orientation on our own disciplines of Psychology and Educational Science provides the necessary focus to our research activities. At the same time sufficient scientific mass and transdisciplinary exchange of ideas is achieved by participation in major research VU University institutes, like the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam (www.neurosciencecampus-amsterdam.nl), the EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research (www.emgo.nl), Phoolan Devi (www.phoolandevi.vu.nl), and the LEARN!
centre for research and expertise in education (www.learn.vu.nl) and through national collaborative networks often backed by shared grants (e.g. the FES programme Brain and Cognition, or the NWO center of excellence for medical system biology, CMSB). Extended partnerships with societal stakeholders provide a bridge for our students to transfer their academic training to society at large, for instance mental health care centres (Mentrum, Parnassia, GGZ inGeest, InGeest, Institute for Child and Youth Psychiatry) the Trimbos Institute Advice on Suicide Prevention to the Ministry of Health, AFC Ajax, KNVB, Emma Kinderziekenhuis Amsterdam and the Alzheimer centre of the VU medical centre.
Continuous exchange with, and exposure to, the international research community is achieved through multiple well-established collaborations with research institutes in the US, Europe, Asia and Oceania.
These anchors in the international science community facilitate international recruitment of top talent and ensure opportunities for prolonged stays with collaborators in these international research institutes for master and PhD students.
The research at FPP is embedded in 10 focused research programmes:
1. Genes, Behaviour and Health (prof. dr. D Boomsma) 2. Attention and Performance (prof. dr. J Theeuwes) 3. Mapping the Brain (prof. dr. E Scherder)
4. Cognition, Affect, Behaviour, and Intervention in Mental Disorder (prof dr. P Cuijpers) 5. Social and Emotional Development (prof. dr. H Koot)
6. Trust, Leadership and Cooperation (prof. dr. P van Lange & prof. dr. M. van Vugt) 7. Educational Neuropsychology: Brain & Learning (prof. dr. L. Krabbendam) 8. Challenges to Childrearing Relationships (prof. dr. C Schuengel)
9. Education for the Good Life in a Diverse Society (prof. dr. D de Ruyter & prof. dr. B van Oers) 10. Knowledge Development between Theory and Practice (prof. dr. J Beishuizen)
Six of these programmes focus on research in Psychology, and four on research in Educational Science.
Together these programmes use a wide range of research methods ranging from qualitative historical and descriptive to quantitative observational and experimental research.
In the remainder of this annual report the 2013 research output of these programs will be described in detail. In this introduction, we will first focus on the overall results of our research, and then describe the
William James Graduate School which houses our research master and PhD student programmes, the FPP research infrastructure, and our mechanisms for quality monitoring and improvement.

The annual budget of the Faculty of Psychology and Education was 30 million € in 2013. Nineteen million € were spent entirely on research, with the lion share in PhD projects. The FPP research budget typically derives for 50% from external funding sources, including NWO MaGW project and programme grants, ZonMW TOP and programme grants, NWO Innovantion Scheme (‘Vernieuwingsimpuls’) grants, European Union grants, grants from public-private funding agencies like the Netherlands Brain Foundation, the ‘Fonds Psychische Gezondheid’, or the ‘Stichting tot Steun Nederland’, private funding by, for instance, insurance companies, and grants from charitable foundations like Pink Ribbon. Despite the increased competition and diminishing funds, the amount of acquired external funds remained fairly stable at more than 9 million euro.
The Faculty of Psychology and Education has several lauretates of different awards and prizes, both national as international. Below we have summarized these results for 2013 and the two years before.
Furthermore, the overview concludes with a list of memberships of prestigious commitees in which affilites of FPP participate.

All research training of master and PhD students is organized within the FPP William James Graduate School (WJGS). The School comprises of two scientist-practitioner, five research-oriented master programmes, and a PhD training trajectory. The latter two play a crucial role in attaining our core scientific goals. First, in collaboration with other VU Campus partners,
Psychology and Education offer 5 WJGS Research Master programmes (in English):
Clinical and Developmental Psychopathology (joint programme departments of Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Clinical Child and Family Studies, and Educational Neuroscience)
Cognitive Neuropsychology (joint programme departments of Clinical Neurosychology and Cognitive Psychology)
Social Psychology (department of Social and Organisational Psychology)
Cognitive Science trajectory in the Artificial Intelligence Master (InterFaculty programme of the department of Cognitive Psychology, Faculty of Psychology and Education, and the department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Sciences).
Neurosciences (joint programme by the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, the department of Biological Psychology in the Faculty of Psychology and Education and the VU University Medical Centre – embedded in the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam).
The goal of the WJGS PhD training and education programme is to train every PhD-student in being an independent researcher in the disciplines of Psychology or Educational Science. The programme is complementary to the primary guidance and supervision of the promoters and supervisors, but a transparent set of protocols allows the director of research to monitor the progress of all PhD projects within the faculty. In the tailored package of courses for the PhD students, more than 60% focuses on advanced data analysis and transferable skills (e.g. writing & presenting, career development, time management) taught in on-Campus centres or by WJGS research staff. The remaining 40% of the courses is obtained from various KNAW accredited national graduate schools or research networks (EPOS, ONWAR, ICO, IOPS, ISED, KLI, NOSTER, CARE, and EPP) in which our researchers participate. The main mission of the William James Graduate School is to offer a stimulating, high-quality and well- organized training environment for talented Dutch and foreign master and PhD students in order to create a next generation of researchers and scientist-practioners that can deal with major societal themes like mental health, child rearing practices, education policy, social cohesion, and leadership.
Research infrastructure
FPP maintains a strong infrastructure for research. The basement of the Psychology and Education building houses a large experimental facility with:
Interview rooms / Calling centres to perform diagnostic face-to-face and telephone interviews regarding mental and somatic health (e.g. Composite International Diagnostic Interview), life style, attitudes, and behavioural problems.
Sound-attenuated PC-equipped cubicles with calibrated monitors to perform reaction time studies and computer-based neuropsychological testing, IQ testing, or questionnaires on personality, coping style, psychiatric complaints.
Three fully equipped EEG labs electrically shielded cabins with 64 to 128 channel Biosemi EEG recording equipment, fast data-acquisition and stimulus presentation PCs, multiple-sized electrocaps, and a well-kept supply of consumables (2 Biosemi, 1 Synamps).
Three Eye Link eye tracking systems, an SR Research Eye Link 2 head mounted eye tracker with a 500 Hz sampling resolution and an SR Research EyeLink 1000 which is head supported and can track the eye and the pupil with 1000 Hz.
Fully equipped observation lab with a one-way screen, 5 camera’s and recording and control devices for observation of infant and parental behavior (e.g. during the Strange Situation Test).
Four modern computer laboratories. One 15-cubicle laboratory, one 11-cubicle laboratory, one 9- cubicle laboratory and a 5-cubicle laboratory. The latter is allocated exclusively to Research Master students to provide them with hands-on experience in conducting experimental research and to facilitate the accomplishments of their research projects and thesis. Half of these cubicles
is equipped with a fast PC and monitor. The labs provide the perfect environment for computerized experiments (e.g., using reaction time paradigms).
Licenses for state-of-the-art research software are available (e.g., Authorware, E-prime), including packages that enable on-line research (Qualtrics, Inquisit).
Two fully equipped cardiovascular labs for experimentation on cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system reactivity to a variety of mental (speeded RT tasks, role playing, public speaking) and physical (hand-grip, bicycle ergometry) stressors. Both labs have a Biopac recording system with various modules for ECG, ICG, respiration, skin conductance, and an automated cuff-based blood pressure device and a BMEYE device for continuous finger blood pressure recording.
Ambulatory Recording WJGS researchers have developed its own Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS, www.vu-ams.nl) which enables 24 hour ambulatory recordings of peripheral physiology and body movement. This home-brew system is used worldwide by many research groups to study stress and emotion in both laboratory and naturalistic settings. Over 100 publications feature the VU-AMS in research on a range of topics and in samples that include young children, adolescents, and adults in both healthy and patient cohorts.
30 Laptops, 50 IPads & 45 Ipods for field experiments in school settings or at home assessments of, for instance, IQ, mental health or the degree of memory loss in Alzheimer nursing homes.
Brain imaging facilities Through extensive collaborations within the NCA and the Amsterdam Spinoza centre, the WJGS researchers and their students have access to a 1.5 T, a 3T Siemens Sonata, and a Philips Intera 3T MRI scanner and an Elekta NeuroMag MEG scanner.
Large data storage facilities MRI, EEG/MEG and genomic data require 60 to 80 terabytes of storage and the WJGS has dedicated servers with back-up facilities specifically for these huge data sets.
Cluster computer and GRID access, through the SARA facilities and FPP’s own computing server WJGS researchers have access to cluster and GRID computing for computationally intensive analyses.
Large-scale genotyping facilities through collaboration within the NCA and with the Leiden University Medical centre (prof. dr. E Slagboom, prof. dr. GJ van Ommen), WJGS members have access to digital gene expression and to genotyping facilities for microsatellites, VNTRs, SNPs and CNVs for genetic linkage and associations studies.
13 refrigerators, with temperature control systems, to store biological material for research.
An important asset to the WJGS research programmes is the support of the Technical Department (ITM) of the Faculty of Psychology and Education. This department has a longstanding reputation in supplying researchers with creative state-of-the-art software and hardware solutions to their experimentation needs.
There is extensive support of the hardware in the experimental rooms (including back-up of experimental data) and all rooms are kept certified according to CE safety norms. During experimentation, there is always a person from the Technical Department on call for trouble shooting.
In addition, they provide software support for many commercial packages like E-prime, Authorware, Acknowledge, EEGLAB, SPM5, FSL, Matlab, Qualtrix, Mplus, SPSS, R and many dedicated subroutines have been programmed by the department to deal with specific signal analysis problems or with the large scale database management required, for example, for the interactive internet-based therapies for anxiety and depression.
As FPP has a partial β-status it can set aside at least 310k€ each year for innovation of and continued investments in the above research infrastructure. All research staff, including PhD students, can apply for this fund to purchase new equipment or receive a partial refund of the costs for MRI and MEG scans, genotyping, or hormonal assessments in high-quality laboratories.
Research Quality Monitoring and Improvement
To ensure the highest quality of FPP research staff we use ambitious criteria for promotion and tenure.
The tenure track system stipulates a uniform set of criteria for promotion and fixed contracts from the assistant to full professor level. These criteria emphasize, in keeping with the Zeitgeist, quantity and impact of research output, scientific reputation and success in grant acquisition. The transparent coupling of career steps to scientific (teaching) performance in the tenure track contract leads to the selection of highly motivated and well performing researchers and teachers.
FPP has its own Talent Programme which allows PhD students extended visits at the many international collaborators of the FPP research staff. Students apply for these extended visits (1 to 6 months) by an application form that lists the host institution, the local supervisor, a detailed work plan for the experimental work, data analysis or paper writing at the host institution. The scientific and ethical review committee reviews these applications and advises the director of the WJGS on whether to award these grants. Grants cover travel and all additional costs of a stay abroad. The Talent Programme also rewards departments that allow a finished PhD to attempt a VENI grant or a comparable personal grant at the EU Marie Curie or NIH programmes. Departments of successful applicants can recoup a 3 month post-doc salary from the Talent Programme budget.
The quality of PhD research is monitored within the WJGS. A major attribute of the PhD programme of the WJGS is that the main stakeholders, the PhD student and supervision team, are given the largest responsibility in the choice of courses. This relative freedom is balanced by appropriate quality monitoring procedures. For each PhD project, a training and supervision plan has to be submitted.
Different parts of the training and supervision plan are being reviewed by different bodies: The scientific and ethical review committee judges the scientific content and feasibility of the project and ensures that appropriate ethical standards are upheld. This may include referring a proposal to the Central Committee on Research involving Human Subjects (CCMO) or the CCMO-accredited VU University Medical Ethical Committee (METc). PhD projects that have been externally reviewed (e.g. NWO, ESF) receive a
‘light’ review focused mainly on the ethical aspects. The Faculty’s financial department always ensures that sufficient funds have been requested for the research, including an appropriate bench fee for experimental studies in PhD projects. The exact height depends on the project, but a bench fee of 5600 € per project is used as the general guideline. The Director of the WJGS reviews the training and education part and makes sure that all proposed courses were reviewed by the WJGS curriculum committee. The WJGS examination committee finally ensures the proper completion of the course work in the PhD programme before the doctorate is granted. To increase the percentage of PhDs that graduate on time (e.g., within 4 years) a PhD bonus system has been put in place. When a PhD student graduates on time he or she will receive a € 4000 bonus that can be spent freely.
One component in research quality monitoring is the systematic collection of research output and input data by the Board of the Faculty. The Board of the Faculty uses this information to evaluate the quality, productivity, relevance, and vitality & feasibility of its 10 research programs, and shares this data with the VU University Research Institutes in which FPP departments participate. For instance, the number of publications , taking into account the quality of the journal (i.e., SCI/SSCI impact factor), is weighed by the amount of money invested the research staff employed. If the average performance of a programme (not an individual) lags behind the expected outcomes for several years in a row, then the Board will take measures to improve performance. Expectations are based on the performance across all research programmes.
All research programs are evaluated under the VSNU Standard Evaluation Protocol, as carried out by QANU. In 2013, the research programs in Educational Science received their external review report.
Highlights of the external committee’s assessment were their favorable judgment on the faculty’s and VU
University’s research policy, focusing on interfaculty collaboration, as well as the very good to excellent ratings that VU programs received on the quality dimensions, as can be seen in table 3 below.
