iPad Classroom
Installation & Deployment
Important information
Our aim is to carry out your installation as quickly and efficiently as possible
whilst utilising Apple’s recommended procedures for the deployment and
ongoing management of your iPad classroom. We manage the whole process
for you - but we do require your assistance pre-installation. Please read this
document carefully and return the completed form as quickly as you can.
Pre-installation Tasks
Apple Profile Manager
Profile Manager simplifies deployment, configuration and the ongoing management of your iPad classroom. It provides one place where you can control everything: manage profiles, configure system settings, enforce restrictions, set password policies and more. Profile Manager also simplifies the distribution of institution-licensed apps and books purchased through the App Store Volume Purchase Programme.
Before we can install your iPad classroom using Profile Manager we must complete the following tasks together:
1. Internet Access
There are a range of network ports and website addresses that must be accessible from your school network before the on-site deployment can take place. We are happy to liaise with your technician or internet service provider to help you ensure this happens.
2. App Store Volume Purchase Programme (VPP)
The Volume Purchase Programme allows you to purchase most apps at half price and distribute them over the air using Profile Manager. VPP also enables you to re-assign a license to a new user via managed distribution.
To get started, you must nominate a Supervisor and a Facilitator. This can be the same person but does require two unique email addresses. Once you have completed this form you can enrol into the programme and subsequently request your free Apple apps.
3. Apple Identities (IDs)
In order for Profile Manager to distribute apps over the air, each iPad must have it’s own unique Apple ID which in turn requires a unique email address. Therefore you must create a range of email addresses and Apple IDs for your iPad classroom.
1. Internet Access
Access to ports and services
For us to be able to remotely manage and install Apps on the iPads using Profile Manager we will need the following ports and services to be accessible from inside your network.
OS X Server: Ports used by Profile Manager
To use Profile Manager you will need access to the Apple Push Notification service (APNs) http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4264?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You will also need access to all the Apple URLs;
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Services Test App
If you have an iPhone, there is an App that you can use to test this. It’s called Services Test and costs 69p. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/services-test/id663823983?mt=8
The General Outbound test that it performs, will tell you whether the iPhone, when on your wireless network, with proxies applied (if you use them), can access the Apple Push Servers and the URLs required. It will identify all the necessary TCP ports and the URLs for http access.
Services Test App
Access to Apple resources
In the longer term you should ensure that all the necessary ports and URLs at Apple are accessible. They are required for the ongoing maintenance of all Apple devices on your network. They are not all required for the install to
proceed.
Some are listed here; iTunes Store

"Many of Apple's servers use load balancing. Your devices will not always connect to the same public IP address for notifications. The entire 17.0.0.0/8 address block is assigned to Apple, so it's best to allow this range in your firewall settings.”
2. App Store Volume Purchase Programme (VPP)
VPP enrolment needs to be completed prior to the installation; VPP is used for bulk purchase of Apps for the iPads from Apple;
This should be commenced at the least 10 working before the installation date.
We recommend setting up a new set of generic e-mail addresses specifically for use with VPP. In this way they will not be attached to one specific person by name. The e-mail addresses on this page are examples only, but yours should follow this kind of format.
Create an e-mail account [email protected] to setup VPP as the VPP Supervisor. You must not use this e-mail address to setup a normal Apple ID.
Use [email protected] to setup the VPP access
A special Apple ID will be created during the enrolment process, associated to this email account.
Do not use this Apple ID for anything else. Do not use this Apple ID to sign into iTunes.
Main Page:
http://www.apple.com/uk/education/volume-purchase-program Enrolment Page:
http://edu-vpp.apple.com/asvpp_pmenroll/
Confirmation of the VPP enrolment by Apple can take 5 working days or more.
Once the confirmation of the enrolment has been received the VPP Supervisor can log in and add facilitators. Create e-mail addresses for the VPP facilitators who will be doing the purchasing of Apps;
If there is only one purchaser it could be [email protected]
If you have multiple facilitators for different departments create separate e-mail addresses. For example;
[email protected] [email protected]
The Apple IDs for the facilitators will be created during the sign up process.
Do not use this Apple ID for anything else. Do not use this Apple ID to sign into iTunes.
The facilitators can then login and start to purchase Apps VPP Store:

Obtaining the free iWorks/iLife Apps from Apple
If you want to distribute the iLife and iWorks Apps via Mobile device Management rather than have the users download them all to each device, then follow the instructions in the linked page below.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6182
Profile Manager requires us to add a Token from VPP to link it with your VPP account. As long as you are already enrolled this is a simple case of logging into VPP and then downloading the token, we will do this as part of the installation process.
3. Apple Identities (IDs)
Each iPad needs an Apple ID.
Each Apple ID is based on an e-mail address.
The process of e-mail address and Apple ID creation needs to be completed prior to the installation. Only a limited number of Apple IDs can be created at any one time, so you should start the process as soon as possible.
E-mail address creation
You will need a number of e-mail address.
One main one for administration of the whole setup. For example;
This should be completely separate from any e-mail addresses or Apple IDs used for VPP. An e-mail address for each iPad.
Ideally aliased to the [email protected] e-mail address. In this way all the mail can be picked up from a single address. For example;
[email protected] [email protected]
Apple ID creation
Once you have the e-mail addresses setup and accessible you can begin creating the Apple IDs. The Apple ID creation process is detailed in this document.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534
These Apple IDs do not need to have a credit card attached to them as they will not be used for purchasing Apps. Following the instructions in the article above will allow the creation of Apple IDs with out the requirement for credit card details.
We would recommend using the same password, rescue e-mail, rescue questions and contact details for each account. This information is highly sensitive and should be stored securely and not widely known.
You will need access to the mail accounts for each Apple ID to be able to verify the Apple ID creation.
Apple limit the number of Apple IDs that can be created at any one time. Try creating 4 or 5 at time twice a day. If you create too many in one go Apple will block you and the creation process of the last Apple ID will fail. You will then have to wait for the block to clear (at least 24 hours) before you can create the next batch of Apple IDs.
Pre-installation Contact Form
* The email addresses we use for your VPP Supervisor & Facilitator must not be associated to an Apple ID. If you have any difficulty in filling out this form or require further clarification, please contact your Regional Education Advisor or our technical team. We will be pleased to help.
