AS400

Quest Management Pack (QMP) for AS400 (for both Operations Manager 2007 and 2005 Editions) provides AS400 integration with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 (OpsMgr), Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 (MOM), Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (SCCM) and System Management Server 2003 (SMS).

Enterprises that rely on the AS400 environment know how important it is to have access to the AS400 messages from their systems/LPARS. By providing AS400 messages to the OpsMgr/MOM environment, customers who rely on Microsoft servers and AS400 systems are able to view both environments from a single enterprise management framework, OpsMgr/MOM. In addition, customers will be able to perform automation on the AS400 messages by using the rich set of features provided with OpsMgr/MOM in combination with the Quest Software AS400 solution. With this tool, you are able to issue commands to the AS400 right from within OpsMgr/MOM. This can be done right from the OpsMgr/MOM GUI or from an automation script. In addition to automation, the Quest Software AS400 solution provides a simple yet powerful filtering mechanism on the AS400 messages so you have complete control over which messages get displayed in the OpsMgr/MOM console. Basic AS400 performance metrics are also collected into OpsMgr/MOM which can then be graphed in real-time and/or post-analyzed for capacity planning purposes. OpsMgr/MOM reports can also be used against the AS400 collected data. If you need all your hardware and software assets in a single repository, you can use Microsoft SCCM/SMS to collect information about all your AS400 hardware and software assets (including PTFs!).

The Quest Software AS400 solution ties the Windows environment (OpsMgr/MOM) to the AS400 environment using IBM’s Client Access SDK/APIs (please see the architecture section below).

AS400 Alerts

Any message from any AS400 Message Queue. “Out of the box”, every QSYSOPR message is captured and turned into a OpsMgr/MOM alert (again, you may incorporate ANY AS400 Message Queue into the OpsMgr/MOM environment). The user friendly “Message filter database” allows you to filter this collection of messages so operations only sees true AS400 alerts. Alerts are collected from the AS400 using a Message Queue break-handler program (written in CL and the source code is provided in the event you would like to customize).

AS400 Critical Processes

Using OpsMgr/MOM (via the Quest AS400 solution), you can monitor for AS400 critical processes (AS400 jobs). Combined with automatically restarting any critical process, you can ensure your AS400 is running all necessary jobs for your environment.

Quest Software AS400 Architecture

Quest Software implemented AS400 monitoring/automation for System Center products using Microsoft technologies and languages in combination with the IBM Client Access SDK. The AS400 solution also requires an AS400 break-handler program (job) to be running on the AS400. Since IBM Client Access is part of the base software package that comes with the AS400 Operating System, it makes sense to utilize this interface in combination with the power of the Microsoft technologies and languages.

Architecture Specifics

The component architecture for the Quest Software solution is shown above. This product conforms to the standards put forth by the DMTF and implemented by Microsoft on all of their modern operating systems. These standards (known as Common Information Model (CIM)) allow a heterogeneous enterprise data center the ability to monitor and control all of the systems contained within it. Currently, Quest Software’s role in this implementation is to provide the AS400 interface for the Microsoft System Center products.
