One hundred and fiftyyearsago, nurses wereunpaid, untrained, and unpopular, but then Florence Nightingale made nursing into a profession. The methods sheintroduced in the 1850swerecopied all overthe world, and nownursing isa career with athree- or[our-year training, qualifications, grades, unions, and pensIOns.

In Britain, every nurse isonagradc. The grade depends onexperience and skills, and each grade hasdifferent

responsibilities and pay.On thebottom grades arcunqualified auxiliary nurses who do theroutine work on hospital

wards. On thetopgrades are nursing officers, who are usually administrators. Auxiliary nursesareonthebottom grades, but student nurses gct thelowcst pay. However, students don't stayat the bottom ofthepayscale forever. When they qualify, theystan working ona middle grade. Modern wheelchairs are a big improvement onthe firstwheelchairs, which were just wheelbarrows like theones we use in the garden. ProfessorStephen Hawking'swheelchair, for example,is a vehicle, an office, and a domesticservant, all inone.

The first real wheelchair was owned byKing Philip ofSpainin the sixteenth century.Ithadthe latest

technology - removable arm restsand leg rests- andwasmadeof wood. Modern wheelchairs aremadefrom thesame strong, light metal as aircraft, and electric enginesmeanthat users don't needto use their armsor havesomeone to push.

Wheelchair design madea big jumpforward with theinvention ofa computer program that respondstovoicecommands. Foruserswho cannot speak, computer technology also makesitpossible to

manoeuvre amachineby small movements ofthe head, hand, tongue, and breath.

Some things thatable-bodied people do without thinking can bea major problemfordisabledpeople, for example climbing stairs, entering and leaving buildings, andusingtoilets.Awheelchair caneither help or makethe problems worse. Sobefore choosing awheelchair therearemanyquestions youhave to ask:Will thewheelchair beself propelled ormanual? Which ismore important, manoeuvrability orstability? Howdoyougetin and outof it7 TheiBOTclaims tosolvemanyofthe problems of standardwheelchairs. Itis ahighlyadvanced, all-purpose wheelchairthat can travelupstairs, raise the userto reachhighshelves, and balance on two wheels in the shower.Itisgreat funtouse, but beware theprice- theiBOTcosts as muchasaluxurycar.

4 Ramachandra Kolluru is a pharmacist. __

There isan old joke thatdoctors go to school to learn how to write badly, and

nurses go to school tolearn howto read

doctors' handwriting. There is truth inthe

joke-computer analysis of the

handwriting of medical staffshows thai

doctors' writing isalot worse than thatof

nurses and administrative staff.Mayhe it's

because doctors are alwaysunder

pressure of time that theywritevery fast.

The habit starts when they aremedical students and gets worse astime passes.

Computer analysis shows that generally, medical staffare careful withnumbers. However, theytend toformletters of the

alphabet badly. When drug names lookverysimilar, bad

handwriting can mean patients get the wrong medicine, A

young girl nearlydied when she wasgiven Methimazole instead of Metolazone (one is forhigh blood pressure and the other is

forthyroid problems). Andin1999,an American cardiologist. Ramachandra Kolluru, wrote a prescription sobadly that the pharmacist gave apatient thewrong medicine. This timethe

patient did die and a court fined thedoctor 225,000USdollars.

bad handwriting or abbreviations which nobody understands.

Bad handwriting also causes delays, which are expensive and wasteful. There aremany technulogical solutions forthe problem, and though digital technology can't improve handwriting, it can improve the situation.
