Swinburne’s Professional Year Programs have been specifically

designed for international student graduates seeking an additional

pathway from university to employment in Australia. You can gain

valuable experience in the workplace to enhance your qualification.

Students also have free online access to IELTS exam preparation

material as well as ongoing career mentoring after graduation.

Professional Year graduates also have access services provided by

Swinburne’s Careers and Employment Unit, including free seminars,

résumé checks, interview practice sessions and access to an online

employment database.

66 per cent of Swinburne’s Professional Year graduates

were employed in their field within six months of completing

the program (Graduate survey 2011)

Program structure

Students spend the first half of the program undertaking two concurrent units of study. Classes are held during business hours for two days per week. Students then undertake their 12-week internship, as well as an online unit.

Accounting

Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting (SMIPA)

SMIPA has been developed by Swinburne College in conjunction with CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants (CA) and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).

Both programs have both been approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

IT Governance, Ethics and Strategic

Business Frameworks

(Computer science students only)

This online unit is delivered by the ACS and explores the role of information technology within and between organisations.

for simple projects

■ identify legal requirements and constraints

imposed on a project

■ develop a working knowledge of ethics,

standards and professional practice

■ review an information systems strategy

and how it supports an organisation’s goals.

Swinburne’s Professional Year internships provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge and gain new skills in the Australian workplace.

Internship placements are organised by Swinburne College. We match your skills and objectives with a suitable host organisation to help you get the most out of your internship. Students are placed in a range of professional fields, including:

bookkeeping and financial reporting work.

She also helped out with basic administrative

duties. over time she took on self-managed

super fund accounting work.

We believe this is a fantastic program for both

Australian companies, and for the interns. It

helps to break down some of the barriers that

exist when considering someone for a role

Application information

Entry requirements

■ a bachelor or master degree in accounting

or ICT from an Australian institution; students must have completed at least two years study in Australia

■ an overall IELTS result of 6.0

(no band below 6.0)

■ a skills assessment from the ACS, CPA,

CA or IPA. These bodies are authorised to assess students’ qualifications and experience in relation to applications for skilled migration

■ a Skilled – Graduate (Temporary) visa

(subclass 485) or a Bridging Visa A; student visa holders are not eligible. Students must also attend an interview as part of the application process.

I did not know much about the real world

of accounting. Now I can apply my theoretical
