Chair’s!Welcome!

Since&becoming&Chair&of&the&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&Alliance&last&year,&I&have&seen&at&first<hand&what&has& been&achieved&by&the&pooling&of&resources,&ideas,&energy&and&commitment.& The&Alliance&was&always&intended&to&be&greater&than&the&sum&of&its&parts,&and&this&year&has&shown& how&together&we&can&be&more&effective,&more&resourceful&and&more&cost&effective&than&we&can&on& our&own.& Partnerships&are&never&easy,&to&work&properly&they&require&people&to&give&things&up&for&the&greater& good,&to&relinquish&a&bit&of&control,&to&recognise&that&others&may&do&things&better,&and&that&more& money&doesn’t&always&mean&more&power.& The&Alliance&is&able&to&use&the&clout&of&its&partners&alongside&the&agility&of&a&small&organisation,&so&it& can&respond&swiftly&to&needs&as&they&present&themselves.& The&Alliance&is&making&a&difference&to&the&lives&of&people&with&dementia&and&their&carers&across& Norfolk&and&Suffolk,&whether&it’s&training&dementia&care&coaches,&stimulating&dementia&friendly& communities&or&helping&join&up&the&dots&of&the&many&agencies&and&supporting&them&in&working& together.& By&the&time&we&reach&our&late&80s&one&on&5&of&us&will&have&dementia&–&as&we&all&live&longer&this&means& many&of&us.&It&is&still&a&word&that&strikes&fear&into&people.&Our&job&is&to&reduce&that&stigma&by& increasing&the&understanding&of&dementia.&It&is&also&to&make&sure&that&people&with&dementia&are& treated&with&dignity,&with&respect&and&with&kindness¬&only&by&those&who&specialise&in&working&with& people&with&dementia,&but&in&other&settings,&care&homes,&hospitals,&GP&surgeries,&and&out&there&in&our& communities.& It’s&a&big&task,&but&everyone&has&a&part&to&play,&and&the&great&thing&in&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&is,&they&are& playing&it.&&

This&has&been&another&productive&and&fruitful&year&for&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&Dementia&Alliance& despite&the&challenges&of&balancing&the&competing&demands&of&our&inwardly&focused&activities,& supporting&the&existing&partner&organisations&and&programmes&and&developing&and&facilitating& delivery&of&the&Dementia&Care&Coaches&and&Dementia&Friendly&Communities;&with&the&more& externally&directed&work&to&continue&to&build&our&profile&and&reputation&as&a&growing®ional&Centre& of&Excellence&for&dementia&related&innovation&and&activity.&&& Primarily&due&to&the&success&of&our&Alliance,&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&were&selected&to&be&the&lead&‘node’&for& dementia&for&the&Eastern&Academic&Health&Science&Network&(EAHSN)&and&Health&Education&East&of& England&(HEEoE)&when&they&formed&at&the&start&of&the&year.&&As&a&result,&we&have&been&working& closely&with&both&organisations&to&help&develop&their&structures,&strategies&and&plans&and&disseminate& elements&of&the&innovative&work&the&Alliance&has&already&successfully&delivered.&&& The&true&cost/benefit&of&the&wider®ional&engagement&to&individual&NSDA&partner&organisations&is& difficult&to&quantify.&&As&HEEoE&has&been&NSDA’s&single&biggest&external&funder&and&continues&to&offer& significant&future&funding&opportunities,&it&was&deemed&prudent&to&remain&aligned&as&closely&as& possible.&&However,&the&EAHSN&has&seen&it’s&predicted&budget&slashed&and&appears&to&be&drawing& back&from&the&initial&nodal&model&to&a&more¢ralized&Cambridge&based&operation,&both&of&which& suggests&that&it&is&likely&to&have&fewer&opportunities&to&offer&the&Alliance&than&was&originally&hoped.&& In&light&if&this,&the&Board&may&wish&to&consider&how&Alliance&time&and&effort&should&be&apportioned& between&internal&and&external&focused&activities&in&future.&& Internally,&the&Alliance’s&main&effort&has&been&the&project&design,&development&and&management&of& the&Dementia&Care&Coach&programme,&which&is&proving&to&be&incredibly&popular&with&students&and& their&line&managers&alike.&&In&many&areas,&the&qualitative&and&quantitative&feedback&on&the&course&has& exceeded&expectations&and&we&are&now&leading&discussions&with&the&Workforce&Partnership&about& potential&future&evolutions&as&part&of&the&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&Workforce&Transformation&Programme.&& There&has&been&a&lot&going&on&in&the&Alliance&during&the&last&12&months&of&which&I&am&incredibly& proud&but,&conscious&of&the&competing&demands&on&your&time,&I’ve&been&selective&in&the&themes&and& activities&covered&by&the&report&and&tried&to&keep&the&content&to&a&digestible&size.&&I’ll&be&happy&to& expand&on&this&and&answer&any&questions&when&the&Board&meets&on&the&7th&of&May.& ! !Willie Cruickshank

In&May,&NSDA&launched&its&DEMentia!skills!STaff!Audit!foR!Training!needs&(DEMSTART)&Hub&hosted&
within&the&UEA.&&The&hub&was&conceived&and&developed&as&a&facility&to&support&NSDA&partners&in& designing,&facilitating&and&analyzing&qualitative&and&quantitative&surveys,&audits&and&research&specific& to&the&dementia&workforce&in&Norfolk&&&Suffolk.&& The&first&piece&of&work&involved&working&with&NHS&trusts&to&develop&and&facilitate&a&common&Carer’s& CQUIN&questionnaire&across&NSDA&providers.&&The&second&major&piece&of&work&examined&the&attitude& of&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&GPs&(28%&contributed)&to&the&diagnosis&of&Dementia&and&what&actions&they&think& would&drive&up&diagnosis&rates.&&Publication&of&the&associated&research&paper&was&widely&covered&by& regional&media&and&continues&to&inform&the&national&policy&debate&on&diagnosis&and&post&diagnostic& support.&http://www.uea.ac.uk/mac/comm/media/press/2014/April/dementia<norfolk<suffolk& & &&&&&&&&&&&Responses&from&GPs&on&attitude&to&diagnosing&Dementia&& The&Audit&Hub&is¤tly&completing&NSDA’s&training&needs&analysis&of&Primary&Care&staff&(with&262& participants)&across&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&including&information&on&their&preferred&options&for&education& and&training&delivery.&&This&will&be&published&shortly.&&The&last&piece&of&work&to&be&undertaken&by&the& Hub&is&a&very&brief&piece&of&qualitative&analysis&of&the&information&used&by&loved&ones&to&determine& which&residential&care&provider&to&choose&for&a&relative&(70%<80%&of&residential&care&residents&have& dementia).&&In&its&simplest&form&this&is&a&choice&between&cost,&location&and&quality,&often&made& without&the&necessary&knowledge&and&at&a&difficult&and&traumatic&time.&&Our&Dementia&Care&Coaches& currently&working&in&the&residential&care§or&will&capture&this&data.&&&&&&&&&&& June!–!Dual!Purpose!Dementia!Register!(via!Academic!Health!Science!Network)!! In&June,&NSDA&was&confirmed&as&the&lead&entity&for&the&Eastern&Academic&Health&Science&Network’s& Dementia&Integrated&Study&Team.&&This&role&brings&with&it&£20K&p/a&compensation&in&recognition&of& the&NSDA&Director’s&time&and&commitment.&&The&Integrated&Study&Group&(ISG)&is,&in&effect,&the& membership&of&the&Strategic&Dementia&Advisory&Group&(incorporating&the&other&dementia&alliances& currently&being&developed&with&the&help&of&£10K&of&EAHSN&seed<corn&funding&each).&& The&ISG&shared&the&view&of&the&NSDA&Board&that&there&would&be&significant&benefits&in&the& development&of&a&dual&purpose&Dementia&Register&to&assist&in&delivering&integrated&care&and&also& increasing&numbers&of&people&with&dementia&involved&in&research&trials.&&Initial&scoping&work&on&the& development&of&such&a®ister&is&being&conducted&by&NSFT&under&the&direction&of&NSDA&and&funded& by&the&EAHSN.&&As&well&as&engaging&with&NSDA&partners,&this&consultative&work&is&also&involving&key& regional&medical&technology&partners&including&BT&and&Philips.&&An&investment&gateway&report&from& NSFT&is&due&imminently;&it’s&findings&and&recommendations&will&be&presented&to&the&EAHSN&Board& with®ards&to&the&next&steps&for&the&project.&&It&is&the&only&dementia&project&funded&by&the&EAHSN.&
July!–!Denison!Culture!Survey& Organisational&culture&is&known&to&play&a&significant&role&in&the&quality&of&care&provided&within&a& health&or&care&provider.&&In&July,&the&anonymised&results&of&the&Denison&Corporate&Culture&Surveys,& which&NSDA&had&facilitated&on&behalf&of&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&Workforce&Partnership,&were& presented&to&a&meeting&of&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&Leadership&Group.&& The&surveys&were&conducted&in&all&5´&trusts,&one&community&trust&and&one&mental&health&trust,& with&responses&from&over&5000&staff.&&There&were&a&significant&number&of&key&themes&that&emerged& as&being&common&to&all&trusts.&&&&&&&& Dension&is&a&widely&used&international&cultural&benchmarking&process,&which&objectively&compares&an& organisation&with&others&within&an&extensive&database&of&organisations&from&all§ors&and& demonstrating&different&levels&of&performance.&Prior&to&the&group&presentation,&the&output&from&the& survey&was&individually&presented&to&each&Trust&Chief&Executive&with&a&view&of&how&their& organisation's&culture&could&be&impacting&on&its¤t&level&of&performance&and&longer<term& success.&&The&aim&of&the&study&was&to&help&inform&leaders/managers&at&all&levels&to&identify&the&most& appropriate&activity&and&allocation&of&resources&in&order&to&achieve&their&organisation's&strategic&and& tactical&objectives.&&& Clearly,&the&real&benefit&of&the&surveys&will&only&be&realised&if&the&information&it&generated&is&acted& upon.&&This&final&aspect&is&out&with&the&remit&of&the&NSDA&element&of&the&programme.&& &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& & &&&&&&Aggregated&Denison&Results&for&NSDA&Partners&& August!–!Innovative!Use!of!Technologies!(GameScape!and!iTunes!App)! NSDA&have&formed&a&very&successful&partnership&with&California&based&e<learning&developers,& Toolwire,&delivering&innovative&computer&based&e<learning&in&the&field&of&Dementia&care.

Toolwire& are&a&market&leader&in&the&provision&of&experiential&learning&solutions&and&their&GameScapes&are&the& latest&addition&to&the&portfolio&of&innovative&learning&solutions.&&These&highly&engaging&products& immerse&users&in&realistic&virtual&environments&that&replicate&the&work&place&and&the&workflow.&&& Users&interact&with&video&characters&and&work&through&real<life&scenarios&that&help&them&to&develop& knowledge,&and&understanding&and&apply&skills&in&challenging&situations.&The&opportunities&to&learn& through&failure&in&a&safe&environment&provide&a&powerful&and&enduring&learning&experience.&&The&use& of&gamification&techniques&which&motivate,&engage,&drive&and&reward&the&user&are&proven&to&be&a& highly&effective&way&to&deepen&these&experiences.&&& In&August&we&released&the&latest&NSDA&e<learning&solution&called&“Let’s&talk”&which&provides&an& interactive,&experiential&learning&tool&to&address&the&complex&issue&of&communicating&effectively&with& people&with&dementia&and&is&accompanied&by&a&Let’s&Talk&mobile&application&(available&as&a&free& download&in&via&the&App&Store&in&iTunes)&that&provides&users&with&easy&access&to&selective& reminiscence&prompts.&&&& To&date,&there&are&over&1500&users&of&the&GameScapes&and&over&4000&global&downloads&of&the&iPad& application.&&NSDA&are¤tly&in&discussion&with&a&potential&sponsor&to&fund&the&development&of&a& new&GameScape&aimed&specifically&at&dementia&training&needs&in&the&UK&retail&and&hospitality§ors.&& & &&&&&&& & & &&&&&&&&&&&&The&“Let’s&Talk”&Mobile&Application&& September!–!12/13!Legacy!projects!(including!The!NEAT!Facility)! September&saw&the&opening&of&the&Norfolk&Electronic&Assistive&Technology&(NEAT)&facility&at&UEA&by& Norman&Lamb&MP.&&NSDA&made&a&significant&contribution&towards&the&development&of&the&NEAT&as& part&of&the&portfolio&of&projects&funded&in&12/13.&&Although&the&initial&concept&for&this&innovative& facility&was&around&training&healthcare&students&in&the&use&of&Assistive&Technology,&it&has& subsequently&been&identified&as&a&multiple<use&training&resource&and&NSDA&will&be&developing&it&as&a& pioneering&experiential&learning&and&practical&assessment&resource.&&With&its&realistic&care<setting& appearance&and&comprehensive&video&capture&and&playback&debriefing&capability,&the&NEAT&Centre&is& being&transformed&into&a&Dementia&Care&Simulator&Facility&for&our&Dementia&Care&Coaches’&final& practical&assessments&in&July&14&which&are&conducted&by&a&joint&team&from&UEA&and&UCS.&&&& & With&the&opening&of&the&NEAT,&all&of&our&12&(FY&12/13)&legacy&dementia&projects&have&now&received& their&full&allocation&of&funding&(£450K),&delivered&against&their&key&milestones&and&performance& indicators&and,&crucially,&have&funded&sustainment&plans&in&place&for&FY14/15.&&Many&of&these&NSDA& funded&innovations&have&now&been&adopted&as&core&business&with&others&continuing&to&develop&and& grow&with&the&support&of&individual&Alliance&partners&or®ional&funding&organisations.&&&& &

October!–!Workforce!Transformation!Project!(Dementia!Care!Coaches)! The&NSDA&Dementia&Care&Coach&contribution&to&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&Workforce&Transformation& Programme&represents&the&single&biggest&financial&investment&for&NSDA&for&the&second&half&of& 2013/14&and&the&first&quarter&of&14/15.&&It&is&a&key&dementia&deliverable&for&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk& Workforce&Partnership&and&the&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&County&Councils,&which&are&co<funding&the& groundbreaking&project.&&As&well&as&the&primary&aim&of&addressing&the&competence&gaps&NSDA& identified&in&the&dementia&workforce,&and&thereby&improving&the&quality&of&care&being&provided&to& people&with&dementia&and&their&carers&across&the&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&Dementia&Care&Pathways,&the& programme&is&paving&the&way&for&future&distributed&learning&programmes&and&NSDA&are&working&with& Health&Education&East&of&England&on&potential&spin&out&programmes.&&& & Of&the&275&coaches&that&started&the&course&in&October&2013,&there&are&268&still&on&the&course&from&all& sectors&on&the&Dementia&Care&Pathway,&which&equates&to&a&2.5%&attrition&rate.&&We&had&been&advised& to&expect&at&least&a&10%&drop&out&rate&by&this&point&in&the&course.&&The&course&is&very&popular&with& students&and&considered&to&be&highly&effective&by&their&managers.&&Moreover,&it&is&proving&to&be&a& cost&effective&Distributed&Learning&Programme&that&extends&the&reach&of&the&benefits&of&high&quality& CPD&delivered&learning&to&significantly&more&people.&& & A&Dementia&Care&Coach&supplement&containing&performance&results&is&provided&as&an&attachment.&&&& & November!–!Strategic!Dementia!Advisory!Group!(Regional!Organisations)!! The&Managed&Clinical&network&(MCN)&for&Mental&Health&and&Learning&Disabilities&was&established&in& July&2012&as&a&one<year&pilot&project&as&a&collaboration&between&the&Royal&College&of&Psychiatrists& and&the&East&of&England&Strategic&Health&Authority.&&& As&a&member&of&the&MCN,&the&NSDA&Director&proposed&that&the&group&provide&the&nucleus&for&the& formation&of&a&single&Strategic&Dementia&Advisory&Group&as&the&single&standing&forum&of&Subject& Matter&Experts&for&matters&relating&to&the&care&of&people&with&dementia&in&the&East&of&England.&& Meeting&for&the&first&time&in&November,&the&SDAG&provides&the&first&coherent&advisory&forum&to& inform&the&work&of&disparate®ional&organisations&with&an&interest&in&dementia&such&as:&Strategic& Clinical&Network&of&NHS&England&(SCN),&Eastern&Academic&Health&Science&Network&(EAHSN),&Health& Education&East&of&England&(HEEE)&and&Eastern&Collaboration&and&Leadership&in&Applied&Health& Research&and&Care&(E<CLAHRC).&&&& Although&the&legacy&membership&of&the&MCN&does&provide&multi<professional&input&from&across&the& four&corners&of&the®ion&they&do¬&provide&a&true&representation&of&the&views&of&their&node.&&In& order&to&provide&a&truly&coherent&nodal&input&into&the&SDAG&for®ional&consideration,&NSDA&has& been&working&with&the&AHSN&and&nodal&dementia&leads&to&develop&a&network&of&similar&Dementia& Alliances&across&the®ion.&&This&will&significantly&enhance&the&credibility&of&the&Advisory&Group.&&& & The&SDAG&is¤tly&preparing&its&first&project&proposal&document&for&CCGs&focusing&on&improving& diagnosis&rates&and&the&provision&of&post<diagnostic&support.&&It&is&also&the&forum&for&discussions& around&the&development&of&a&rapid&evaluation&process&to&accelerate&successful&innovation& dissemination&across&CLAHRC,&AHSN,&LETB&and&SCN&to&the&front&line.&December!–!Raising&Dementia&Awareness!through&Dementia!and!the!Arts!
Applied&research&funded&by&NSDA,&involving&UEA&and&Norfolk&care&providers,&has&identified&benefits& in&the&use&of&arts<based&materials&in&providing&dementia&workforce&“experiential&training”;&
recognising&that&they&provide&a&tangible&way&of&taking&people&into&a&different&place&from&which&they& can&have&an&alternative&experience&of&dementia.&&
In&December,&NSDA&hosted&a&visit&by&award&winning&film&writer&and&director&Mat&Whitecross&who& came&to&introduce&an&exclusive&showing&of&his&acclaimed&film&‘Ashes’&based&on&a&character&living&with& dementia,&played&by&film&hard<man&Ray&Winstone.&&Unfortunately,&the&showing&at&Cinema&City& coincided&with&the&evening&that&St&Jude’s&storm&battered&the&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&coasts,&which&took&a& significant&toll&on&attendance&numbers.&&Nevertheless,&the&event&provided&an&opportunity&for&NSDA& Director&and&Mat&to&spend&the&afternoon&talking&about&dementia&related&issues&on&BBC&Radio&Norfolk.&& NSDA&has&also&hosted&a&number&of&highly&acclaimed&experiential&learning&performances&of&“An& Evening&with&Dementia”&starring&Trevor&T&Smith.&&Two&sell<out&performances&were&held&at&City& College&Norwich&with&the&third&at&UEA&and&the&fourth&at&NNUH.&&Suffolk&based&performances&are& taking&place&in&May.&&Feedback&from&the&hundreds&of&health&&&care&workers&that&attended&suggests& that&it&was&an&emotional,&profound&and&universally&beneficial&learning&experience.&& & &
&&&&&Evening'with'Dementia&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&Mat&Whitecross’&Ashes'
January!–!Dementia!Friendly!Communities! Having&initially&launched&our&local&Dementia&Friendly&Communities&initiatives&in&Norfolk&and&Suffolk&in& early&2013,&we&hit&somewhat&of&a&hiatus&as&the&Prime&Minister’s&Challenge&Group&responsible&for& leading&the&national&programme&tried&to&catch&up.&&NSDA&contributed&widely&to&the&consultation&and& development&of&a&nationally&recognised&scheme&for&Dementia&Friendly&Communities&and&just&before& the&end&of&2013&the&framework&and&guidelines&were&eventually&finalized&and&published.&&Following&a& well<attended&consultation&workshop&in&Early&January&14&and&the&development&of&an&appropriate& structure,&objectives&and&action&plan&(attached),&Dementia&Friendly&Norfolk&was&accepted&into&the& national&programme&and&is&being&held&up&nationally&as&an&exemplar&initiative.&&& As&part&of&the&Workforce&Transformation&programme,&NSDA&are&coordinating&activity&between&Age& UK,&Sue&Ryder&and&Alzheimers’&Society&and&other&small&community&providers&to&work&together&in&the& delivery&of&a&network&of&27&Community&Dementia&Learning&Hubs&across&Norfolk&and&Suffolk.&&These& standardized&‘dementia&cafés’&will&provide&essential&learning&opportunities&for&people&with&dementia& and&their&unpaid&carers,&as&well&as&the&‘common&to&all’&provision&of&information,&advice&and&support.& These&hubs&are&designed&to&form&the&core&of&our&emerging&dementia&friendly&communities.&&& Without&any&external&resources&to&speak&of,&progress&is&slow&but&steady&and&the&first&major&event&will& be&at&Carrow&Road&on&16&May,&co<hosted&by&Norman&Lamb&MP.&&&A&Dementia&Friendly&Norfolk&forms&a& major&part&of&the&County’s&Health&&&Wellbeing&Board’s&strategy&and&NSDA&are&considered&as&being& well&suited&to&lead&in&its&continued&development.&&It&is&intended&to&learn&from&experiences&in&Norfolk& and&then&follow&suit&in&Suffolk.&&& &

February!–!Awards!and!Recognition&February&was&an&exciting&month&for&NSDA&as&nominated&finalists&for&awards&in&the&prestigious& Learning&and&Performance&Institute’s&(LPI)&Annual&Learning&Awards&and&the&first&ever&Norfolk&Care& Awards.&&Earlier&in&the&year&NSDA&was&also&successful&in&becoming&one&of&only&8&finalists&(out&of&140&
applicants)&to&reach&the&final&Dragon’s'Den&phase&of&the&NHS&Innovation&Awards&for&Dementia&Care,&
although&ultimately&we&failed&to&win&an&award.&&&
However,&it&was&a&different&story&in&February&and&NSDA&won&the&Gold&award&at&the&LPI&for&the&
groundbreaking&Dementia&Let’s'Talk&GameScape&e<learning&platform&we&developed&with&Toolwire&
and&also&received&a&Highly&Commended&at&the&Norfolk&Care&Awards&in&the&Outstanding&Achievement& category.&&&

& Working&with&our&funding&partners&at&Health&Education&East&of&England,&NSDA&has&had&the&Dementia& Care&Coach&programme&entered&as&the®ional&workforce&supported&application&for&a&dementia& award&in&no&fewer&than&4&national&awards&schemes.&&We&should&know&if&we’ve&been&successfully& shortlisted&by&the&beginning&of&May.&&& March!–!Educational!Toolkit!Regional!Roll!Out! Dementia&Care&is&a&national&priority&for&both&Health&Education&England&(HEE)&and&NHS&England.&& Dementia&care&is&a&key&priority&as&the&enhanced&skills&to&deliver&care&and&the&appropriate&service& configuration&for&people&with&dementia&are&likely&to&result&in&improvements&in&care&for&older&people& in&general.&&&The&HEE&Mandate&for&2013/14&specified&numbers&for&basic&training&in&each&LETB&and&this& target&has&been&met&and&exceeded&in&our&members’&organisations.&&The&refreshed&Mandate&for& 2014/15&is&likely&to&set&new&and&increased&targets&for&dementia&training.& Health&Education&East&of&England&(HEEoE)&via&Norfolk&&&Suffolk&Workforce&Partnership&(N&SWP)&have& invested&Workforce&Transformation&Funds&over&the&past&two&years&in&NSDA&to&develop&a&range&of& products&that&can&improve&education&for&staff&that&care&for&people&with&dementia.&&In&March,&a&joint& NSDA/N&SWP&paper&was&presented&to&the&HEEoE&Executive&Team&that&described&the&options&and& required&actions&for&roll&out&across&the®ion,&and&on<going&development&(in&NSDA)&of&this&important& work.&&& The&N&SWP&no&longer&has&a&dedicated&dementia&lead&within&the&organisation&so&we&have¬&yet& received&any&formal&feedback&from&this&paper;&however,&from&discussions&with&staff&in&other®ional& workforce&partnerships&is&it&clear&that&there&is&an&appetite&for&other&areas&to&make&use&of&our& innovative&workforce&development&products&and&adopt&them&for&use&across&their&providers.&& Conclusion! iden/fied%in%the%demen/a%workforce,%and%thereby%improving%the%quality%of%care%being%provided%to%people%
with%demen/a%and%their%carers%across%the%Norfolk%and%Suffolk%Demen/a%Care%Pathways,%this%innova/ve,%
experien/al%learning%programme%will%be%thoroughly%evaluated%to%assess%its%success%at%delivering%Training%

From%the%outset,%this%programme%has%been%developed%through%widespread%consulta/on%with%commissioners,%
academics%and%frontQline%care%providers%(in%the%same%forum)%to%ensure%it%meets%as%many%of%their%collec/ve%
needs%and%expecta/ons%as%possible.%%In%response,%the%programme%we%are%delivering%employs%a%hierarchical,%
cascade%model%to%enable%and%support%care%providers%from%all%se]ngs%to%
develop!their!competence!and!

.%%To%achieve%this,%we%are%developing%a%pioneering%mul/%disciplinary%cohort%
of%Demen/a%Care%Coaches%from%across%the%Demen/a%Care%Pathway%to%act%as%specialist%demen/a%care%
coaches,%mentors%and%role%models%in%their%place%of%work%and%in%the%wider%community.%%Through%this%network,%
we%aimed%to%influence%and%improve%15%specific%competence%areas%in%at%least%3700%frontQline%care%workers%as%
well%as%helping%to%raise%demen/a%awareness%right%across%the%region%through%the%DCCs’%complementary%role%as%
Demen/a%Friend%Champions.%%%

In%2012,%the%Demen/a%Alliance%formed%the%Demen/a%Training%and%Educa/on%Community%(DemTEC)%by%
bringing%those%involved%in%developing%and%delivering%demen/a%learning%across%the%region%together%to%work%in%
collabora/on.%%To%develop%our%cohort%of%Demen/a%Care%Coaches,%the%Alliance’s%DemTEC%partners%worked%
together%to%design%and%deliver%a%coordinated%package%of%experien/al%learning%tools.%%
%
Care%Coach%development%has%been%delivered%as%a%concentrated%5%day%induc/on%package%of%demen/a%and%
coaching%related%competencies%spread%over%2%weeks%(which%started%in%October%13)%followed%by%one%day%a%
month%for%specific%competence%development%and%panQpathway%group%work%(ending%in%July%14).%%A%County%
Coordinator%plans%and%oversee%the%delivery%of%the%project%across%their%respec/ve%geographical%area%as%well%as%
fulfilling%the%admin%support%role.%%A%contribu/on%towards%backfill%has%been%agreed%for%those%in%the%
independent%social%care%sector;%however,%there%are%no%backfill%contribu/ons%authorized%for%NHS%employees.%%
Each%of%the%County%CoQordinators%works%with%a%County%Steering%Group%hosted%by%their%respec/ve%County%

The%Demen/a%Care%Coaches%are%enabled%to%carry%out%their%role%by%means%a%new%and%bespoke%Demen/a%
Alliance%IT%solu/on%called%“The%Coaching%Centre”.%%Building%on%“The%Learning%Loca/on”,%this%website%and%
unique%iPadQbased%applica/on%provides%students%with%ready%access%to%all%of%the%learning%resources%they%
require.%It%also%underpins%the%Care%Coach%Community%of%Prac/ce%and%provides%the%mechanism%for%
recording%all%coaching%interven/ons%and%evalua/ons%from%coaches%and%their%managers.%%This%enables%us%
to%very%easily%collate%and%analyse%a%huge%variety%of%quan/ta/ve%and%qualita/ve%data%from%the%care%frontQ

In%addi/on%to%the%Care%Coaches,%we%will%are%working%with%care%providers%and%a%third%sector%partnership%to%
establish%a%network%of%Demen/a%Community%Learning%Hubs%Q%learning%from%the%six%different%Demen/a%
Hub%pilot%sites%the%Alliance%funded%last%year.%%Responding%to%evidence%from%the%SHIELD%programme%(Peer%
Learning%for%Carers%of%People%with%Demen/a)%the%Alliance%funded%in%2011,%these%Demen/a%Alliance%
branded%hubs%are%providing%the%opportunity%for%carers%to%learn%from%each%other%as%well%as%from%the%Hub’s%
resident%Demen/a%Care%Coaches.%%These%Demen/a%Hubs%will%also%play%an%important%role%in%the%
development%of%our%drive%to%make%Norfolk%and%Suffolk%and%more%Demen/a%Friendly%Communi/es.%%%

Because%we%are%assessing%training%transfer%into%prac/ce%we%will%be%measuring%performance%through%
