Top U.S. research firms have reported that the American public’s confidence in government, corporations, and NGOs are at an all time low when it comes to
leadership, ethics, and trust. It has not been this low since the 1920s, when gangsters ruled the business world.
This ethical dilemma has produced a Crisis in Leadership.
From 2013 to 2015, thirty-three thousand people in twenty-seven markets around the world were surveyed through the Edelman Trust Barometer. They were asked about their trust in institutions, and their perceptions impacting business and government. The survey reported and identified 5 global consistencies:
Our team is inspired by this and is challenged to believe that there is hope.
It is therefore our passion to help address all 5 of these points by organizing a global conversation comprised of a group of military, academic, and business leaders, who will serve as “early responders” to this leadership crisis.
There is a Crisis of leadership. Business is to lead the debate for change. The most trusted sources are Academic experts. One of the top 4 key factors to shape trust is leadership & CEO. The suggestion is to evolve toward Values.

1 2 3 4 5 6The next generation has voiced their desire to work in business where they can identify with the values. 94% of employees say it is critical that the company they work for is ethical and report they prefer to be paid less but work for a company with ethical business practices than offered higher pay from a company with
questionable practices.
The LRN Ethics Study continues to support the demand stating “if you get people to share in ethics, values, beliefs and trust, they do the right thing because in doing so they are honoring themselves.”
Shared values could help in the national crisis around corporate cultures, as recognized by the Ethics Resource Center in the National Business Ethics Survey, 2013. During the 2014 BB&T Center for Ethical Business Leadership Symposium, a discussion amongst the experts spoke about honor and other values replacing terminology such as “ethics” in business. The context of honor came from the United States Military, as well as leadership and ethics lessons that could be implemented in business for positive and long-term change.
The Harvard Business Review, starting in 2010, created a spotlight around
Leadership Lessons from the Military. Numerous academics are beginning to focus around this correlation and what business could implement in close relationship with the Military. One prominent team, Dr. Benmelech and Dr. Frydman of
Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management researched the mounting evidence of personal characteristics of leadership on business outcomes, creating sections particularly around values and leadership in their paper Military CEOs from 2013. The Mike Cottrell College of Business within the University of North Georgia (UNG) is uniquely qualified to set the stage for this global issue as a Leadership Institute as well as one of the six Senior Military Colleges in the United States that directly commissions officers to the Unites States Armed Forces. The learning environment at UNG in the College of Business, with both students and cadets, serves as a catalyst for the discussion of how military values could influence business leadership education long-term and fosters an environment naturally which promotes
academics, business, leadership and military experts working together to solve such global issues.

FedEx is an enduring business, spanning 4 decades, and employing 300,000+ people all over the world. Very few individuals this century have created a company they dreamed up in college that grows to literally define an industry. Fred Smith founded his company upon core values he learned from serving in the U.S. marines. FedEx lives those values to this day. It is for this reason that we are selecting FedEx as the recipient of the first annual Honor2Lead Award.
