4.5. DEVELOPMENT OF CREATIVE TEACHING TOOLS Experimental Guestroom (X-Room)

http://www.experimentalguestroom.com/

Dr. Cobanoglu was the founder and manager of experimental guestroom (X-Room) at the University of Delaware’s teaching hotel, Courtyard by Marriott between 2007 and 2010. Dr. Cobanoglu created X-Room in the summer of 2007, after his promotion to Associate Professor. X-Room is a testing room for new technologies and systems. All of the

technologies tested in X-Room have been donated by vendors (the value of these systems are more than $100,000). This room was integrated into Dr. Cobanoglu’s teaching. In this room, students learned about hospitality technology hands-on. In addition, a group of students, X-Room Scholars, worked with Dr. Cobanoglu to improve the technologies tested in X-Room and collected data from guests who stay in X-Room. This data was used for research purposes. X-Room also integrated faculty and students in other majors. For example, students in Graphical Design were involved in designing the logo of X-Room. In addition as a teaching and research tool, X-Room generated publicity worth more than 1 million dollars in major leading TV channels, newspapers, and magazines including BBC, NBC, ABC, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Futurist

(8)

Magazine. Dr. Cobanoglu has been invited around the world as a speaker to share his experience in developing X-Room as a teaching tool.

International Cruise Management Course with Partnership with Carnival Cruise Lines

Dr. Cobanoglu developed an international cruise management class at the University of Delaware and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. He has been teaching this class for more than 10 years in Bahamas/Caribbean, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. This class has a unique approach in which the class is offered as a blended method where the theory part of the class is held online (via Blackboard or Canvas) and the face-to-face component is done during an actual cruise. Carnival Cruise Lines and Costa Cruise Lines were chosen as a partner. The students are taken to an actual cruise where they are involved with variety of activities. The class includes hands on activities where the students are required to do research on the impact of cruise industry on guests, staff members and local economies and destinations.
