SAI Global - The GFSI expertise you need
for your Food Safety Certification Program
GFSI FOOD SAFETY PROGRAMS
Today’s consumers and retailers are acutely aware of potential health hazards in their food, and governments all over the world continue to respond with new laws and regulations mandating higher standards for every stage of the farm-to-table journey.
While this is good news for consumers, it presents considerable confusion and complication for those in the food business who must somehow navigate the differing paths to compliance in the locales they serve. Following best practices for preparing and storing food is a good first step. However, for operations of regional, national, global scale, or with global aspirations, developing and adopting a GFSI benchmarked Food Safety Certification Program is critical to establishing and maintaining access to global food markets while adequately managing the risks and liabilities inherent with the food and beverage business.
Our highly skilled audit teams know not only how to evaluate your business processes against GFSI food safety standards, but also how regulation adherence, best practices, and your unique brand standards can work together to achieve GFSI compliance and reduce risk while improving the efficiency, economy, quality and profitability of your operations.

The two biggest reasons
to become certified to
a GFSI benchmarked
standard:
Market Opportunities
A fully GFSI-compliant operation and supply chain opens up global market opportunities as many retailers require it.
Cost savings
GFSI certification eliminates the cost burden of undergoing multiple individual audits, and more retailers every day are accepting certified GFSI-benchmarked standards as sufficient proof of a food safety system.
GFSI FOOD SAFETY PROGRAMS
SAI Global offers a
full suite of training,
auditing and certification
services for these GFSI
benchmarked standards:
SQF
One of the world’s leading food safety and quality management systems, SQF is designed to meet the needs of retailers and suppliers worldwide. It provides independent certification that a supplier’s food safety and quality management system complies with international and domestic food safety regulations. SQF comes in three levels. Level two and level three certifications are GFSI benchmarked.
BRC
BRC is the world’s first GFSI-recognized standard and continues to be one of the best choices for retailers worldwide looking for a high level of food safety assurance from food suppliers. BRC has been extensively revised in consultation with senior representatives from major retailers and food service companies, ensuring that it continues to meet the requirements of manufacturers and retailers.
FSSC 22000
FSSC 22000 is a food safety certification scheme designed for use by a wide range of organizations. From food processors and manufacturers to food packaging material manufacturing, the scheme incorporates HACCP principles, implementation plans and prerequisite programs, and creates an effective framework for food safety management, total supply chain management, and control of food safety hazards. The scheme is based on the integration of ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Systems scheme, ISO/TS 22002-1 and (PAS) 223 FSSC 22000 requirements.
Global Aquaculture Alliance BAP Standards
The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards address environmental and social responsibility, animal welfare, food safety and traceability in a voluntary certification program for aquaculture facilities. The BAP program outlines standards for each type of facility, from hatchery and feed mill to farm and processing plant. The recent addition of new multi-species farm standards for finfish and crustacean production opens up the program to a number of new species that include but are not limited to seabass, sea bream, cobia, seriola, trout, grouper, barramundi, perch, carp, flounder, turbot, striped bass, crabs, freshwater prawns and crawfish.
GLOBALG.A.P.
This standard was introduced by FoodPLUS GmbH, derivative of GLOBALG.A.P., to raise standards in the production of fresh fruit and vegetables. Certification ensures a level playing field in terms of food safety and quality and proves that growers are prepared to constantly improve systems to raise standards. The standard is primarily designed to reassure consumers about how food is produced on the farm by minimizing detrimental environmental impacts of farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health and safety as well as animal welfare. GLOBALG.A.P. is a pre-farm-gate standard, which means that the certificate covers the process of the certified product from farm inputs like feed or seedlings and all the farming activities until the product leaves the farm.
Whether you are in food
production, storage,
packaging or preparation, a
comprehensive food safety
program is critical to the
success of your business
SAI Global helps you create a consistent food safety program, incorporating all of the latest government mandated regulations, customer programs, and voluntary and industry schemes.
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
While food safety programs are the hallmark of modern food manufacturers, high quality is the essential ingredient to ensure success with the consumer. Reliable food manufacturing systems with a disciplined and knowledgeable work force that fully understand both food safety and consistent quality are necessary to compete in today’s market.
HACCP
A HACCP program helps assure regulating authorities and customers that you are taking every reasonable precaution to ensure food safety. It also helps you reduce contamination-related food losses and improve the design of new food products.
This program can be implemented for control of physical, biological, and chemical risks throughout your operations. The plan helps assure regulating authorities and customers that you are taking every reasonable precaution to ensure food safety. It also helps you reduce contamination-related food losses and improve the design of new food products.
Animal Welfare Audits
Ensuring the health and humane treatment of animals you process has never been more important than it is today. Healthy, well-cared for animals result in a better quality product, meet critical vendor and supplier agreement standards, and demonstrate sensitivity to savvy consumers. Our PAACO-certified professional auditing team has years of expertise in performing Animal Welfare audits, providing you with the objectivity and discretion needed when assessing this delicate topic.
Animal welfare is a sensitive topic for consumers, and they're using their dollars to drive purchasing decisions made by restaurants, food service operations, and grocery stores. With SAI Global's Animal Welfare audits, you can verify that your quality standards for the health and humane treatment of animals meet industry and consumer expectations.
GMA-SAFE
GMA-SAFE Assessments describe the performance of a facility’s key Quality Systems, measuring them against internal policies and procedures, and the GMA-SAFE checklist. GMA-SAFE Assessment categories include: Management Responsibility, Fundamentals (Prerequisites, GMPs), Food Safety and HACCP Systems, Manufacturing Quality Systems, and Regulatory Consideration.
Retailer Addenda
SAI Global undertakes audits of manufacturers and service providers that supply to major franchise outlets/brands as well as leading retailer’s own branded products.
The standards used for inspection are proprietary, but based on current industry standards incorporating any specific quality, food safety and regulatory requirements specified by the retailer/brand owner.
These audits provide an independent assessment to the brand owner's requirements and contribute to the due diligence process. These audits are typically required by the brand owner for a company to trade / supply their goods in the outlet.
Special Claims Audits
• Antibiotic Free • Gluten Free
Storage & Distribution
• BRC Storage & Distribution • Good Distribution Practices (GDP) • GMA-SAFE (Warehouse/Distribution)
Food packaging standards are in a heightened state of change around the globe. Clients and regulators are demanding higher levels of quality, more sustainable materials and practices as well as formal environmental and risk assessments. And that’s just for starters. Whether you are a food or beverage company, packaging house, retailer or packaging materials producer, SAI Global offers the specialized expertise you need to audit, certify and train your
organization to the packaging, quality and risk-management standards needed to achieve your business goals.
We are deeply committed to helping our clients understand their certification options and guiding them through the certification process every step of the way. Our goal is to match you with the schemes that offer you the most benefit in the context of your business goals.
PACKAGING STANDARDS:
IFS PACsecure
Enables packaging manufacturers to certify that primary and secondary materials used in the packaging process are safe for the food industry. This standard covers flexible and rigid plastics, paper, metal and glass and is GFSI benchmarked.
BRC/IOP Packaging
Helps packaging manufacturers and converters adopt good manufacturing practices and quality management systems. This standard recognizes two levels of hygiene risk—one for food packaging (GFSI benchmarked) and another for non-food packaging.

PACKAGING
STANDARDS THAT INCLUDE A PACKAGING COMPONENT/SCOPE:
SQF
Applicable to all stages of the food packaging supply chain, this standard provides a comprehensive solution for oversight of supply chain food packaging safety and quality assurance. SQF is widely recognized in the United States and across the Americas and is GFSI benchmarked.
FSSC 22000
Developed to meet the needs of a global supply chain, FSSC 22000 delivers a GFSI-benchmarked certification scheme that incorporates ISO standards and prequisite programs for the certification of food safety management systems in the manufacture and provision of food packaging.
GMA-SAFE
This program provides a comprehensive, non-scored narrative of a facility’s activities regarding food protection, quality assurance and food defense. It covers six industry-specific assessments for food protection, primary packaging, aseptic, warehouse/distribution, spice and dairy, and a shorter but thorough SAFE Express Assessment.
OTHER STANDARDS THAT ARE APPLICABLE TO PACKAGING:
CoC - Chain of Custody (Pulp & Paper)
FSC
•
SFI
•
PEFC
As the consumers continue to drive demand for packaging made from certified forest products, Chain of Custody standards verify that forest products originating from a Defined Forest Area (DFA) are tracked and verified through all phases of ownership, transportation and transformation.
