Types of Interpreting
There are fundamental differences between liaison, escort and conference interpreting:
A. Liaison interpreters are required in meetings, negotiations and court proceedings.
B. Escort interpreters are used if, for example, you want to take care of guests from abroad, pick up business partners from the airport or carry out a site visit.
C. Conference interpreters are generally employed at congresses,
conventions and conferences.
If unusual language combinations (e.g. Swedish – Croatian) are required or an interpreter is faced with a conference where there are too many different language combinations to make direct
interpreting possible, relay interpreting (interpreting via a second language, such as English) is used.
The sworn and publicly appointed KERN liaison interpreters interpret into two or more working languages during:
Interpreting in court and for authorities
n court proceedings
n discussions in the run up to court proceedings and
witness statements
n police negotiations
n interviews, hearings, judicial and extrajudicial settlements.
Telephone interpreting
KERN interpreters can also offer their services during discussions over modern internet telephone services, as well as telephone services and telephone systems. This places the highest demands on the interpreter, who has to interpret the conversation with sensitivity, as well as cultural awareness.
Interpreting methods
Consecutive interpreting
During simultaneous interpreting the interpreter sits in a sound proof unit and receives the spoken text through headphones. He interprets the spoken word concurrently and continuously, i.e. simultaneously, into the target language using simultaneous interpreting equipment. This requires a good interpreting technique, as well as a high level of concentration. Because of the huge demands placed on them, simultaneous interpreters work in pairs (at least), and switch every 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to prepare simultaneous interpreters thoroughly in order to ensure a good interpretation.
Another form of simultaneous interpreting is whispered interpreting. The interpreter sits near or behind his listener and whispers what is said into his ear in the target language.
KERN interpreters are profi cient in many different techniques which are used depending on the type of event and the requirements.
During consecutive interpreting the interpretation follows consecutively, that is to say, subsequently. During the speech, the interpreter jots down the ideas and salient points that the speaker has made using a personal short hand. As soon as the speaker
has fi nished or pauses, the interpreter relays the speech in the target language. Using this technique the speech is held twice, which means that it is important to note that a meeting or discussion can last signifi cantly longer if a consecutive interpreter is used.
Project preparation
The order should be placed no later than 14 days before the event so that we can guarantee the highest levels of organisational, technical and content-related preparation.
So that KERN can support you in planning your event, your KERN project manager needs a detailed description of the assignment. As a general rule, a discussion with the conference or meeting organiser is also recommended.
n Date of the event n
Topic of the event
n Estimated duration and structure of the event(s)
(timings, breaks, conferences running parallel)
n Details of the event location and room set-up n
Planned conference languages
n Number of participants n
Type of interpretation required
n Required interpreting equipment(which KERN is, of course, happy to provide)
So that a suitable interpreter can prepare himself for your project as well as possible, KERN needs the relevant orientation material for the topic to be interpreted, such as:
n Documents or handouts from the event
n
Text or slides for lectures, addresses and speeches
n Summary of specialised terminology which may potentially arise n
Translations, glossaries, parallel texts for fi ne tuning vocabulary
n Diagrams, images, organisation charts etc.n
Other materials, which you feel may help our
interpreters to prepare.
The interpreter’s role is clearly defined: s/he translates the content of the speaker’s presentation or speech into the target language(s) which are understood by the audience without incorporating any personal opinion.
An interpreter is an intermediary between cultures.
Alongside specific linguistic features, humour and culture, the things that are not explicitly said, but nevertheless expressed, are also of importance. References to historical, cultural or political and economic occurrences which arouse certain images or emotions among the audience of a particular culture need to be similarly carried over to listeners of another culture.
Besides the standard language, the interpreter also masters the colloquial language, dialects and accents. S/he recognises proverbs, sayings and quotes and is able to express these in his/ her mother tongue.
In order to guarantee a consistently high quality interpretation, the following should be taken into account:

Please bear in mind that interpreters need time to process
the ongoing information in order to then interpret them into another language coherently and professionally.
n Please schedule pauses in longer meetings. Interpreting is
Interpreting and event equipment
KERN provides technical equipment for international conferences, meetings, presentations, addresses, receptions, guided company tours and trade shows. Technicians present during the entire event, are responsible for transportation, setup and dismantling as well as service and maintenance of the equipment.
KERN hires out and installs the technology necessary for a conference or interpretation:
The prices for interpreting systems depend on the individual technical requirements of the respective event (e.g. location, number of booths and receivers required, etc.)

n Sound systems (amplifi ers, speakers, tape-recorders, etc.) n
Video systems (video recorders, video cameras, video screens, etc.)
n Projection systems (overhead projectors, screens, etc.) nFurther audiovisual equipment
Rights
If the interpreting services are to be used on a sound carrier, on the internet (streaming video, podcasts, etc.), on television or for broadcasting, the exploitation rights need to be transferred before the interpreting event.
In order to receive the rights to the spoken word, i.e. the interpreting service, a separate agreement and fee-based service is necessary in advance. Only then is it possible to record the interpretation and to re-use it in various forms.
KERN is happy to advise you on your requirements and takes care of transferring the exploitation rights for your interpreting project.
Dubbing – Subtitling – Synchronisation
Foreign-language dubbing
During foreign-language subtitling it is important to consider that the text refl ects what is said in such a way that the content can be completely understood. At the same time, the viewer needs to be able to follow the fi lm chronologically. In subtitling, it is essential to bear cultural issues in mind in the wording.
KERN offers foreign-language dubbing for industrial and advertising fi lms, videos, CDs and audiotapes by native speakers.
The foreign-language translation of the original text is adapted in advance for the fi lm or audio material. This guarantees
you material that is comparable to that which is produced in the target language.
Generally, KERN voice actors have voice training in order to express the fi lm, sound, presentation, speech etc. in the target language in the best possible way.
Foreign-language dubbing
With modern production methods and the latest digital recording processes, KERN achieves sound spectra which are especially suited for advertising and company films.
Foreign-language voice actors
KERN offers a professional transcription service for compiling a written version of German or foreign-language audio or video material. Here, the options range from interviews for fi lm and television productions to series of lectures.
After the transcription, a translation of the text is also possible.
Specialist translations
Specialist translations require specialist translators. The range of texts translated by KERN covers technical (e.g. user manuals, data sheets and training documents), corporate communication (e.g. press releases, annual reports and image brochures) and legal texts (e.g. contracts, legal writs and extracts from the commercial register). KERN’s professional translators have the necessary language profi ciency and professional expertise, the exact knowledge of modern language usage as well as the stylistic sensitivity in order to phrase their texts for the intended purpose. They always translate from a working language into their native language in their respective specialist fi eld.
KERN works with sworn professional translators. KERN’s worldwide network of offi ces guarantees that documents which are destined for public authorities and institutions outside of Germany are certifi ed legally effective and, if necessary, apostilled in order to correspond to the respective laws of the target countries. KERN offers express translations as a 24/7-service
domestically and internationally. Layout and adaptation
KERN designs advertising and publication texts, slogans and user manuals according to your requirements. The texts are translated according to the respective nationality and are adapted for the target group.
