Last week we learnt about the prefix ‘Un’
What does the prefix un- mean? It means ‘not’. unhappy unkind uncover Not happy. Not kind.
To take a cover off so it is not covered.
Today we will continue to look at
prefixes.
This week we will look at the prefixes – ‘mis’ and ‘dis’.
What is a prefix?
What is a root word?
What is a Prefix?
A prefix is added to the beginning of a word to make a new word.
Most prefixes are added to the
beginning of root
words without any
changes in spelling.

dis- connect disconnect
mis- take mistake
un- cover uncover
Prefix – ‘dis’
It is important to understand the definitions of
prefixes because they help us figure out the
meanings of any new words we come across. Think about the different words which can be
created through adding the prefix dis-, like
disconnect.
Prefix – ‘dis’
What does the prefix dis- mean?
It means ‘not’ or ‘the opposite of’.

Do not like something.
Break a connection so it is not connected any more.
Add the prefix ‘dis’ to these words to make new ones…

Recount Texts
What is a recount? What are the
features of a recount? Discuss

Can you remember what a time conjunction is?
Comparing texts
Look at both of these texts. Read through them, what are the
similarities? What do you notice? Are there any differences?

Some of the differences include: - The structure - Dear diary
- The diary entry is written in first person whereas the first recount text is not.
- The recount text about floods in Pakistan is a lot more factual in comparison to the diary entry.

Use a dictionary and the internet to help you find the
definition of your unfamiliar words.

These are questions that ask you to find factual information within a text.
