Part I: The Hunger Games
AHS seniors Allison and Yasmin are standing near their lockers, looking at Instagram.
Matt: What’s up?
Allison: Here take a look at this.
(She hands Tyler her phone)
Yasmin: I wonder what filter she’s using; she always looks so perfect.
Matt: Isn’t she on some Disney show? Shake It Up or something? What’s her name?? Rocky Road, Rocky Red….? Allison: Her character’s name isRocky Blue. She’s not an ice cream flavor Why are you always hungry? Tyler: Hey, let me see. (He grabs for Allison’s phone) Isn’t that Zendaya? the K.C. Undercover girl?
Matt: Dude, how did you know that? Please tell me your girlfriend told you. Allison: Well, of course I did. I follow her on instagram, and she’s pretty funny.
Tyler: Plus, she’s really pretty. (His girlfriend, Allison gives him the evil eye) Ummmm…I mean she looks really healthy. Allison: Yes she does. I wonder how she does it? Do you think she’s on a diet? A juice fast or 30 Day Challenge, or something?
Yasmin: Well I don’t know about that but it looks like she eats “healthy.” Maybe not a specific diet, but just eating foods that have the proper things your body needs. Hey! I do remember a little from health class!
Matt: I don’t care what she eats or doesn’t eat, I’m starving! I overslept and had to skip breakfast. My mom told me about something called the “Paleo-diet”. Let’s go get a Big Mac and see if that diet is any good. Anything beats the cafeteria’s mystery meat.
Tyler: I’ll pass. I ate a huge breakfast…eggs, bacon…lots of bacon, and an avocado my mom forced on me. I’ve got some water in my back pack for later.
Matt: OK. Well, I guess I’ll see you at wrestling practice then. Let’s go girls.
Allison: Actually, I have to study for my econ test can you pick me up a salad and some fruit? That will hold me over for cross country.
Yasmin: Ok, I’m going with Matt to eat some carbs and fat like normal people. I’ll text you after gymnastics practice. Use a separate sheet of paper to answer the following
Here’s a list of what the boys had eaten so far:
For breakfast—Scrambled eggs, a milk, avocado, toast, butter, and bacon. For lunch—Big Mac Meal: Sandwich, large Coke, plus large fries and ketchup.
1. Underline all foods containing carbohydrates. (make sure to list all the toppings on the Big Mac) 2. Circle all the foods containing protein.
3. Put a box around all the foods containing lipids.
4. Create a chart for carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and list the foods in the appropriate column. 5. Which lipids are considered saturated and which are unsaturated?
6. What metabolic plant process makes carbohydrates? Write the chemical formula.
Part II The boys are at wrestling practice and have just weighed in…Tyler weighs in at 185 lbs. Matt: “Man, you’ve dropped 10 pounds since last week. How did you lose all that weight so fast?”
Tyler: “A couple weeks ago I was watching MTV and saw this dude named Cory that dropped like 20 lbs in a week.” Matt: In a week? That sounds dangerous. Are you still following the weight management plan that Coach gave you? Tyler: No dude, but don’t tell anyone, especially not Coach. He’ll go nuts. You remember I missed weight last year at
State and had to forfeit? Coach is still on me about that.
Matt: Be careful man. It is not good to drop that much weight so fast that’s why Coach put us on the weight management plan in the first place…you can only drop 1.5% of your body weight per week…at the most!
Tyler: Anyway, dude, Cory got a little sick, but he learned to manage it. I’ve been doing what he did. Matt: Like what?
Tyler: He ate PowerBars and drank lots of water. He never ate bread, pizza, or pasta. He also worked out a lot. But instead of lots of water, I try to drink at least 6 whey shakes a day.
Matt: I don’t know man….doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. He must have eaten a ton of PowerBars then. Coach is always telling us about the latest “research”. Remember that Harvard Medical School study he talked about last week? You’re supposed to get a certain amount of protein for each kilogram of your body weight. Are you doing the math and making sure you’re getting enough protein and carbs?
Tyler:(Tyler rolls his eyes.) It’s only a couple more weeks till State. I should be down to my final weight class by then. Once I get myself down, I’ll go back to eating like normal. No more cutting carbs.
Matt: Yeah, but eating nothing but PowerBar®’s and drinking whey shakes can’t be good. Even cafeteria food has to be better for you than that!
Tyler: Whatever, I’ll eat a real meal tonight at home. I think my dad is grilling salmon and my mom keeps cooking spinach and broccoli for some reason.
Matt: Everyone’s gonna know there’s something wrong when they get near you. Your breath smells rank dude! Tyler: Yeah Allison’s not too happy about that either, I’ve been chewing lots of sugar free gum, but it doesn’t help. Matt: Speaking of Allison, how is she? Yasmine said she got dizzy and almost passed out during cross country. She’s not doing this crazy “diet” you’re doing is she?
Coach: TYLER! MATT! Time for drills! How are we going to win State if you two aren’t practicing!?
1. Look at the breakdown of carbs on the PowerBar label. How many grams make up the following:
o Simple sugars __________
o Fiber __________
o Other carbs __________
2. What do you think “other carbs” are? (hint: look at the ingredients list)
3. What percentage is listed as protein? According to the Harvard study, how many PowerBars would Tyler need to eat in one day to meet the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for his current weight?
4. List at least 3 structural, anatomical, physiological, cellular, or biochemical uses of carbohydrates in the human body?
5. List at least 3 structural, anatomical, physiological, cellular, or biochemical uses of proteins in the human body? 6. List at least 3 structural, anatomical, physiological, cellular, or biochemical uses of lipids in the human body? 7. What macromolecule (monomer) do your cells initially use for energy? __________________________ 8. If the macromolecule your cells normally use for energy isn’t available, then what other macromolecule will you
Part III
Coach: OK boys, time to weigh-in. Tyler you’re up first. Tyler, two weeks ago, 185. Today, 160. Matt: Dang Ty, you’ve lost a lot of weight!
Tyler: Yeah I told you I was determined to make weight…What’s that face for? Matt: Man, your breath still reeks.
Tyler: Whatever dude. Allison made me switch to tic tac’s to cover it up. Gum wasn’t working anymore. My mom’s taking me to the dentist tomorrow and to the doctor Friday.
(Tyler slams his gym locker)
Matt: Hangry much??!!
Tyler: Maybe, mainly I just feel like crap. My stomach hurts, my head is killing me, and you already know about the breath thing.
Matt: Maybe you need to eat pizza and burgers like a normal person now that you’ve lost the weight.
Tyler: Yeah maybe, but not right now State Trials are next week. So I need to keep this up a little while longer.
Matt: Speaking of week, you look weak. Are you going to be able to practice today? Yesterday you weren’t 100% and that’s not making either one of us any better. Did you ever figure out if you’re getting all the protein and carbs you need to keep working out?
Tyler: I’ll be fine. I’m going to drink a whey shake after practice. That’ll hold me over ‘til I get home and eat dinner. Matt: Ok, but what about now? You should come have lunch with me, Yasmine, and Allison. It’s chicken nugget day!! Tyler: Nope, I’ve made it this far; I’ll make it a little longer.
Matt: Whatever dude. I need to eat or else I won’t make it through practice this afternoon. Questions:
1. What percentage of his body weight has Tyler lost in 2 weeks? Is it more or less than the “weight management” plan Coach gave him?
2. Other than the rapid weight loss, what are some of Tyler’s negative symptoms? Evaluate Tyler’s diet; what could be causing his negative symptoms?
3. Evaluate the nutritional information of the 4 “meals” on the handout. Make a chart or diagram comparing the amount of: calories, total fat (saturated, unsaturated, trans fat), cholesterol, fiber, protein, sugar, and sodium. Determine which meal comes closest to meeting the RDA requirements for teenagers.
4. Each person in the group: Investigate the pro’s and con’s of 1 of the following diets and share out your results. a. Detox or juice fasts
b. Keto Diet c. Paleo diet d. Mediterranean e. The South Beach Diet f. 30 Day Challenge
